The Chefs place western is a small gem of a western store serving really affordable Western food in southern Singapore. It’s a store I recently chanced upon during my visit to the new SAFRA Mount Faber clubhouse since their recent major renovation. Let’s check-in what’s on offer with a dine-in.
Chef place western serves what you expect of a typical Western food fair. Your food orders are grilled on order. On first impressions, there is also quite a menu selection you can expect from such a conventional establishment with a Western flair. Notably, there is your usually selection of chicken, pork chops, seafood and steaks from frozen.
Moreover, the store is a tenant in the Food Paradise food court located at SAFRA Mount Faber clubhouse. The establishment is open the public. Also, the store is run by a Chinese duo who diligently churns out dish by dish of great tasting food, even on peak lunch periods where long queues are the norm. A buzzer be given to you upon order with waits ranging in the 10-15 min range.
Try their burgers and rice bowls
Chefs place western dishes I would recommend would be their rice bowls. Especially if you want a filling meal. Here, you get a rice bowl with a side of your main options, such as chicken or pork. A recommendation will be their chicken chop with rice at $6.00 under their specialty pasta and rice.
Here, your rice dish is generously topped with a side of green broccoli and a sunny side egg. It is quite a filling affair. The chicken cutlet are your typical chicken breast pieces and are juicy and well marinated. Additionally, for 50 cents extra, you can upgrade your white rice servings to fried rice, but forgo the vegetable side to make up the difference. The vegetable sides are fresh, green and crunchy. Especially the broccoli which comes with your rice bowls as a standard side.
Their beef burger also has surprise cheese infused into the burger patty too. It adds a nice touch.
Value for money burgers
An additional recommendation be their hamburgers. You have three types to choose from (Beef, Pork and Har Cheong Kai Chicken). You can’t go wrong with either. The patties are nicely grilled and even can compete with gourmet burger joints easily selling the same thing at twice the price.
Moreover, their burger patties are thick and juicy, and comes assembled sitting between two toasted burger buns and topped with a fried sunny side-up egg. Also, their burger buns are crispy and are individually toasted on both sides. Their beef burger also has surprise cheese infused into the burger patty too. It adds a nice touch.
However, the hamburger patties can be dry at times and are not as flavourful as I expected it to be, like those offered by other gourmet burger establishments such as Wok burger or Wolf burgers. However, taking in the entire package itself, what you get is incredibly good value.
What makes it even more amazing is that you get all of these, plus sides for $7.90 ($7.50 total after SAFRA membership discount). It is literally a steal. Come to think about it, $7.50 is the price you pay just for sides in some restaurants. It can even rival some burger places selling easily selling the same thing at $20 a pop.
Grill and steak options
Additionally, if you require something more conventionally “western food”. There is grilled chicken, fish, steaks. These can be paired with side or pasta choices. You can’t go wrong with their grilled chicken options with 10 different styles of sauces and cooking styles on-menu.
Additionally, you can opt for their crispy chicken cutlet. It is the only fried variant of their chicken dishes on offer. You can have it doused in thick salted egg yolk sauce which is sure to bring a delight to anyone.
Prime Sirloins on the cheap
Also, their steaks not actually not bad. Their Prime Sirloins, despite being cooked from frozen as sizable in portions and are actually pretty juicy, especially when you have them medium-rare. It was a surprise for the quality offered at the price ($11), it is also served with generous servings of brown sauce.
Notably, this is somewhat reminiscent to what Astons grill has on offer too when we visited them previously. Also, their grilled seafood options includes fish which is pretty but lacking in portions.
Moreover, every main course, you have a choice of two sides. You have 8 choices to choose from here. Selections includes Curly fries, french fries onion rings, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, fresh salad, pan fried mushroom and trio season vegetables. Recommended sides includes their boiled vegetables and curly fires. The fries are crispy and springy, tad like the curly fries reminiscent from A&W which we come to love.
All in all, The Chefs place western place at SAFRA Mt Faber gets my recommendation for a good mix of price and quality. Two things we can often see as trade-offs. Though their selections are not perfect, it is difficult not give this place a miss for a really cheap western food place which serves quality food in air-conditioned comfort and punching above its price point.
