Dim Sum Haus

Dim Sum Haus is an affordable Chinese eatery located along Jalan Besar road. As the name of the establishment suggest, they serve a variety of Dim Sum. It is tad like those small Hong Kong coffee shop eateries servings a mix of steamed and fried Dim sum, as well as al-la-carte items. Let’s check out the Dim Sum Haus (House?) with a casual dine-in.

The eatery is located along the main road, so it is not difficult to find it. Also, it is also very accessible and conveniently located within a across the street from Jalan Besar MRT station. If you are driving, there are roadside parking as well as sheltered ones at the HDB estate across the road.

Furthermore, Dim Sum Haus offers quite a comprehensive al-larte menu selection. Here, you can get pretty good Dim Sum below $5 a pop. This comprises of a selection of steamed, fried as well as a range of Hong Kong style rice, noodles and cakes to go with your Dim Sum. Moreover, your Dim Sum arrives very promptly upon ordering with a wait time of at most 10 minutes.

Their menu offers choices of steam and pan/deep fried dim sum. Recommendations includes their steamed Xiao long bao. You get 3 pieces per $4.20. I find that the best gauge to any Dim Sum place to try to try basic staple dishes like their Xiao long bao and Fried rice.

Steamed Dim Sum offerings

On their steamed selections recommendations includes their Siew Mai, similar with 3 pieces served in a Dim Sim basket for $4.60 a pop. Also, their steamed pork ribs with yam $3.80 is a pretty good side dish for sharing too. I topped mine with their Shrimp Har Kau (3 pieces for $4.90) as well as their Steamed crystal skin prawn dumping with spinach ($4.20).

Furthermore, for those who desire more carbohydrates in their meal, or simply just need rice or noodles to go with their meal, I would recommend individual servings of their Hong Kong Dry noodle ($3.50) or their Shrimp wanton noodle ($7.20) or their Dumpling noodles at $6.10 per plate. They are quite sizeable for a person.

Additionally, if you want something to share, then two servings of their Yang Zhou fried rice ($6.30) be adequate to complete your meal. However, I found the fired rice portions tad too small for my liking.

Dim Sum Haus Yang Zhou fried rice ($6.30) is great for those who demand a carbohydrate fix to complete your meal. Be better if the servings are larger though.

In addition, the other half of Dim Sum Haus menu offerings are their fried crispy selections. This includes local recommendations such as Fried carrot cake with X.O sauce ($6.20) and a selection of pan-fried fritters and Man Tous.

The carrot cake, despite their small portions is tasty. It is fried of the white variant with generous servings of egg, without being too oily.

Topping up the fried recommendations includes their Pan fried shrimp and mango roll. You get 3 pieces at $5.30, though you can order more with 6 pieces served on a sharing plate. Lastly, there is also their Man Tou with Chicken floss and Mayonnaise (3 pieces at $3.90).

Additionally, I found Dim Sum Haus offerings really affordable value for money. My dinner costed in the range of under $130 for 15 to 18 dishes, including taxes for 6 pax. This translates to a rather affordable $20 per pax. Notably, Swee choon a largely popular competing late night Dim Sum restaurant a couple of blocks back is not as affordable as the offerings here.

Furthermore, I found out that Dim Sum can fill you up really quickly, especially when eaten with their Chinese tea with free refills. Their steamed and fried offerings are good and amazingly value for money.

All in all, I would definitely see myself back here. Do note that credit card payments are not accepted (Only cash or NETS), though they do accept Grabpay payments.

Verdict:

Must Go! | Actually pretty Good | Worth Trying | Shortlist Optionally | Should Avoid
