Ashes Burnnit is a hawker/coffee shop western food store selling a range of affordable gourmet burgers. Today, we are going to check out their Alexandra village hawker center branch with a dine-in. Physically they are located at the hawker center on the side facing Jalan Bukit Merah (facing Park royal hotel/Ikea).
Moreover, the establishment at its core is Muslim owned. Friendly staff greets you at the store entrance and gives you a buzzer during your food wait. The store accepts a range of digital as well as cash payments, as well as takeaway and online deliveries.
What’s on the menu?
Furthermore, Ashes menu offers are tad larger than typical hawker burger joints. There is only one beef/cheeseburger offering, two chicken burger option in grilled or fried variants. Also, Ashes trademark will be their black sesame burger buns which comes with every burger. It does add a hint of premium to the gourmet burgers. Also, the buns has the consistency of regular “white plain burgers and are lightly toasted with a hint of crispiness. The buns are topped with sesame. On their storefront, there appears to be an option to swap out for regular white buns, but why so?
Also, Ashes Smash cheese beef burger is their highlight and trademark offering. I found to be juicy without being overly “wet or dripping with their homemade special sauce. Ashes smash cheese burger hand crafted beef patty with cheese, lettuce, signature sauce and shallots $5.90 ($8.40 for double beef patties).
Brisket and fish options
Also, their Pulled brisket burger, 36-hour Australian brisket at $7.50 a pop ($10 with double portions). You won’t be faulted to ponder that this is not pulled pork, but rather pulled 24 hour braised Australian beef brisket, served signature sauce & lettuce.
Moreover, I found their fish burger ($7.50) tad like a mini fried bread fish and chips patty. The one I had looks tad bit over-fried and oil-soaked hard on the edges. But it’s center of the Fried alaskan pollack is still relatively chewy.
Besides their smaller than usual burger patties, I found the shallots in their beef burgers tad an odd offering as an item in the burger. I would definitely prefer a fried egg in the burger (your for $0.50 extra add-on) as opposed garnishing shallots. Additionally, your fries are available in two portion sizes, single or double. Though I would recommend sticking to a single serving of fries as it offers a good portion to portion pairing with your tiny burger.
Speedy and Not bad for the price
Moreover, your burgers are prepared made-to-order and ready in about 10mins. This is a nice delightable wait time as opposed to the horrible 2 hour wait at a similar burger joint Hammies at commonwealth hawker center. Also, your burgers are served on printed black cardboard trays. Chilli or tomato ketchup sauces as well as plastic disposable cutlery are available via self-help counters.
However, their burgers are tiny by dinner standards, but is a good portion for lunch. Still, their chicken burger is one of the larger offerings, with a relatively large patties stuffed between the similarly toasted sesame buns. Grilled chicken burger $6.90 marinated grilled chicken thigh.
Also, their chicken burger is loaded with BBQ sauce and some hints of colesaw, making it one of the more wholesome offerings here at Ashes, which is not a Ramly burger. In addition, at a glance, the shop also serves a small selection of sides, such as green salads, coleslaw, and Mac and cheese. Nothing much to scream home about.
Best Paired with an avocado drink
As an added bonus, I found pairing your burger meal with an avocado drink at their Alexendra village store a good recommendation. After all, this hawker center is also known as the “Land of avocado“. Also, do note that your burgers, like all hawker burger joints like Skirt and dirt at Tiong Bahru market and Hammies at commonwealth we visited previously, does not come with a side drink.
A recommendation is to try the avocado drink store 2 stores down. I found they serve nice affordable $2.50 avocado drink, which is great value for the offerings, and beats those by the usually popular avocado king store with their $4 watered down drinks. Notably, Ashes Burnnit Burgers is available on food delivery platforms. And take ways cost $0.30 extra per burger. Ashes also operates two more other branches at Golden Mile Food Centre in Beach Rd and Springleaf Eating House at Bedok South.
All in all, Ashes Burnnit Burgers offers pretty quality burgers at an affordable price, albeit small portions. It is hard to fault Ashes for their offerings. Their burgers are hand-made at the Sub-$10 price point is unseen in the gourmet burger scene, which places them a the place to go for cheap gourmet burgers.
Verdict:
Must Go! | Actually pretty Good | Worth Trying | Shortlist Optionally | Should Avoid
