Tech For Good 2022 (T4G2022) is an event focused in doing and bring good for the community. It is an annual innovation festival that celebrates the use of technology in helping persons with disabilities live a life of opportunities.
Furthermore, the event is organised by the Engineering Good (EG) group. The non-profit organization. Also, their notable contributions include computers against Covid and digital literacy initiatives to bring connectivity and digital inclusivity to less fortunate folks. Let’s take a walk through the one-day event today.
A day at the National Library
Moreover, this year, Tech For Good is back on its 4th installment at the National Library. Also, the one-day event hosted 30 teams comprising of members from schools and institutions of higher learning.
Furthermore, the event was held at the Singapore National Library building grounds this Formula 1 weekend. Also, for this year’s installment of Tech4good (T4G) comprises of 6 problem statements tackled by 30 innovator teams spaced out into event islands on the Library’s ground floor open concourse.
Additionally, teams are supported with 30 Mentors tagged to these individual teams, each having their own problem statement to solve.
Also, here, each island has a group of 5 teams addressing the problem through their own inventions which you can vote for. Examples includes Measuring liquid volume and managing Wheelchair transfers.
Moreover, other areas includes addressing daily digital necessities like Social communication and Audible phone calls. Also, other Tech for Good areas includes Recreation like Assisted Bowling, taking a cue from the Paralympic sport and Independent Photography.
Student showcase of assisted living ideas
Additionally, Tech For Good aims to showcase and raise awareness of assisted living technologies in anticipation of increasing caregiver demand and workload for healthcare and eldercare in the future, aggravated with the increasing greying population in Singapore.
Also, technological solution examples includes use of robotic arms to assist patients with muscular dystrophy to take photos independently.
A student- mentor pairing
In addition, each team is manned by a crew of at least 2 persons per booth. The students will gladly answer any queries you have. The students are very friendly and approachable. Every table I visited are very keen to share their personal creations they spent months working on. Also, the event ran from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, even the mid-afternoon rainy weather definitely didn’t dampen the spirits of the participants.
Also, you can find these assistive living commercial providers showcasing and hawking their products at the marketplace by the entrance of the event.
Wrapping up on the far end of the event compound is a great stage where participants can pitch their inventions. Here, the teams showcased their prototypes at their booths and also presenting their solution on stage. Additionally, there are also 2 lunchtime chats featuring assistive technology community partners. The event does has a Makerfaire vibe to it with a mix of experts and students working together.
All in all, Tech For Good is a great welcome to bring up the interest in STEM not only for students but for the general public awareness too. A humble initiative organized by Engineering Good, bringing good from Engineering.
