On the plans, on my august sporting front

3

Well with some time aside, I will talk about running and running related events as of again.

Track & Field Active and Alumni

Currently I have no planned races for July, just mostly preparations for university admissions as well as doing up interviews for my NYAA gold. I will be participating in 3 races coming Auguest though, namely the Nike+ run which I will be running for the Wildlife Fund for nature (nice to see Nike make a come back since the Nike Realrun), the Singapore Polytechnic Poly 50 as well as the Army Half Marathon 2008 with a new 21km route across the new marina bridge as a highlight.

The SP alumni will be sending in 2 teams for Poly 50 this year, held smack on early august, that was the bane to many of our runners enlisting in the Army this month. We did lose few good runners in the team because of that and our teams are still kinda shuffled and lacking a full team. I can run for both the team or I can help out as a helper as well.

However, I am hesitant to run for them despite their need for runners, as over my last 2-3 years running the Poly 50, the team helpers actually play close to half the efforts required for a running team to win and be successful, let be managing the runners, on the spot assessment of problems as well as keeping them hydrated and taken care of throughout the whole run. It’s not an easy task either. I wonder if forgoing my place in the running team this year will help much given the opportunity costs involved as we need few veterans to keep the race administrations and plans in place for all the runners. If so I am think I will be a good candidate to keep all the helpers fired up to help.

Oh yes, got my fat butt out for a nice run in last evening (Sunday), and look another run log!

Running Mileage for the week
Alexandra Park Connector Route: 11.06km – Last Sunday
Total Mileage for week: 11.06km
Body Fat: 11.2% Body Water: 64.8% of total weight
Total 2008 Accumulative Mileage: 160.33km

2008 DSTA-DSO scholarship ceremony

0

Last night was the DSTA scholarship awards ceremony 2008. The event saw the leaving graduates from the 2008 batch leaving this year as well as the prize presentation for the 2009/2010 batch of scholarship receivers and post graduates.

Held at Orchard hotel, the event saw a welcome address by Dr Tan Kim Siew, Permanent secretary and Chairman DSTA and DSO together with the keynote address by Mr Teo Chee Hean, Minister of Defense. There I received my scholarship scroll from Mr Teo followed by a stage phototaking session, performance and a dinner reception outside the main ballroom itself.

There I got to meet up with Tan Hang Cheong, SP principal, Soh Kong Pheng CEO of DSTA as well as Mr Teo Chee Hean for casual talk and discussions, particularly on plans ahead and education. There I got to meet up with the other 3 scholars from SP itself which brings the total number of scholars from Singapore Polytechnic to 4 in total, far more than any other Polytechnics in Singapore had got.

Everybody was in the light of the mood for the occasion and congrats, and a great sense of achievement constantly filled the air around us. All is very promising road ahead of us scholars as scientists and engineers in the defense science community.

The reception ended around 9pm, with Mr Teo making his move around that time, overall the event was a big success I can see, the food was good and there was enough to always constantly go around for everybody. Will be looking forward to my farewell ceremony next year, when I leave for abroad in my studies.

NYAA Gold award interview

3

I was around magazine road area today for my Duke of Edinburgh, NYAA gold award interview. Though I tend to frequent the river walk area for dinner often, I’ve not really been around the Central Mall area before as it is always around the outskirts of town. Nevertheless, I really liked how the offices, pubs and restaurants are arranged and put together in the area, so much that it’s both modern and paints a little self-contained village feel.

Their offices are located on the third floor of the 5th block, the stone walled architecture on the office facade and it’s location beside a temple really added to the NYAA building’s old authentic feel. It’s mostly a walk up office so you will be more or less greeted by flights of timber steps leading up to their 3rd floor office. There you will be kindly greeted by their staff there who will direct you to their meeting/waiting room where you can get to mingle with the other interviewees while waiting for your turn.

The interview is a one to one interview with their deputy executive director and she’s a very kind lady who will guide you along with the interview. So there is no real need to prepare for it as ultimately it’s your deeds and commitments! Overall, I can’t really tell how I fair from my interview. It’s very much a mixture- I think I did give a good impression to the interviewer, and I believe I did bring forward my point of the NYAA award being a great contributor to what I am today and how students and leaders like us can see the world today and take steps to do deeds in the benefit of the community, both local and overseas.

Through each component, I explained through my efforts in planning, organizing and aiding in events such as my residential project and adventurous journey just to name afew. However I constantly felt that it’s rather difficult to bring forward a point or impressing the interviewer with what I say. Maybe there is the exception of the interviewer’s exposure to the various events done by students, which don’t seem to raise an eyebrow in my projects? Ummm that I will have to wonder.

Nevertheless, it was a rather enjoyable causal discussion and everything was done rather in a very relaxed setting. Focused on only the award objectives, I did not bang on my portfolio, awards or achievements, neither did I let the interviewer in that I am am institutional and special awards winner (though I felt that will definitely give me a comparative edge). But I felt the constant need to leave them out of the topic as I believe that it’s something fair and humble to do to and to also level the playing field for the other Gold award candidates as well. Neither was I even complacent on my remarks from my school student development officer exclaiming that “I will have the award more or less in the bag quite easily”. I think that is not something I would like to count before the chickens are hatched either.

Nevertheless, I always tell myself- “it could be worse” and I am glad I didn’t mess it up, with the exception of few quirks here and there. My interviewer offered me the NYAA Gold awardees alumni GAHA leaflet at the end of the interview with her hand written follow-up on sending my project photographs in so that it could be used in their annual award publications. But that is only when I get selected right? Or does that mean something else?

It’s late, I will be touching on the happenings of my scholarship award ceremony this evening tomorrow.

Riding on the car-less culture

0

Though it’s officially Monday now, but it’s still in the late hours not far from Sunday, yes Sunday… I guess for most of us, Monday don’t start until the first cup of coffee on day break. So with that let just recap some of the happenings I missed for the week.

Telok Ayer Wanton Mee store

Backtracking, last Saturday was a whole day out visiting and some shopping on at IMM in the evening, what made it note-worthy that it’s a family outing all done on public transport! Yea, no driving, just plain commuting to Telok Ayer Market for the famous Wanton Mee after our Philip street temple visit. Then it’s the bus over to Grans and my aunt’s home before popping by IMM for the rest of the night.

I think we must be appreciative of the public transport we have here in Singapore, so far it’s efficient for short to medium journeys around Singapore. On the contrary, long bus terminal-to-terminal journey’s are usually not worth your 2 hours on the bus in small Singapore.

While my amazed mum couldn’t get enough of her hands full at Daiso in IMM, the thing which amazes me is how fast our journey back home was. Yes though the bus roads were rather empty then and our bus skipped a few empty stops here and there, it goes to show how much we are missing on commuting given private alternatives, given the myriad of public transport available right our doorstep itself. I grew up always having a family car, but that doesn’t mean I am an idiot to commuting either, considering that I spent almost my whole secondary and polytechnic days commuting everyday to school, if only my dad were to think differently.

Chinasquare-Telok Ayer area

The key thing is that with it being so expensive to own a car these days, everybody is all looking for alternatives, let be recyclable diesel, CNG cars, running ads on their cars, etc but isn’t the answer right in front of their noses? I’ve never did the honor of counting the dollars and cents and traveling time of each alternative, until I did, surprisingly its usually not more than 10-15mins by driving- time you can bear with. Come to think about it, you need about the same time to find a free parking lot on a Saturday in IMM and the parking fees will cost as much as your bus fare itself.

We can see that now, with whole day bus lanes coming on the way, more ERP gantries and B signal traffic lights sprouting up everywhere in favor of buses, these little things are starting to make commuting a more bearable thing from the past. Yes, public transport do have it own quirks and there, such as lugging loads around, the quick snap convenience or waiting endlessly for the buses. But think of the savings you can get by just leaving the car at home, if you have a day out with time to spare, why not? We did!

Our last car-less trip could be a learning step to the next best thing of public transport, or will be parents get the hint? Maybe let me see into try getting an electric car which runs off home roofed solar panels, maybe that may work for them.

Unexpected invitation- The special awards

0
The special awards 2008

Got an unexpected item in the mail, it’s an invitation from our permanent secretary, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim to the 2008 special awards. As naive as I was, I had to google to update myself on what the special awards is for now, as it was a never widely known or publicized event, or one that I never thought myself being able to actually attend and witness.

The special awards had not changed much from what I thought it to be- it is a prestigious event held for the top students from all the institutions in Singapore, particularly also for the recipients of the Lee Kuan Yew awards and those receiving the “All rounder awards” as well. I am honored to be able to attend it and accepted the invitation. I will be looking forward to the ceremony coming late August.

My little theory of intelligence levels of internet comments (nada)

0

You know sometimes in and out as an internet user you will encounter comments in various blogs or forums which are not always as constructive as you intend them to be. It always seems that the internet “comment” function has it’s role primary as a way of effectively (and most importantly) a way to convey constructive thoughts and feedback to the intended parties.

But as any internet user, we all know, they are mostly a mean to flame shoot or bang at anything people find unworthy and that is something worrying an evolving in internet comments. If comment posts going “FIRST!” don’t bug you, then the frequent negative criticism from user’s periodic mood swing might add more “value”. Well so I can conclude from my not-so-formal research on and being a regular reader on few high traffic blogs on blog networks such as those by Weblogs Inc. and Gawker Media (to name afew) or even videos on Youtube. Can we conclude that the average intelligence of an internet comment is close or equals to zero? Let’s put Einsteins theory to work so, to prove it.

Internet commenters stupudity joke

Yes, that is a joke and so is the math, so take no offense on this. Do note that there are of course exceptions, such as constructive feedback and comments, where we can rank them as above average comments, so don’t be offended or hesitant to comment. But so does that also mean that there is a higher concentration of intelligence from lower commenting blogs?

Having said that, striking an example, I am also a regular reader on few more professional blogs, such as medgadget for example, targeted at medical professionals and contributed by doctors alike, but despite being a almost high traffic blog (like engadget itself for example), the blog do not receive many or even zero comments for many posts.

So is riding on the saying “empty vessels make the loudest noise”, really paint the situation on internet commenting? Or are there just too much nonconstructive crap that it just paints and reiterates Einstein’s theory of human stupidity?

Original blog post:
Well it had been few weeks since I’ve updated on racing news, I think you won’t miss the Nike Human Race adverts running all around Singapore (and if them covering up queensway shopping isn’t loud enough). Nike+HumanRace is largely a charitable race with a good intentions, something I will greatly personally recommend to run at $25 per entry for a good cause- You can choose to run for UN Refugee Agency, Lance Armstrong Foundation or the World Wildlife fund for nature for the Singapore league and beats any overpriced $35 Mizuno Wave Run anytime.

This race gets my recommendation mainly for the price, charity part (not any commercial orientated run) and the very exceptional goodie bag items. There’s even an incentive for being the 1st 200 runners!

My thoughts and plans so far of the Omy Singapore Blog Awards (Best design)

3

Well, today is the 3rd day of the voting rounds of the Singapore Blog awards, and just as how campaigning fever has subsided in the States with Obama and Hilary in alliance now (with the exception of the Anwar case going on now), campaigning fever is definitely up on my side now! I am glad I have my contacts and not to mention my website traffic to help me pull in a steady stream of voters for this voting round, to date my site is 3rd in the round!

Shaun talk 2008

But of course that means having to strike a balance between my professional side/work and casual campaigning as well, and not like bugging anybody you know just as if your life depends on it, or even mentioning or hinting to people to vote for me, even in my 1000-odd convention talks, classes or even advertising for it over the various portals and websites I run, that will be stupid.

Unlike rebellious juveniles who will simply bug anybody without a care in the world, sometimes as a grown individual, you get to see the mature side of things than disturbing close friends or acquaintances for favors which kinda gives you the uncalmy feel of being indebted to even when they help you out, but I am glad everyone I approached so far was a great help!

But mind you, not that I don’t like feeling “indebted” but very much the respect I give to my friends, after all this is just a small blog competition and it boils down to what you value more and not risk going overboard. Sometimes I feel that a little reflection of your actions can go a long way. I won’t set my standards too high and the competition can be something which I am prepared to even lose, so anything else is just a bonus.

I don’t need a laptop, neither do I need a fancy phone when I win the award, so I will be considering selling or donating them to the salvation army or to my contacts in charge of the sharity gift box, but that is of course provide if I win, so I won’t count the chickens before they are hatched.

But I will be glad to be in the competition for the thrill, kick and challenge of it, as being a marathon runner, the other sporting side of me do not have a nature to give out so easily, so if you are my competitor you can be rest assured it won’t be an easy journey for you.

In all, the thing which matters most to me in this competition is winning the “best design” category will mark more than 10 years of my commitment and dedication in building and designing websites which means alot to me. The thing which amazes me is that I am glad this 5 year old, but still rather entrancing website design is still able to see me through so far.

With that, I will still bang on the bulk of my votes coming from people who visit my website, I think I might not go wrong with the traffic I get on my site. So I will leave it to unbiased people who think that I deserve the award for my contributions to blog design and development. With that, I will feel that my votes which (possibility) make me win more meaningful, not to mention deserving. I thank all my site visitors, friends and acquaintances who vote for me, your vote will be a very meaningful one and will go a long way into the competition.

Last but not least, yup here are the link, so do vote for me! You can vote once a day.

Around the corporate cushy areas

I was around back at school today after a short corporate meeting in the morning. There I managed to bump in a short one hour of gyming back at campus with my new alumni card before getting more work done in the day.

Alumni what card?
There, I was told by the gym auntie in-charge there that the alumni card I’ve got for this year’s batch is very different from the older cards issued previously- much lower in quality. This was so as I come to know after showing her how cheap and flimsy the cardboard-like laminated card I got in the mail last week (which is now peeling off at all the edges), even the photograph appears white-washed. My card which arrived in the “credit card” style holder in the letter already have it’s laminated coating damaged by simply removing it from the delivery holder, it’s that bad. For a lifetime membership thing, this card can’t even last 3 days!

New gym machines!
On a side note, the gym recently got a bump of new machines, such as a doubled number of treadmills to eight as well as the introduction of few new elliptical trainers as well as a new free weights and barbell training area, which sadly is always a hogging ground for dragon boat members. All these new additions are of course courtesy of the now dysfunct gym back at the old T14 block.

University university university
Our principal, Mr Tan was around on a tour with a few accompanying heads and directors to check out the new SP gym as well, thats where I got to chance upon him and we chatted for a while with regards to my application to the universities I am gunning for. He reassured me that I won’t go wrong and will have no problems entering the Imperial College, having not only studied there himself but also with the strong ties SP has with Imperial itself. He added that it will be a better choice as a technical college for engineering and research than Cambridge (which is ironically also one of the few Colleges I am gunning for in UK itself). He added that he will also be present at my scholarship prize presentation ceremony next week to witness all the selected SP students receiving the award as well.

Having done training, thereafter I was very much around my usual work W1115 area as a mentor helping out my juniors and undertaking project group members on some technical and software aspects of my gaming motion simulator (which they will be seeing through in their final year project). Few members were there to share their problems about group and management conflicts when forming their “ideal” teams, which I always emphasized is a very critical aspect for a team to be successful through their FYP and I was glad to be much of help in solving and giving advices which set them very much back in pace.

I did a fair bit of reflection thereafter with regards to my university choices, I mean I want to spend a significant amount of time doing research and development after I graduate, as I always want to bring something new and groundbreaking to the world, like the new age of you know!. That too, of course meaning having to do my PhD in the process as well. So the 4 year masters course in Imperial and Cambridge will be the most logical choice for a “fast track”.

I can’t deny that studying in US will be a very enjoyable experience too, with them being the preferred choice for engineering, but I felt I needed a more firm decision of choice myself rather than “going with the flow” or being so flicker minded- having never seen myself so open with so many choices at this crossroads period before. Later do I know that I got a tip off from one of my contacts who knew one of the Engineering Deans from MIT and they are interested in having us meet, whoa MIT, this will be very exciting!

Oh yes, for the record, I’ve got my NYAA Gold offer letter for interview today, double yay!

Singapore Toy and Comic Convention 2008

3

Hey here it is finally the Singapore Toy and Comic Convention 2008 was finally here. Held at the Suntec City convention center over the last weekend, the event is one of the few first public events to bring the whole toy and comic industry closer together in a series of annual cons and events held throughout the year and man was the place packed!

Here we are at Suntec for the SG Toy & Comic Con

The open stage
The open stage

There is no entrance fee and you get a neat informational booklet with coupons upon entry, so any similar minded Singaporean will sure pop by to give a look. But don’t expect to find any goldmine of limited collectors editions comics from the dusty garage sale area or find trades for that all rare issue of superman missing from your collection- our comic fan base here is almost zero to nothing, so the only stuff we are getting here are not old 5c marvel comics dating to the ages, but rather reprints and rather commercialized bookstores simply selling their “goods”.

Few reputable companies were there as well, Imaginary Friends, the company which brought us the rather nice drawings and illustrations we can see in Capcom games (just to name afew) were there as well. Well not that the design scene in Singapore is appreciative of their work or many who know about them unless you are in the field. They have a life photoshop session on the projectors during showtime, where you can catch a few paint brush and spray tips here and there, but otherwise, for the average layman visitor there, all they can do is simply is stare in awe as the artists transforms a plain document into a nicely coloured illustration. Gary Erskine, who brought us lots of comics, notably even back from the old transformers era (no kids, it’s not that generation of transformers you see on TV now) was present at my visit and he was around to sign autographs as well as work on few on-the-spot commissions. Even old masterQ (lau fo zi) was there as well so that really added to the asian touch of the show, interesting.

Some inedible bread anyone?
Some inedible bread anyone?

I was surprised to find an Singapore Polytechnic booth there as well, NUS was there too, specifically their comic club, but their presence was so small, I hardly even took notice. Otherwise for education institutions that very much about the attendance besides few private animation school offering courses of their own. I was surprised to find Mr Choy, one of my old lecturers who taught me in school back then who was the lecturer on duty at the SP booth that time. He proudly showed me his exhibits on display together with some background information and him being the coordinator chairperson of the event for the SP booth. Looks like they are intending to use the not only to showcase student’s works but largely to sell their design and animation courses as well.

For the average visitor, this con is definitely an eye-opener for many, but if you’ve been to overseas comic enthusiasts conventions, things are really very much different, and they usually have one thing- focus and a very large fanbase, in fact it’s the people themselves there which makes it such a big hit, but it’s no evident here.

One reason why I find this local con rather disappointing is that besides it’s rather commercialized feel, there is no solid targeted crowd, with toys, dolls, game consoles, manga, animation, Japanese, Taiwan, Americian comics all thrown in one area. It’s like the organisers just want to hold the event to make a quick buck or two. You can’t put them all together and it dilutes the feel and authenticity of each genre. Coupled with a weak fan base here, it just makes this con here feel kind of aimless, not to mention pointless. There is no exclusivity as well especially with almost all “collectables and comics” sold can be brought from any common comic store on the streets. But hey I am in no position to talk about all this, so only things will change when our comic fanbase here becomes bigger.

On the forefront, we won’t be looking forward to the size of comic cons we see in the States such as those by Marvel or Dark horse fans, neither will we be seeing a Blizzard con or an E3 equivalent on our shores too soon too, but hey at least this is some baby steps forward into realizing that in in the future to come.
