Singapore Formula Drift – USA’s Ryuji Miki Champion

0

Though I have a whack more for continental cars more than Japanese tuner cars, the recent formula tuner drift held on April 27 was a sold out crowd at the Changi exhibition center, with Team USA’s Ryuji Miki taking the crown in his RX-7. You can check out more on their site at www.formuladrift.com.sg.

So the Japanese who started the drift craze will more or less be the naturals in the field (with the exception of tofu delivery on Akina), here is a small short video of zen in appreciation to just what they do as a pastime back in Japan ontop of the quickest way of turning rubber into smoke:

Polysics- I My Me Mine (Strong Machine 2 Version)

0

Here is quite a cool dance by Mao Murakami an 11-year-old in “Polysics- I My Me Mine”. Apparently she is called Strong Machine 2 which her group generally call themselves as part of a Japanese dance group focused on robotic dances.

Shes good, especially doing the robot at 0:58, I think she can even trash many of us considering how we dance in our clubs (lol), even I can’t dance like that haha!

Awarded my overseas DSTA Scholarship!

12
Shaun ze DSTA scholar!

Whee! Got a letter from my scholarship provider, the Defense Science Technology Agency today congratulating me on being awarded their scholarship! It will include fully paid fees for overseas studies in a top overseas university (as stated in their letter) including accommodation, not to mention all the nitty gritty book and computer fees as well! Woot! Now I just got to get all those enrollment stuffs settled. UK here I come!

Ultimately, this scholarship is what I will be going for. At this point of time looking at all the unopened NUS letters and enrollment packages they had sent over the past weeks, me ponders should I reject the NUS Global Merit Scholarship offer during their last round of interview next month and maybe give someone else more deserving that place.

Volkswagen Park Assist Vision, where cars do “it” all for you!

1

Well, we’ve seen self parking cars in the Lexus IS series, and Volkwagen with their “Park Assist”, in its Touran, Tiguan, Passat and Passat estate to help drivers parallel park. Now Volkswagen is presenting the next evolution of self parking cars with it’s new “Park Assist Vision”. Now parking a car out of it will definitely turn heads!

Release: Volkswagen Park Assist Vision

The only thing the driver needs to do is select an available space on the monitor of the navigation system, set the selection lever of the automatic-drive vehicle (DSG) to “P” and alight from the car. The driver can, of course, choose to stay in the vehicle until the vehicle has been manoeuvred into its space.

Cameras and ultrasound sensors (as parking aids) located in the left and right exterior mirrors are responsible for gauging the dimensions of the parking space. The video signals are transmitted to a 2-GHz high-performance computer which then analyses them and sends commands to the steering and drive systems.

If the driver has himself initiated the parking manoeuvre, the “Park Assist Vision” will reverse the vehicle into the parking space in accordance with the previously computed course and using electromechanical power steering, the electronic parking brake, DSG and the engine power produced by the idling mixture.

Two additional cameras at the front and rear of the vehicle as well as the system’s ultrasound sensors monitor the operation and will stop the vehicle if necessary. The driver may also interrupt the manoeuvre at any time using the remote control.

This new driver assistance system is still in the trial phase of development, and a date has not yet been set for introduction of the system to series production.

Virtual Map streetdirectory.com denied leave to appeal

0

Following up on the recent lawsuits, unfortunately Virtual Map streetdirectory.com had been denied leave to appeal, so as stated in this press release.

VIRTUAL MAP DENIED LEAVE TO APPEAL

Singapore, 21 April 2008 – The High Court has declined to grant Virtual Map (VM) leave to appeal a ruling in its ongoing copyright infringement case with the Singapore Land Authority (SLA). Justice Tan Lee Meng found insufficient grounds to grant the leave in a private hearing this morning.

VM now has seven days to take its case to the Court of Appeal where it will again seek leave to appeal.

“This is a slight setback for us, but we’re definitely going to continue and take the case to the Court of Appeal. There’s a strong belief in the VM camp that we’ve always strived to conduct our business ethically and fairly, and this is a cause we feel is worth fighting for,” said VM Managing Director Firdhaus Akber.

VM also intends to apply for a Stay of Execution which will allow it to continue providing the disputed maps on streetdirectory.com until the case is fully resolved.

“Right now, one of our biggest concerns is getting our maps back online for streetdirectory.com’s users and clients. While all our secondary features are available, the maps are crucial to many businesses and commuters. We will start bringing them back once we have obtained a stay of execution,” he said.

SLA claims VM had infringed its copyright by continuing to provide maps the latter had developed using SLA’s raw data, even after VM’s license to the data was terminated in 2004.

Since streetdirectory.com returned without maps on 14 April 2008, VM has received “a massive number of calls and emails” from the public inquiring when the website will resume full functionality.
It was shut down for two weeks in order to upgrade software and data applications, as well as to remove the disputed maps.

Virtual Map, also known as VM, is a technology firm that specializes in developing location-based software and solutions. Established in 1999 the company has developed specialized skills in the area of geomatics, wireless communication, GPS tracking, vehicle navigation and mobile applications.

VM is also a content owner and aggregator specializing in the collation, processing and dissemination of high quality raster imagery and location-based datasets.

A significant part of the company’s operations involved collating and processing geographic, location-based information for Singapore and in the Asia Pacific Region. These datasets are then integrated into our various IT platforms depending on client requirements.

Currently VM is able to provide turnkey location-based solutions for Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia and Taiwan. We have offices in Singapore (HQ) and Jakarta.

Da ubber PC up and running, Windows Vista pitfalls

6
Shaun tons of Harddisks

Finally, finally! got my PC up and running at full capabilities, that is of course with an absence of 1-2 days having to deal with unsupported so far my experience with Vista had been a bitter-sweet one, but I guess that is something I will have to live with as Windows XP, though faster have it’s software limitations as well. The last weekend was spent mostly backing up my data, about 400GB odd of work and raw video which took almost a whole day plus and overnight transfer over 4 harddisks before I can free a spare 500GB drive for my PC.

When I finally got vista up and running, Benchmarked my PC 3D Mark 2006 score of about 11600 at stock non-overclocked speeds speeds which is reasonable for a not so high end budget upgrade. Based on future mark’s website other systems based on my similar Quad core processor, single GPU configuration can go up to close of 15k scores when overclocked, but overclocking is something I won’t be doing.

Getting vista to run programs is almost like my experience with trying to install series 60 symbian applications in my phone- It’s horrible! Many of my favorite programs are not compatible and I had to scourge the web for updates and support. Here are some difficulties of “complains” as of date.

  • Vista is very slow
Especially when updating patches after Service pack1 (SP1) it can even take 10-15mins to shutdown. System resources on boot takes up more than 1GB of ram default. True there are registry tweaks here and there and disabling eyecandies, but these are just merely ways round the main problem. Moreover, vista deals with files very messily, leaving alot of fragmented items here and there so that it can index it’s searches faster, defragmenting and putting all these during startup/shutdown adds to the load times.
  • Vista folder structure is very different from XP
You need sometime getting used to the directory structure and how vista stores their files here and there. Gone are the “documents and settings: folders in place of the “Users” folder. I am ok with it if that is the requirement for But as mentioned, it’s not a big flaw but just increases the starting learning curve alittle, especally if you are a user of the previous verisons of windows.
  • Lots of software are incompatible with Vista
My version of Norton internet security 2007 had problems even starting up in Vista, prior to changing to a more reliable antivirus system, I had to make do with my old one as I have few spare licenses still yet to be used. Thankfully, symantec they have an update on their website.
Vista can still make do with few of my older programs such as MIRC, and Winrar which I brought as older versions, it seems that the more basic the program, the least compatibility problems it have with vista. On top of that, my work and productivity programs like Office all running fine as well.

On a sidenote, DirectX9.0 is not included in Vista, even in SP1 so you need to install it if you have older DirectX9 specific programs and games.

  • Lots of drivers are incompatible with Vista
This is my biggest headache. There were quite alot of trail and errors trying to get vista to work with old XP driver. I had to junk my old WinTV Tuner card as it caused bluescreen errors upon shutdown, so no watching TV and FM radio on my PC from now on.

Moreover, I initially had a hard time get my old Creative Audigy soundcard to work in Vista, even the official Creative drivers are so so horrible in getting it done- it didn’t not do a proper job to install the gameport drivers. That where I got some working third drivers from Brazilian programmer Daniel Kawakami, who wrote a Vista support universal package installer and auto-detected my card and installed the required drivers in a charm (contrary to creative official ones having to manually select your model). But such drivers will be quite shortlived if you were to follow the sate of lawsuits at the moment, so as he said after being threatened by Creative:

Creative purposely modified the Audigy drivers to disable some features when Vista is detected and also purposedly introduced some bugs to prevent some XP utilities from running.

I did a complete analysis of the driver to determine where all the checks and bugs were introduced and started modding…

Creative drivers had long notoriously been horrible, not to mention their super-paranoia bundled programs available on their website only as updates (you cannot download full programs there, even if it requires the hardware to run). The thing I do not understand is that why must they eat into and condemn 3rd party drivers which actually work while theirs don’t?

Moreover, the fact that they are purposely not supporting their older products to get people to buy their newer ones is a big no-no to me, in terms of customer relations with respect to PR and marketing. I am starting to drift further from patronizing Creative soundcards now, they should be rest assured that my next soundcard will definitely not be a Creative one. Patriotism? eat that home-grown slime.

You can read more of it here

That is all I have to date. Luckily I did not purchase the 64-bit version of vista, or I don’t think I will even be done installing all the crap by now. For the good side, the “Im lovin it” part of vista will definitely be the Aero interface which allows 3D scrolling of windows together with effect. So as I come to know, can be enabled at the quick launch menu or pressing the “app” icon on my Logtitech G3 mouse, wow so at least I am fully utilizing my mouse now! The instant search function is also neat too.

The thing is now after installing all the need MS patches, things are starting to get up to speed. So in the end once you get it all up and running, that is where everything will truely shine. Fired up C&C Kanes Wrath last night and continued my saved campaign, completing all campaign missions on Hard difficulty at the ultra settings and 1920×1200- I am starting to appreciate what I can’t do on my old PC now.

Serangoon Broadway graduation attire collection and yesterday’s flagday

0

As you know SP graduation attire is very much different than what it was years ago- with a simple white shirt/blouse with black pants/skirt- very much a waiter’s reception we would say, so with the way enroute on “progress”, apparently, a more formal graduation attire and robe is required for the grandulous occasion since last year, this year being the 2nd batch to don it during the day which every poly student dreams for.

Serangoon Broadway Attire Rental

Serangoon Broadway is the appointed agent for distribution and management of the attire situated along the outskirts of Bendemeer from Potong Pasir MRT and along Serangoon Road. You can find out more details on the graduation here, together with the directions to get there.

I was there to collect my attire today, slightly ahead of the slot for my course but they were ok with it anyway. The thing is that the staff there do not speak english well, so ok when that is not a big issue, once you are done with all attire given to you based on their recommendations (you can give it a try in their studio), they will start selling you all their photo studio packages and try to get you to commit into placing (assumably non-refundable) deposit for their family studio packages costing $160 for a minutely pathetic photo to $2000 over for their flagship size, with everything, “free, free, free” so as they exclaimed. The most descent package will set you back in the mid of a $1000 over, which I think is where they make from you. The funny thing is that so coincidentally too, today is the last day of the “offer” for big big discounts. I won’t be surprised if every student who visited the place got bombarded with all these sales and to succumb to them too (another family was there as well).

It was quite challenging trying to “smoke out” without pissing them off- it’s harder than you thought once inside, you need to take off your shoes in another studio, so it’s like a barrier and you can’t simply just run off like that. Nevertheless all we all got out one by one and left just with what we only wanted and came for- my rented graduation attire.

Oh yes, on a separate occasion, yesterday’s was my Sree Narayana fund raising flagday for their elderly wellness and daycare centre. It was more of less a morning to afternoon event selling flags around orchard road. The marshals were all active volunteers of the welfare home who all came down to help, even still dressed in their nursing work attire- so it’s quite funny seeing them selling flags on the streets. There were also students as well as few public volunteers including me involved in the event, otherwise they were a very friendly bunch and a pleasant experience working with.

2TB of space! wohahahaha

2

Part II of pimp my PC was today, in other words, yes was around Simlim got a quick swipe at few more items to make my PC complete. That means picking up a western digital 1TB harddisk ($322) together with Vista Home Premium ($129). Amazingly alot of stores are still selling vista at like $167 to $179 and the WD Harddisk at $385-$460, how is that so with some stores are still able to sell the exactly same thing at the price I paid for?

Apparently, later do I know after chatting with some store owners there that actually some distros (and MS) gives some kind of bulk and loyalty discounts to some stores, while some pass the savings directly to customers, many will still direct the savings (poof!) into their company itself and keeping prices still at the recommended retail rate, there are however always one or two stores which can go lower. So the moral is if you want to find big bargains in SLS, do your homework- bury yourself in the papers!

The Western Digital harddisk I’ve got is the greenpower series with a variable rpm from 5400-7200rpm depending on use and comes rated with about 40% energy savings compared to other full fledged 7200rpm 1TB drives, something not really meant to scream in terms of performance but hey I only needed “environmentalists approved” computer storage!

Got back and started the gigabtyes flying around drive to drive for my backup.
I know that the actual drive capacity is always less than the usable capacity, but not so much that it is more than a physical harddrive itself! My 1000GB drive comes up as 930GB formatted- so that almost a full 80GB harddisk ($60 bucks) taken out, I should get a discount!

For a personal record, now I have about 2000GB of harddisk space comprising of 1x500GB Hitachi Enterprise Deskstar + 1xWD 1TB drive + 2x250GB Hitachi Deskstar drives. I won’t be counting those 1 or 2 80GB harddisks I have lying around the house, until I can find them too, but hey that quite negligible already.

Got My New Yorkfield Quad Core PC!

2
Shaun's 2008 PC Upgrade

Got some cool stuff today, or like those peeps in hardware zone will call “a Hoot”, will let ya in for in with this teaser on the left to figure out the parts.

I wanted to challenge myself in building a sub 10k 3Dmark2006 PC around $1000 without overclocking, the budget itself is a challenge I gave myself too, but I think in the computer world, what you pay is what you get. This system will be a major upgrade from my current Pentium 4 system, retaining hard disk, power supply, media drives and casing. This is so after countless revisions and price checks over the last months, finally I can have a capable system both for work and play!

Part are brought from various stores based on my research since the past month (with stores):
Intel Quad Core Q9450 Processor (1333FSB) + MSI Neo-3 P35 ATX Motherboard- $657 (Bliss)
4GB (2x2GB) Kingston DDR800 PC6400 ram – $136 (Powersys)
Powercolor ATi Radeon HD3870 DDR4 512MB – $305 (Fuwell)

Total: $1098

I was rather satisfied and fortunate to get the processor and board at that price as no store will sell them to anyone so low before, kudos going out to the helpful staff at Bliss computers. The Radeon card comes with a professional cooling system from Zalman, so it’s very much a dual slot cooler card with ultra zippy DDR4 memory- ATi’s most powerful single GPU solution to as of date.

I was initially considering the cheaper Geforce 9600GT ($239) for my graphics solution till Vista SP1 came along with DirectX10.1 support, which yields a promising 20% increase in performance in Assassin’s Creed with 4XAA enabled. Assassin’s Creed is one the first DirectX 10.1 game to be released recently and only the Radeon HD3800 series cards are the more future-proof cards in the market today with DirectX10.1 support, therefore my rather unusual shift to ATi considering my 2 previous graphic solutions being Nvidia cards.

Assembled and replaced all my old PC parts in the evening and got everything tested and working, only that my re-animated hard disk with XP refuses to boot in my new system, it’s not an activation problem, which I can get done by calling up Microsoft tech support, but more of a boot incompatibility. So a backup, reformat and re-installation of XP is the cleanest solution. The bad being that I hate reinstalling all my programs and games when I get vista soon, gonna pop by SLS soon or maybe tomorrow to get Vista home premium with SP1 so I can get my system up and running by next week.

Now to backup about some 400GB of data… sigh.

2008 IPPT cleared

10

Passed my IPPT with a silver at Maju Camp yesterday. Despite able to get a silver, it was my worst result to date, with 3 points (C) scored for standing board jump and 2.4km run with 21 points total. It was like Oh my Gosh, 11:14 for 2.4km? that was like more than 1 minute since I ran last year, this result is just merely 16 seconds more for the next level of incentive pass, looks like my hectic schedule these days are really eating into my fitness program, considering that I had not been running as often.

Despite that, this year will be my last year taking my IPPT under CAT X (Category X) or also known as the under 24 age group. I will be in CAT Y next year, with the IPPT standards set whee bit easier for both passing and silver and Gold as well!

Was around school earlier in the day, as in still yesterday, with one of the SP videography staff, Mr Stanley beforehand who is doing a video shoot for the upcoming SP graduation ceremony. I was one of the chosen ones to be featured in it, so it was very much a whole afternoon of filming on the blue screen studio together with some shots all round campus such as my project word area and the pool side gym.

Managed to catch up on some casual chatting with the gym auntie (since I was there) as well as my project center TSO, Mr Suhaimi, before heading down to Maju for my 5pm IPPT. Spent the rest of the evening in my Cousin’s home who wanted to meet up do do up this e-commerce website, his parents gave me a lift home thereafter. It was a busy day, yesterday, no wonder I was “spent” by IPPT time in the evening!

Today is a well deserved rest day besides having some body aches here and there having not properly cooled down from the IPPT, on top of having to help my mum with some major grocery shopping later.

Streetdirectory.com comes back online (press release)

4

Yup Streetdirectory.com is coming back up online, here is the official press release, thanks to Glenn from Virtual Map public relations for sending this in.

STREETDIRECTORY.COM COMES BACK ONLINE

Singapore, 14 April 2008 – Taking its first step towards becoming fully functional again, Streetdirectory.com came back online at 4:20am today with most of its popular features including bus/ MRT guides and a search function for amenities (ATM, restaurants, etc) in the vicinity of any given address. While the maps of Malaysia and Indonesia are available, Singaporeans will have to continue waiting for their maps.

The website’s holding company Virtual Map has applied for a leave to appeal a High Court judgement on copyright infringement claims brought against the former by the Singapore Land Authority. Streetdirectory.com, the website for maps and travelling directions, was taken down for two weeks as the disputed maps were removed and the software engine upgraded.

Mr. Firdhaus Akber, Managing Director of Virtual Map says, “We’d like to apologise to our users for the inconvenience caused during the few days that streetdirectory.com was down. We read comments in online forums and also met people who were very much affected by the loss of our service, so today is an attempt to respond to their feedback. While we regret that the maps of Singapore are still not up, hopefully the secondary functions like our bus and MRT guides will, in some small way, help ease their inconvenience.”

Virtual Map is currently seeking leave to take the case to the Court of Appeal, after a High Court dismissed Virtual Map’s first appeal. The court will decide on the 21st of April if the leave to appeal is granted.

Virtual Map, also known as VM, is a technology firm that specializes in developing location-based software and solutions. Established in 1999 the company has developed specialized skills in the area of geomatics, wireless communication, GPS tracking, vehicle navigation and mobile applications.

US Ivy Universities talk at Civil Service College, more interviews

0
Civil service college US Talks 2008

It was a busy weekend. Was at the Civil Service College (CSC) yesterday, University of Chicago, Dartmouth, Duke, Stanford, Wellesley and Yale were there to give a talk about each of their universities. It was largely a talk on “selling” their colleges, which I personally think, well, is not exactly needed considering the excess of applications the Ivy league Universities receive every year.

So it’s more of a session for them to talk alittle bit more of the information you can find of their websites, touching on student life to even the nitty-gritty things like the presence of inter-campus shuttle bus services and study area opening times for muggers. The 2 hour session only managed a bleakly short 10mins Q&A at the end, held in an auditorium spilling out in the excess of an odd 300 audience strength. Then, unlike most other college talks, the speakers all simply just vanished thereafter, so it’s very difficult to get any post-sessions questions through at all, even if you try catching them on their way out, it was that bad.

Majoring in mechanical engineering is a very interesting topic with relations to the choice of universities, after all worldwide rankings are irrelevant with respect to your chosen major (contrary to it being an important factor perceived by most Singaporeans). I guess that is the same for other majors such as economics, let be the arts. So after narrowing down an considering my options, these are the colleges I will be going for and hopefully able to enter, based on preference:

  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Stanford University
  • Cambridge University
  • Imperial College London

I won’t exactly say that I am setting my standards too high, but I just want to push and see how far my achievements can bring me, because you won’t know until you try. However, the thing which is really bugging me is the SAT scores required to enter my first 2 choices, based on statistics, 21% of successful applicants actually scored 750 to the perfect score of 800 for each SAT component, my scores are not even close! But it is something I have to endure now as studying is US not only cheaper given the exchange rates now, the college atmosphere is generally better too.

DSTA scholarship interview
Had my DSTA interview early today, it’s the last of the DSTA interviews for me. As expected, the interview was generally geared more towards authoritarian fault finding, in other words trying to find all possible ways which can be possibly wrong with you under pressure, so that may be a tip or two for those taking it.

I managed to handle and answer all their questions, including technical ones and didn’t mess up as a whole, but I constantly felt that there was something missing throughout the interview- I can’t engage them, it’s like a wall between me and them. After all we are talking about interviews by the top management, specifically with the Chief Executive, so I guess it was natural if this form of distancing was evident. Given that, I can’t really tell how well I did, even wildcards such as perfect grades or institutional awards don’t seem to raise an eyebrow. But I think it could be better than actually screwing up- things could be worse, so I think did not that bad overall, reassured by witnessing an occasional discreet nod of approval between the 2 interviewers bleakly at times, hope all goes well.
