Merchant Court Swissotel Ellenborough Market Cafe Buffet

0
Merchant court Swissotel Market Place Buffet Dinner

This evening we were at Merchant Court Hotel. Tonight was the planned second part of my mum’s birthday dinner celebrations with my family at the Ellenborough Market Cafe restaurant, only that theres no cake and cards planned for this round as compared to last week’s round. It’s an international buffet with an adequately sound spread of Local, Western, Thai and Seafood.

I remembered dining at the Ellenborough Market Cafe (not the like the free and easy movenpick marketplace or village) before quite a few times, but I didn’t had quite an impression of the place and I wonder why. The place is similarly lined and styled to a traditional market place setting typical to that of the early western colonial days with lots of china displays and red wood around to boot. Only that those big signs and posters dominating the walls previously had all been removed.

Merchant court Swissotel Market Place Food!

Though there’s more than enough in the international buffet to fill you up greatly, but what I think the place lack is variety within each of the various cuisines itself, it’s simply just a very large cuisine spread to encompass all, but not as much as I seen from other buffets of the similar price per head- There is just a small short row for Chinese and Western dishes all over the place. Theres a central salad bar a long dessert row which doesn’t really catch your eye with the exception of the rather nice durian pudding. A miserable Japanese section cease to exist with only 2 dishes which also seem to go empty despite being constantly refilled. Far tucked in a corner where the Thai and Seafood resides which I guess not many people know much of either. Then there this usual “chief’s special corner” where you can check back regularly for whats been served in the “first come first served” batter.

Quality is exception, no burnt or over cooked food so quality is very much on par with standards for the price range. Also, commendably, the staff there were exceptionally friendly and helpful, only that you can’t stay around past 10pm for a chat as it’s closing time by then. The place is always packed on weekends and if you are lucky, you can get a reservation indoors contrary to sitting outside by the river walk which by itself isn’t as good as it sounds. Seating, space and the ambiance is OK. Overall the joint is not a place for those who prefer the fine touch as it caters to more of a social group with prices slightly above most social groups would willingly accept. Not a place I would bring guests to, but otherwise a nice place for family dinners or with a group of school friends and such for a casual outing.

2008 Honda Odyssey Touring

1
Honda 2008 Odyssey

What do you get when you cross the front of a Liana and the rear a Chrysler Grand Voyager? You get the 2008 Honda Odyssey Touring. Contrary to the 2007’s lower and more sportier Odyssey, the 2008 model had definitely much grown up with more practically as a family MPVs it provides for. Honda’s incrementalist approach to improving its models continues unabated – with a facelift to match it with the new similarly styled Accord.

It seems that the Stream and Airwave models in Singapore will still continue as the lower end MPVs. And while this new this look will come much of a disappointment who those who fell for the 2007 Odyssey looks “with the unmatchable sports handling from an MVP”, it’s time Honda set it cross hairs straight on their flagship people-carrier model to achieve what MVPs are built for – for the down to earth and practical family people.

Honda 2008 Odyssey Rear

Practically comes with practical looks – off with the flashy low profiles and glaring front headlamps in place of more conservative looking face which won’t give your children the chills when come to. But the main difference is the engine of the Odyssey EX-L, spotting a more fuel-efficient, 3.5-liter V6 Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) i-VTEC powerplant. This deactivate two or three of its six cylinders when they’re not needed, such as during cruising or deceleration.

The Odyssey comes filled with toys too, with new Bluetooth HandsFreeLink and onboard Navigation just to name afew. Throw the baby in reverse and see the rear-view mirror come to life with video feed from the rear camera display, with memory-linked side mirrors with tilt function.

Viral Runs and more SP gyming out!

0
Alexandra Canal Park Run Sights

I was down with a slight cough over late last week, a viral infection possibly caught from my mum who is ironically gotten less hindered by it now contrary to me, but I kept it at bay with lots of fluids and that not as much rest. Nevertheless caught up with the runs this week, with nice scenic runs along my favorite Tanglin Alexandra canal route to boot.

I was hoping to clock at least 70km in total for the 2 weeks but fall short of 15km to the target as I won’t be able to find time to run this busy weekend. So the total runs for this week including the unaccounted mileage from last week totals a descent 54.98km to 736.33km in total so far for this year. Strangely when you run with a sore throat you actually feel better and cleared during the run, it’s usually at the end of the run when phlegm starts to build up in my throat again, dammit!

This week also saw a revisit to the SP gym and dang is the place much in the ruins now – the staff center toilet is demolished for upgrading in line of the pool-retiling works, so the next nearest toilet is a good 400m away. This didn’t came much of a problem for me as I always gym with my required equipment and hydration too keep me self-adequate for hours at ago, contrary to most students who need to visit the toilet regularly for a drink. Moreover, the toilet closure as told by the Gym in-charge actually turned down quite a few people due to the lack of changing rooms or place to put their bags. This actually came to quite a welcome to many as lesser people = more free machines and little or no station waiting time.

Moreover, my last gym visit saw my record distance (12km) I’ve ever did at a ago on treadmill. Though minute compared my regular run distances, it’s actually quite an irritating feat to get the treadmill to go for so long- being only programmed to only dish out training intervals of 30mins maximum, it made such a big fuzz on the distance and 30mins maximum possible running time. I had to constantly reset the treadmill each time it forces me to cool down after the 30mins mark, 3 times in all to be exact! Irritating!

😈 Would be looking forward to get my RS400sd sometime soon. My dad offered to purchase it for me as a reward for my last semester results. Now I am thinking should I go for the RS800sd.. evil me…

SPH’s omy (www.omy.sg MMS 75858) Trade Launch Party at Clark Quay

0

The Omy.sg launch party was on tonight and shaunchng.com was in on a trade invitation. So what else can we do on a holiday but PARTY? Held at Clarke Quay’s outdoor atrium where the fountains are we see a fusion of fellow bloggers together with corporate guests all gathering to witness the sneak preview and soft launch of the site itself before everyone else (25th Sept is the date folks!).

The night party
Fancy!
Burp! Liquor!
Burp! I am not “driving”

Omy.sg is Singapore’s first bilingual news and interactive portal launched by Singapore Press holdings. It’s due to be officially launched on the 25th of September & showcases a fusion of news content from SPH themselves together with interactive web 2.0 content, mobile application, lobangs, showbiz & games just to name afew.

Moreover, it’s an instant mobile-photo news site where you can send in your MMS photos on anything captured hot from your handphone to 75858 or emailed to 75858@omy.sg if may. Take it like STOMP.sg but much better all round!

Buffet!

The event saw quite a few outstanding features of the site as well, namely few of the services they provide such as being able to also recieve offline IM (like MSN) through SMS, a Google Earth powered lobang finder and a citizen journalism section encouraging budding contributors from the community.

Talked and exchanged name cards with few of the trade visitors there. Whats more there’s a quality buffet dinner with free flow of champagne, red wine & soft drinks, not to mention showgirls roaming around with their Sony Ericsson K810i phone snapping pictures of you to be used on the event’s OMY crazy photo competition. And my, I know the emmys are over, but my photo was called out as a nominee up to go against 5 others in the party to win a brand new laptop PC!

Goodie bag and Stuff

Lol, but I didn’t win the laptop anyway (and not that I actually needed one), but I close! There was only one winner who was rubber faced enough for the cameras to be selected for the “000oooo-my” expression, Congrats!

Nevertheless all of us walked away with a rather attractive special goodie bag as well. Looking back it’s not everyday where you get to stand on stage making funny faces while 6 over photojournalists from SPH go crazy snapping pictures and video taping all over you under the spotlight, if my gypsy ball don’t fail me I think I might just appear on tomorrow’s papers, again! & man will I look freaky!

In media goodie bag you get an information leaflet about the site together with a pointer mouse pad and some miscellaneous cards and other free invites to various upcoming party events. It’s the mid autumn festival too so a mooncake is included in the package as well! For me I got an additional prized goodie bag containing a boynq USB VOIP handsfree speaker together with an Asiaone USB hub mousepad from my constellation gift.

Thats all folks! Omy!

Radicurl FYP Simulator software working!

0

After countless efforts over the past few days in the workshop to get the software for our simulator force feedback calculator to work, our fruits are starting to pay off – we managed to get readings all the direct X .dll output from the games we tested today, namely Need for Speed Most Wanted and EA sports Formula 1 2006 Season.

Our setup consisted of a dedicated gaming PC sending all raw force feedback values to a networked PC which will handle all the decoding, event situations and translate out actuator outputs via a USB interface board. The simulator will also feature a single or dual monitor screen setup for the operator.

These, together with Collin McRae Rally and Microsoft Flight Simulator are the games we will be focusing on the trade exhibition for our visitors and the general public when they come and test out of system. Highlight-able games will be Formula 1, chosen as it would be an interest to many now in Singapore, and the Rally game will be the best game to showcase the off-road effects and vibrations we can get from the game. MS Flight simulator will showcase the cross-platform ability of our gaming system able to transition from racing to flight sims with great ease, which is one of our key features. Ahhh it feels all good to get things accomplished and task ticked off the planner.

Dissecting Microsoft Direct X API for games, it’s kinda unreal you can get so much data at your finger tips when you are playing your Direct X-compatible game – too much to a certain extent. Different games will output different Direct X event values at different game events in the game itself, e.g. collision force feedback forces in Need for speed most wanted will output positive and negative values for frontal and rear collisions respectively. While the EA Formula 1 game seems to have force feedback on one axis from frontal feedback.

The lists goes on for skid, braking lateral-Gs when turning, nitrous boosts, gear shifts, vibrations from uneven/offroad surfaces – it just simply adds a whole lot of capability to our system and how we want it to be returned to the user as feedback. I guess we can all heave a sigh of relief with this software big block cleared.

Lastly, we finalized our design intent with our Supervisor Mr Choong today, we gave the go ahead for our design. Bringing the project back on timeline target. The plan is to have our Simulator running on electric actuators running off a serial or USB output from our force calculation PC (Gaming PC is separate from the force feedback PC). So we need to do alot of research and look for vendors in Singapore selling such systems to cater to our needs. Our actuators are Rod type Actuator with at least 50cm of travel and able to deliver 3 horsepower peak so if anyone out there who have contacts from the actuators and controller do feel free to reach me through the site’s contact form of leave a comment in this blog entry.

Intel to launch Penryn on Nov 12th, USB 3.0 proposed

0
USB 3.0

With USB 2.0 starting to show it’s age, the first members of the USB 3.0 promoter group including HP, Intel Microsoft, NEC Corporation, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments said that USB 3.0 will deliver more than ten times the data transfer bandwidth of USB 2.0, which tops out at 480 Mb/s. The new interface will be designed to be used in consumer electronics and mobile applications to be able to deal with digital media file sizes that are likely to exceed 25 GB.

Intel said that USB 3.0 will be based on current USB technology and ports and cabling will be backwards compatible; however version 3.0 will offer enhancements for better protocol efficiency and lower power consumption. The development group will also integrate an upgrade path to optical capabilities for USB.

Only time will tell for the improvement of USB. A completed USB 3.0 specification is expected to be released in the first half of 2008.

Penryn launching earlier than expected
Intel first 45 nm processor based on the Penryn core will be officially introduced on Nov 12th 2007. While there were no details available immediately, Penryn is expected to debut in dual- and quad-core desktop versions (with up to 410 million transistors) initially. The chip will be available earlier than generally anticipated and could beat AMD’s 65 nm Phenom to the market. 15 new 45 nm processors are scheduled to be introduced by the end of the year and another 20 in the first quarter of 2008. In total, there will be more than 750 prodcuts integrating a Penryn process in the near future, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said during his opening keynote.

“We expect our Penryn processors to provide up to a 20 percent performance increase while improving energy efficiency,” Otellini said. He noted that two 45 nm fabs, D1D in Oregon and Fab 32 in Chandler, Arizona are in full production at this time.

While we can see this chip primarily targeted to compete head to head with the “crippled” 3-cored AMD 64 also due to be released into the market soon, the executive also announced that Intel’s 45 nm processors and 65 nm chipsets would use halogen-free packaging technology beginning in 2008 in order to make these products more environment-friendly.

More darn changes to the simulator design

0

It turns out some projects will require constant design revisions to be perfect. Got news from my teammate that our supervisor wants another design change to the design of the simulator, namely making it more “unique” however, this means having to go a full 360 degrees into a total revamp, reason being our design is common for most simulators. If this is so, it will be our 4th major change to the design, which is seriously dampening team morale. I hope my supervisor will limit his requests for changes.

Well, saying is so much easier than done this means back to the drawing board and design processes again, not to mention the tedious CAD work thereafter. If only my team supervisor is more firm to stick to his decisions.

Going into our history of designs, our very 1st design months back goes about having twin looping rings like a gyroscope. Allowing a user seated in the center to rotate about 2 axis continuously, almost like the old disfunct SEGA R360 arcade machine, only better and more versatile. Our supervisor highlighted (ok reasonable at that time) space concerns for the twin loops and would like to cut the height by half. So I came up with a linear actuator type simulator with only 360 degrees rotation for the “roll” axis. Later do the team realize that our supervisor was against the 360 rotation idea from the start and suggested going for a more basic design, using actuators, which gave birth to the final design we came up till now.

Looks like we have to junk this new set of engineering drawings, dimensions for fabrication and orders for now.

Gearing up for school reopening, booth done

0

Popped by school today to meet up with my FYP teamamtes Khowming who was already there with other coursemates. Danson could not make it today due to some last minute issue on his part. Part of today’s plan was to get our 2nd signage board up (which will be used for illustrative purposes at our display booth), together with doing some housekeeping to spruce up and PC and set it up in a more conducive manner.

singapore poly fyp radicurl 001

High on the agenda was to meet up with our supervisor on finally finalising our design plans so we can actually get about ordering our parts, but that was put back as my supervisor was not in office today. But our project room TSO was around and has always been a very helpful person making setting our booth up, the team simply adores our TSO. As he always said “We treat each other like family”. So things done all around in the design center are based on trust and responsibility. Would be looking forward to working with him for the weeks to come.

Our display booth looks totally awesome now and we are ready to start work. It is the most funky around the design center at the moment. Man will it be impressive on the 1st day of school when everyones comes back to school. Not to mention a morale booster for my team as well!

Track Camp, BBQ and Polar RS400sd at House of Times

1

The track camp and BBQ is on last night, well specifically the BBQ as the camp already started since Thursday. The camp saw a reunion of some old seniors, together with Juniors. There was Lan gaming at SP Moberly Hub before training from 5pm at the track. The BBQ started around 7.30pm. Besides the usual crabsticks and sotong balls, there was usual hotdogs, big and small cocktail ones which we found out is rather manageable to BBQ. Few of us left round 11.30pm so that they could catch the last mode of public transport home.

Prior to all that, I touched school around late afternoon, before having to leave to orchard to meet a client who I come to know have his own badminton club in Pasir Ris!

Had a light soupy dinner at Orchard (as I was recovering from some sore throat boring me over the past few days), so I can do with with lesser of the heaty BBQ food later in the night.

Polar RS400sd Running Computer

Homework for my Polar RS400sd
Dropped by the House of Times at lucky plaza (since I was around the area) to check out the Polar RS400sd watch, apparently they are the only few authorized sellers and repairs centers for Polar watches in Singapore iteslf. Widely known for this store are also their rates which are usually lower than standard outside rates.

The RS400sd is retailing at $715 in most watch shops, have them retailing in House of Times at $704 basic. I asked the assistant about using the upcoming New Balance Realrun vouchers for a discount on the watch, and she (presumably one of the owners of the store as well) told me no need and she could offer the RS400sd at 15% on the spot if I wish (ask for it!) thus effectively brining the price to $600SGD

So calculating, I can get the RS400sd at $369.90USD from amazon (buying from US is always thought to be cheaper), so that’s $555 excluding shipping and GST. Including GST and it will be way above $600. With this together with possible warranty issues if I purchase from overseas, it seems that all my previous homework about buying overseas are redundant now given the lover local rates.

I approached my Friend at the BBQ on the issue who told me that we can actually use Coach’s coach card to get discount for Polar watches, let be the regular lobangs for bulk order with Running Lab stores, having discounts rumored round 40% off. But whether that are for old stocks I still yet to confirm. It just makes me wonder should I commit the RS400sd now or wait.

Happy Birthday Mum!

0

Today is my mum’s 50th birthday and it will be celebrated in 3 phases, namely a home celebration tonight, giant buffet dinner at Goodwood Hotel and next weekend another family dinner at our favorite eatery joint, YMCA metropolitan t Stevens road.

It was like secret ops during this evening: Brought her blueberry cake with dad while she’s out for her Japanese language course, while Sheena prepared her birthday card at home. We all welcomed her home with a candle lit cake! Though it was little breezy at that time and 2 of the 5 candles were blown off, but that didn’t dampened the spirit as it was all relighted. My mum is not the kind where you need to buy her outrageous bling bling or fabulous jewelery to impress her, I guess my last semester results is more than enough for her birthday present on my side lol!

Happy 50th Birthday Mum!

Coincidentally, today is also Radio 913 birthday as well, and the party’s held at St James tonight.

Semester 5 Results

My fifth semester results are out! Finally! a perfect score for this semester after failing to always hit the “prefect kill” mark for the last 2 semesters. This semester saw a pristine “Mon-mon-mon-monster kill” with 8 ‘DIST’ out of the 8 Modules taken and ‘A’ for IS module (Internship) in which the ‘A’ grade is the most students can get.

Yupyup so it’s a wicked sick wipe and whats’s more it’s my last academic semester too- with Final Year Projects fulltime next Semester, farewell to E-learning, Mid and End Semester Exams in Poly for now! Your all busted good, for now. Alta Vista Baby!
