Tiong Bahru Park Running Route

Tiong Bahru Park Running Route
Tiong Bahru Park had been around for a long time even with it’s previous face-lift and the introduction of Gan Eng Seng Secondary next door, taking a large chunk of it’s old land area and introducing a dedicated soccer field. The place started off as left over land from a sewage plant only to converted into a dedicated park a long time back. If you live in the southern city area, you definitely won’t give this little park a miss, being the only one real park connecting the centrals and filling in for residents of Prince Charles Road, Redhill, Delta and of course Tiong Bahru itself.

Route & Terrain (1.2km external park route)
The “new” Tiong Bahru Park has a rather simple idiot-proof layout, with a prominent perimeter loop span both ends of the park.

Tiong Bahru Park Standard 730m Loop
If you want to make of the longest distance in this small urban park, run the perimeter which will give you close to 730m in the standard loop (White Line).

Here in this series I will share my favorite running route in the Central and Southern Singapore. With these few more in the series:

  • Sunset Way
  • Alexandra Park Connector
  • Tiong Bahru Park
  • Mount Faber Hill
  • Macritchie Nature Reserve

Labrador Park
Situated in the confines and tucked behind hills and light industries, this running route brings you the sights and sounds of our country’s past together with rather breath-taking views. The place is not exactly accessible. If you were to drive there, it’s just a stone throw away from Pasir Panjang with ample public parking spaces upon reaching the sea walk park car area. If you are to commute there, you can get off from round Pasir Panjang NOL building and make your way towards the hills with a 15min walk before reaching the park itself.

Sheares Bridge Run 2007 Thoughts

5
Army Half Marathon 2007 Skyline

 Done with the main report, here is the more personal report: Looking back on the half-marathon today my target timing was a sub 2hour which I barely hit which a gun time of about 2hours 8mins so the nett time will be below 1hour 55mins. The run felt strange today namely hitting a fatigue wall prematurely than what I would normally do.

Did very light stretching before running and my muscles still felt tight throughout the run till the 12km mark where I finally “burnt-in” on the warm up and sped up the pace. But that didn’t lasted for long though – I slowed down drastically to a jog from 17km onwards and it’s difficult to pick the pace up from there – Doesn’t sound too good for my year end marathon.

I remembered able to pull up all my half-marathons with an ending sprint but I simply could not do it today. I believe I can largely deduce that being primarily attributed to my lack of long runs prior to the event- I had not ran regularly for about a month since my exams started and ended just last Friday. Besides not being in condition, I didn’t get much sleep at the stay over last night. Interestingly, nobody at the sleepover seems to have slept well either, but getting a cab for our cab convoy at 4am didn’t prove much of a feat either.

The weather was clear and fair where most were expecting rain. Nevertheless the heat round the finish saw a large number of people suffering cramps at the end point. There was one instance where this army boy who got stuck and almost fell back after getting cramps on both of his legs when climbing a flight of stairs at the spectator stand. Lucky Darius was there to catch him and provide aid too, so we were pretty much like “medics” in singlets for a period of time there.

The carnival below the spectator stand was too crowded to comfort. Even cooling down stretches on the ground proved to be a feat as anyone could simply just trip over you without notice. There was a casualty in this year’s race, a runner collapsed after finishing his 21km, it goes to say even if it goes in contradiction to motivation techniques and pushing one-self to finish a race, always have a place to listen to your body when you least expect it. You can push on in another race some other day, don’t take chances with life at stake.

Just like every year, registered for the Swissotel Vertical Marathon on the spot at the event booths (beats mailing or faxing entries in), met Ahlong there too who also registered for the event.

Dropped by to Marina Food court for lunch with the track gang where Elrick came by too in his shouty Commando’s Attire and his stories of his 8 day field camp last week (which rained everyday). Window shopped around the area before heading home for rest thereafter.

Last but not least, cheers to ChenLing and gang who completed their maiden half-marathon around 3Hours, you are all winners – finishers

It tough being a SBS transit bus driver these days

0

Looking into the limelight of the events happening recently with regards to SBS transit bus drivers, don’t you think SBS transit is acting too harsh on bus captains now?

Taking the incident this year of the Indian elderly lady who fell from a bus which simply drove off, only laughingly being treated by a driver from a competitor bus company who attended to the large gash on her head which actually revealed her skull under the cut. The indian lady didn’t take much offense on the event, well not as much as SBS transit decision to fire that bus captain who left her.

SBS transit was quoted as “being intolerable” towards such acts and would send off any driver who fails to meet the expectations of the company.

With the exception of yesterday’s article in Straits Times of the school boy being run over. These are considerably minor incidents which should not cost drivers their job.

SBS Transit Volvo B9TL Rear Right

Bus captains are not exactly one who earns alot from work, having a stereotypical background of a low income group. Do you think SBS transit policies will adversely affect the drivers job security and morale? If I were in their shoes, it would be miserable working day by day knowing that the very people who you have to ferry day by day have a higher chance of only shower complaints down your back, besides also being ultimately the ones who will cost you your job with you mess up. And it’s just that one mistake.

Sure there are other jobs which demands more than this. But in the public eye, this is eminent. Consequences of a service orientated job nature? Well its commendable that SBS takes pride in their drivers being professional employees with clean records, contrary to the Drivers of the olden days but there is also to be a fine line defining whats tolerable and not, it’s not just one “goof” and you are gone.

SBS Transit Volvo B9TL Interior

These really got me thinking and shed new light onto how I further precieve bus drivers too. I mean knowing their story, I am one who on a normal occasion will thank the bus driver who stops the bus when they see me running after it, maybe all it take is a smile to make a person’s day easing much their work stresses. Not to mention giving thumbs up to a handful of drivers I know who greet their commuters daily when they board the bus (while most Singaporeans would just stare or never even bother to raise a brow when greeted).

Ultimately it’s the demands of the commuters who paints much of the situation now, let be the standards set forward in the light of tourism. Love it or hate it, it’s simply our mainstream societal pampered and typical stuck-up nature, we are living in the consequences of our actions – a self-imploding crisis of our demands.

Post 2007 Sheares Bridge Run AHM Report

5
Army Half Marathon 2007 Finish

Congratulation to all those who ran and completed he Sheares Bridge Run, Army Half Marathon today. The run is rather enjoyable this year despite challenges with a new venue for the organizing committee, with that I will touch on the various aspects of the race in order:

Pre-Race & Admin
Getting there was not much of a problem due to it’s centralised location. The roads only close from 5am onward but that shouldn’t post much of a problem as most would arrive earlier than that, allowing transports to drop runners as close to the venue. The place was clearly marked with lots of signage which made finding key locations such as baggage deposit and toilet a breeze without much assistance, though the staff there were rather helpful when approached as well.

Baggage deposit was a breeze, though I guess they weren’t quite experienced being army boys volunteers. They even wanted to cable tie my tag with was already masking taped to my bag! Toilet facilities are ample and adequate all with proper water and tissue supplies as well.

There were 100-plus and plain water points lined from the floating platform to the start point, offering runners the luxury of pre-race hydration which came very much a welcome.

The Run Race Route
They opened more lanes on the route this year, with majority of the lanes/fully closed for running. Commendably is the allocation of 1 lane for traffic on the Sheares bridge (contrary to one lane for runners last year) making not only running more spacious, open and enjoyable but allow breezy overtaking as well. There were few bottlenecks upon approaching east coast park where everyone have to squeeze to run on the concrete pavement and the U-turn point prior to the chip scanning area.

Most of the running route was flat and I believe no runners have to put up with pesky traffic lights like last year, giving runners a smooth uninterrupted run. Notable water points have to be the “pirates” of CSS and their spray mist stations, very good indeed, few of the water points which kept the supply of 100-plus at the end.

I believe many mistakened the 6km end point for the 21km end point and sped up until being greeted by a left turn flanked by 21km directional arrow signage. Once running to the front of the floating platform there were also 2 gantries in sight, the organisers should only have one up or at least put the official gun timer on the end point gantry to distinguish and not only to find out that you’ve ended when you see the end point championship mat.

Army Half Marathon 2007 Sheares Bridge and SG Flyer

Post Race
Noticeably is the floating platform being out of bounds to the public due the wakeboarding champion even going on. But I just felt that the floating platform and spectator stand, though spacious was not adequate for the crowds which are expected to assemble there. Around 9am onward the place is all lined with queues snaking everywhere for baggage collection, whats more the end point and holding pens of the half marathon is rather small cramped and confined. I caught a glimpse of a person being evacuated in a stretcher by medics and they were having a hard time getting through the crowds who also have no other way to disperse, being held in the pen. The organizers should devote a large open space for runners to site down and do their cool down stretches as well.

There were plenty of ice cold 100-plus left after the race, except for those I heard who finished sub 3hours, there were none left.

Toilets are still sustainable even after the race, the only bad are the users themselves, the toilets are all soiled after the race, many with shoe foot prints on the toilet seats.

Unheard were the goodie bag collection which turns out to be a plastic bag containing few tidbits, a writing pad and some flyers/vouchers being distributed randomly to anyone who comes by.

Baggage Collection
Looks like the organisers really learnt from the rather efficient baggage collection technique from last year, employing the similar compartment styled sorting of bags, but not quite as effective though.

The “deposit points” suddenly turned into “collection points” with paper pasted over the number allocation signage. Many runners could not tell whether the queue they were queuing for is the same one they deposited until trying to make out the numbers or recall the booth.

My bag took 12 mins to arrive after providing them my bib number. 12mins is not exactly long but neither too short for comfort either. Commendable are the army boys who after saw a group of us waiting for longer than usual, resent the our bag numbers in a priority queue (labeled interestingly with 3 exclamation marks!!! behind out tag number). At least I can see the effort played on their part, I seriously see those working behind the camo nets the weak link in the baggage process, they just take too long to find the required bags- not seen by public can slack ah recruit?

For those who completed before 8am, baggage collection will be much of a breeze, but you won’t agree to it if you’ve collected your bag from 9am onwards- with queues snaking all round the area, heard some even waited 45mins for their bags. Unacceptable.

Once again these all added to the congestion within the carnival area, it’s simply discourages waking around the area. I still prefer the open air carnival atmosphere of the Padang.

Sheares Bridge Run AHM 2007 – Overall Rating:
7.5/10

Not a bad event overall. Especially taking in consideration space restrictions and the first time organising in a new environment. Could actually score better for an excellent route and water point support, but seriously let down by the baggage collection, lack of space and uncondusive ending carnival area.

Last but not least, sincere condolences going to the army CPT Ho Si Qiu (25 years old army regular). Who passed away after collapsing upon finishing his race today.

Exams are Over!

4

Well it’s a few days of well deserved rest before, whats more, got my Desktop PC fixed up and running to full capacity yesterday.

My last paper ended yesterday too, which opened up a whole new world of.. well chores! Yea lots of them, it looks like I am much more busy than usual even after the exams, only thing that getting things done are much more flexible now rather than studying.

Oh yes, the Sheares Bridge Run would be on tomorrow morning. Would be camping out at Chenling’s home with the rest of the gang overnight, before heading to the esplanade in a convoy tomorrow. But first, it’s a dinner carbo loading session somewhere round paya lebar. Hope the whether will be fine tomorrow! Wish us luck!

One More Paper to Go!

0

The day is finally here, 2 weeks of back-to-back studying torturing studying, it’s 2 more days to my final paper this Friday! the 24th August! For this exam to date, I’ve done almost 23 past year papers for revision and used up more than twice as much lecture pads I get from a normal semester for all that and my tutorials done (hehhehheh). Something tells me this semester is as tough as it gets. Everybody all round me are all panda-eyed and sickly now and I think I am not the only one losing it haha.

Zippy Gigabyte Swaps

After one month of inactivity, I guess it’s time to bring my desktop PC back to life. Got about backup all my files on my desktop before formatting. It’s not everyday where I get 1TB of hard disks sitting on my desk zipping hundred GB of files here and there. Otherwise, I am starting to think that SATA and USB 2.0 is really really slow, it’s almost one whole afternoon and I had not even got all my files transferred. Should be getting my old dusty Windows disc to install again, just hope it activates without having a need to call Microsoft or I will seriously be screwing them over the phone again.

Come to think about it, had been sometime since I ran though. It would be AHM/Sheares Bridge run to look forward too this Sunday, would be staying over with ChenLing and gang before heading there in a cab convoy Sunday.

Run For Hope 2007

0

Run for Hope 2007 is inspired by the courageous story of Terry Fox, a Canadian teenager, who despite an amputated leg due to bone cancer, ran a ‘marathon of hope’ across Canada to raise funds for cancer research, so that one day a cure could be found. Terry ran an equivalent of one entire marathon a day (42 km) for 143 days.

When he was a little more than half way across the country, he was forced to stop running because cancer had spread to the rest of his body. Terry Fox passed away in 1981, at the age of 22.

We will not stop until a cure for all cancers have been found. Join us on this fun filled day to raise awareness and funds for Singapore Cancer Research.

RUN FOR HOPE 2007 is a great way to keep fit and healthy or a good excuse for a day out at the beach. Make it an occasion for company team building, family bonding or just simply fun with friends. Bring family, friends, sports and business colleagues and JOIN IN THE RUN!!

Test your skill with the 8 KM Competitive Race or join the 4 KM Fun Run where you can walk, ride a wheelchair, or push the pram – all for a good cause.
