New upcoming 2nd generation revised Nokia N95 (Nokia N95i, N95 US)

35
Revised N95i SDHC support

Here are some heads up and it’s official on the new revised N95, primarily made for the US market it’s still called the N95 aka N95 US (and not the N95i nor the N95 music edition). There is no telling how Nokia will rebrand it here in Asia, but for identification stakes I will call it the “i” version and man do the specs look convincing.

Nokia N95 US Edition (aka N95i)
Nokia really listened to users this time addressing the battery issue head on with a new improved high capacity 1200mAh battery in the same compact phone size & dimensions. There is confirmed 8GB SDHC support tested with Sandisk 8GB SDHC (which should largely compatible with most other major SDHC brands too).

Moreover, besides firmware and miscellaneous cosmetic improvements to improve usablity the internal RAM had also been doubled to 128MB. For those often giving your phone the “spins” the lens and cover switch does not protrude out of the body now and sits flushed inside the phone’s body. In summary, here are the following improvements we have:

  • New redesigned body with bigger battery compartment (internal)
  • 128MB RAM (From 64MB)
  • 2.6″ screen to brighter 2.8″ screen at the same 320×240 resolution
  • 1200 mAh Nokia BL-6F Battery (from 950mAh)
  • New weight ~ 125g (5g more than old N95)
  • Available in Black-graphite (back plate only)
  • Camera lens now flushed (sunken) inside body
  • Manual camera slide lenscover removed
  • Repostioned glass flash at center
  • Music keys are now padded

*Note these are the only listed changes, specs not mentioned are left the same (i.e 5MP camera, SiFR Star III GPS, etc).

There is still word on whether the screen is bigger or spot a higher resolution, but frankly, that is the least the N95 needs in terms of an upgrade- a larger screen with more pixels means a larger battery drain and it defeats the purpose of the larger capacity battery if battery life is already a concern for many.

The phone will still come bundled with a 1GB MicroSD in the box (which I believe you will be junking for a higher cap anyway). For those who currently own the N95, nope you cannot use the new high capacity battery as it’s thicker and won’t fit the old N95 (see above picture with the new N95 on the left and old on the right). Expect the old N95 prices to tumble the moment this baby comes out year end before Christmas and this new baby will take the pole position as Nokia’s Flagship phone.

Nokia N95 8GB Edition (aka Black Music Edition)
It’s official, there is actually (believe or not) another 8GB version of the N95 coming out, so shown by FFC reports with real pictures to brag. So apparently the old rumors were actually true.

The N95 8GB edition will be available in black and is a successor to the N91 8GB music phone. Though running on 8GB flash memory, the only drawback is that there is NO MicroSD expansion slot in this edition of the N95.

In place will be Nokia’s large data management application. The camera will be similar to that of the N95 US (as shown above) with the same 5MP carl zeiss optics but flash repositioned to the center with the sunken lens. The 8GB music edition will also spot the new larger battery cover (and larger battery as well). Best of all, it’s available all in Black! It looks simply stunning with the blue LEDs lighting.

2007/2008 Semester Exams: 2 papers down 4 more to go!

A typical day in SP

Well the weekend is finally approaching and finally found some time to rest from all the exam madness. Today marks the mid way point of my modules cleared with a line of 3 papers/day coming up in a row come Monday. For the record, I guess I can hold up with a minimum A grade for all my completed modules to date, but I guess it’s just or no where close to a distinction in the cohort I guess.

After going through the exam questions and comparing answers after the papers, I managed to pull through my Mechanics III module at 100%, but slipping at Quality Management and Thursday’s Fluid Mechanics modules at around 90 marks due to ever-so-irritating careless mistakes. Hope that that will be a learning experience for future papers.

Funny thing that I could not sleep well the night before. Could it be due to sleeping immediately after studying where my mind is not relaxed or just that my body clock is not used to sleeping early for the next morning paper during this self study period. Man felt that I could be more awake for today’s paper.

On the sidetrack, the Student Alumni Association had been sending alot of scholarship related mails lately, namely for school-paid scholarship exhibitions, preparation workshop and talks. But I guess that all came at a bad time smacked right in between papers during this exam period. A bad on the timeline side I guess. A scholarship sounds nice, but I personally do not like being tied down my bonds or strings pressuring me to always be the best, it’s simply stressful. I like the freedom, but of course no one’s gonna offer money for free right?

Lastly, cheers to Sugih my old secondary school classmate who popped by SG for a visit, didn’t manage to join the reunion dinner with the rest of the gang last monday night at Vivo due to a paper on tuesday. It’s always the same when we are out of school, either working, studying or commitments, it’s difficult for everyone to get together for reunion class outings now let be primary, secondary & JC mates, especially when you want to but can’t.

BMW z10 Supercar

1
BMW M1

Back in 1979, BMW had their last mid-engined supercar the M1 which not really saw the light in of mass production, price and having to pry the designs off Lamborghini who was faced with bankruptcy then. The M1 was also the first car produced by BMW M Division, aka the blue red and purple stripped Motorsports people who, brought the world their souped up roadsters, coupes and super saloons which we all come accustomised too, such as the z4-M M3, M5 & M6.

We don’t really know what the rocket scientists in the M division would be brewing out next, but if you wish and if cash is not a problem for you, then can actually place a deposit with BMW, bypassing the hassles of middle man dealers or “performance motors ” for one of the most-sought after mainstream supercars come 2008, standing side-by-side with the F430 and the Gallardo, the BMW Z10.

BMW z10 2008 Supercar

The Z10 will be a mid-engine supercar powered by a 5.0L V10 found similarly in the M5 and M6. Only that it would be likely to be tuned up coughing out 550hp with a a power to weight ratio of 458bhp/tonne, given the expected curb weight of about 1.2 tons. In comparison, it’s M1 predecessor had a minute 3.5L inline 6 with 24 valves chruning out 277bhp & 324Nm of torque @ 6500rpm.

It’s a mixed bag when it comes to BMW’s controversial styling, which tested loyalists and fans with the sedans of 2005. Personally I see the Z10 more like a Gallardo Spyder with it’s front chopped out with 2 kidneys and badging in place.

Look closely and you may hey! even recognize it’s blood parents: say… a cross between a Porsche Carrera GT mistress too? But like it or hate it, the z10 is still simply astonishing and a beauty to look at.

BMW z10 2008 Supercar

I guess BMW can have plenty to brag about the Z10 come next year. With the exception of Porsche strangely going towards sedans and more SUVs next year, I believe one of the reasons of the Z10 is the increased pressure on BMW to produce a mid-engine car given increasing competition from VW’s “Veyron” and Audi’s R8.

Furthermore backed by demands from fans to produce a true bred supercar in line with BMW’s relatively long experience in Formula 1, it’s about time BMW came out with a mid-engine car to live in the light (or cover up the failure) the M1 always had till today, only time will tell.

Semester Exams Ahoy Captain!

4

I guess my PC choose a good time to conk out few weeks prior my exam date, but given that hey I have more time to study and away from games. My exam schedule is not exactly the best there is, but I guess I had sufficient time to prepare for all of them – heading and plunging into them for the past weeks and now just some refresher and doing some past-year papers in preparation (familiarisation) to the exams style and setting for the actual paper itself.. or am I just being complacent?

  • 14th Aug Tuesday – Mechanics III
  • 16th Aug Thursday – Fluid Mechanics
  • 20th Aug Monday – Statistics
  • 21th Aug Tuesday – Engineering Thermodynamics
  • 22th Aug Wednesday – Industrial Automation
  • 24th Aug Friday – Organisation Managment

Noticeably, the most demanding period will be the 20th-22th stretch of August where I would see a turkey of 3 papers in a row, with only the weekend prior to prepare. You can also say I do not have much of a national day holiday this year too. Too bad for me for having to give SingFest at Fortcanning and the Nuffnang Rush Hour 3 Movie Screening Party a miss last week, and now EPL is here. It all just came at a time I least wanted them to be, haiz. But at least I won’t be studying over new year’s day like last year.

And ahh yes and running is good during the exam period, not only keeps you energetic and awake, it makes you sleep better at night. In other words for exams, you will not only need a head full of exam-related yogurt but a clean running engine without clogged oil or coolant as well.

Did a run today, amazingly, the rain held on and poured immediately when I completed my run and stepped into my home, wow thanks weather!

Running Mileage for the weeks:
Redhill/Tanglin Canal Route: 15km – Last Monday
Redhill/Tanglin Canal Route: 15km – Sunday
Total Mileage for week: 30km

Some Quad-Core PC talk and Vista 32-bit over 64-bit

2

True that 45nm processors processors will be out in a few months and I definitely know that I will want it, but as in the PC line there will always be something better down the road. And if you are to wait for “that something to come” it will be replaced in a matter of time too. What’s more with Intel price cuts to current processors, current Intel 65nm processors are going dirt cheap now- my targeted Quad core Q6600 with Asus 5PB motherboard going for $715 contrary to $1400 few months ago. With prices dropping further everyday (and Comdex end of this month) I could see my new system being built with the following upgrade hardly over $1500 for hardware:

  • Intel Quad Core Q6600 + Asus P5B Premium Mobo
  • Geforce 8800GTS 320MB
  • 4GB Patriot Ram (4x1GB)
  • Additonal 500GB Hitachi SATA Harddisk (Bringing to 1TB in total)
  • Logitech G9 Laser Mouse

That should be more than enough for Quake wars, Unreal Tournament III and Starcraft II. The only thing I worry now is whether my Antec Truepower 480W can support the wattage for QuadCore Systems.

OS-wise I will be opt-ing for Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit with service pack one when it comes out very soon, contrary to the 64-bit I shortlisted before. Theoretically, 64-bit is better technologically, not only bit-wise, but after some research I believe that the effective lifespan of Vista won’t see the light of 64-bit being even implemented so soon. Furthermore with the given the problems of drivers signing, etc. For 64-bit, the safe bet will be the successor of Vista itself which we will see in about 5+ years time (where my next hardware upgrade will also be scheduled).

CSE Mock Networking Session, Exam Study Week, NAPFA Crumpler pouch

0
CSE Module Cocktail Network Party

Saw myself in school today again during the study week. The highlight of the day was the networking session at the tulip room in the staff center where we a a mock up networking cocktail session between us and classmates from another. It’s kinda odd talking to your very own classmates where we have to “pretend” that we are “potential business clients” and have not met each other- having to introduce each other and exchange name cards, rather amusing I say.

Interestingly was the myriad of homemade name cards, from bundle jet printed to hand written pieces of A4 paper stuck together to professional glossy coated ones. We had a reception and finger foods. The party ended with a success, all went well and our teacher and the director even congratulated us for a job well done.

SP Free Napfa Crumpler Pouch

Before the networking session, collected my NAPFA Gold award- a spunky new thirsty AL crumpler pouch, rather niffy I say and definitely a commodity item to receive on top of your NAPFA award.

Consultation was the secondary thing I did the moment I set foot in school today. Met up with my Mechanics and Industrial Automation tutors for questions over the past year papers. Managed to clear doubts for these 2 modules for now.

Come to think of it. it’s tough balancing work and free time, sometimes I just wonder if I push myself too hard can I actually make it pass the 6 gruesome papers the semester exams will throw at me, especially with so many people falling sick these days. I guess I have the regular jogging runs and vitamin C from juices to keep me sane during this hard period all with a pinch of cooling cheng tung of course.

And for the record, this semester exam next week would also be my last semester exam in SP, love it or hate it I will definitely want it over first but then it would be my last too, haha.

Happy 42th Birthday Singapore!

4
Ndp 07 Fireworks

Happy 42nd Birthday Singapore. Well, the National Day parade had just ended and it marks the seal of the first city bay area NDP for the nation’s 42nd birthday.

Also it had been 10 years since I’ve actually watched NDP live and contributed as a performer as well. With that in hand I know the time and commitment one needs to have to contribute for the NDP, especially having to start rehearsal as early as January every week. Besides the rather abrupt and mini hardware showcase by the air force and army, the year’s parade this year is considerably smaller given the smaller stage area. However, given that, performances this year are largely dampened and not as spectacular as what as I know was before.

It was agonizing watching the NDP parade on TV hoping that the performers don’t screw up on screen otherwise painting a bad impression on our events and knowing that the world’s watching too. Besides giving the primary school kids credit for their rather messy performance, they also do not look enthusiastic to perform at all. Our singers are all largely constipated, not to mention the Soka association with their super un-synchronized moves (I wonder why are they even qualified to perform). Other than that, other performances are excellent, I feel that with the exception of those I mentioned, they are actually the ones which really let all the previous NDPs down. And seriously, they should bring back more of the old NDP which we all grow up hearing during the 90s era. If you watch the parade as a whole you will enjoy the overall experience but frankly with these little details in place, the performance was a disaster.

At least the fireworks were decent it looked as good on TV as viewed from my home, I guess the thing which really made this year’s performance a memorable one is the new setting and environment with a potential large viewing audience, otherwise I guess the bay area would be better off for Formula 1 and the upcoming Sheares Bridge/Singapore Bay Run.

StarCraft 2 multiplayer gameplay demonstration video at BlizzCon 2007

Starcraft 2 Hyperion Bridge (Campaign)

Here are some quick snippets of the BlizzCon 2007 held in Anaheim Convention Center in Los Angeles.

Few noticable annouvments include details on the new WOW expansion, World of Warcraft:Wrath of the Lich King with new large Ice worlds. Not to mention plans for a Warcraft Movie in the making (Computer Generated just like those in-game cinematics we all know of Blizzard).

Besides that the public have their questions answered by members of the different teams at Blizzard. At the World of Warcraft Items and Professions panel, the development team discussed their plans for the Inscription profession, on top of Starcraft 2, and DID we mention Starcraft 2 again? this time yes with another indepth walkthrough of orgasmic gameplay which I believe is worth more than the 10mins it can offer, more at the Play Button:

Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship 2007 Award Ceremony

0
Ngee Ann Study Scholarship 2007

The Ngee Ann Kongsi scholarship presentation was on today at the Teochew building along Tank Road. The ceremony saw almost close to 3/4 million dollars worth of scholarship and bursary awards given unconditionally in line with the Ngee Ann’s long-time stand towards rewarding and helping deserving Teochew students for academic performance and excellence. Concurrently, there was a Clay art exhibition at the ground floor of the building, which kept my parents (who were there to support the event as well) amazed.

No doubt you will definitely marvel that the Ngee Ann Kongsi is a rather wealthy organisation. Owning not only various properties all round Overseas and Singapore, including the whole plot at Orchard spanning from Wisma Atria, Ngee Ann City, Meritus Mandarin to Cineleisure Orchard. Commendably, being a non-profit organisation, 80% of their earnings are donated in benefit of charitable and educational means.

Coincidentally met up with some of my army troopers who were award recipients as well. Kumwah was there and so was David, who is currently on a bursary in NUS. Caught up on times and unit stuffs during the Hi-tea reception, those were the old days.

It’s not everyday where you receive an award like this, looking at the laminated Scholarship certificate hand-signed by the Ngee Ann Kongsi President and Education Chairman himself, this scholarship, beside being a valued item in my portfolio, will definately be the driving force for further excellence.

Radio Talk, Rod Monteiro’s ‘Good Service’ segment in Radio 91.3FM

5

I remembered going out for run few month ago always listening to my “favourite” radio station Class 95FM, well so as it was. I don’t know why it’s labelled ‘Singapore’s favourite English radio station’ but I just always felt that something was missing in the shows they have. Then it finally struck me “why am I always toturing myself listening to ads?” I didn’t come to realise it then till I actually counted the number of songs played within the peak hour 6-7pm show- the time which I usually do my evening Tanglin runs as well. On average only 4 songs are played in the one hour block, the rest of it was news, traffic reports, endless DJ chatting and of course Ads- lots and lots of them chain to chain, back to back.

The Married Man show Rod Monteiro & Suzanne from 91.3FM

I guess I regularly “outgrow” radio stations, 98.7FM was one of my favourite stations during my teen years, till like Jamie and Sheikh Haikel spoiled it (with some DJs fired in the process). Jeremy Ratnam was one of the few professional original DJs I respected in Power 98FM, so is my all time favorite and funnyman Rod’ Montero from Class95. The interesting thing is that they’ve left all their previous stations and one by one they are all in 91.3FM now!

I always labelled 91.3FM as a good source of trance/house music, which they primarily catered for when they came into the scene as a newbie not many years ago, but things are definitely looking really bright for the SPH Works Radio station. Pity MediaCorp Radio never saw the light into listening to their listeners as much as their advertisers.

91.3FM is the way to go now- With their guarantee: “No more than 2 ads in a row” and they really mean it! What’s more SMS dedications are FREE too! After listening to few of their shows, the fusion of the few best DJs in Singapore in this very promising station will see the funny fusion of certain shows “kaputted” from their previous stations into their current show, namely Rod’s Good Service’ segment and even the regular funny caller Raju is on 91.3FM as well too. It’s interesting to hear the rather abrupt pause sometimes the newly transplanted DJs have when they say the station names “always on 95ummm 91.3FM!”

91.3FM yea man, my new favorite station!

Lose some, Win some, NAPFA Gold

4

There was like 3 written tests this week for me, namely Communication skills for entrepreneurs (CSE) final test which I personally won’t be able to hit good 90+ marks for misreading the last question of the test. Mechanics III test was screwy too with some mistake(s) easily setting me to 70% total score, which contributes to 4% in the overal module score. Then to make matters worst, my Quality Control Module test is easily capped at 91/100 for a calculation error and more question mis-reads! (lesson learnt *shakes head*)

Dang so much for trying for Distinctions. This semester is exceptionally short, I seriously cannot emphasise that further with 6 semester exam papers to come in less than 2 weeks time. Last few semesters easily see a 2 week break after the last academic week for revisions, but this time it’s after the last week- BOOM exams!

So much for cutting the semesters shorter to cater for the intake in like wit the GCE “O” level exams. I personally think Though it’s still possible to get an A for these modules which is the barest minimum I should get, it’s these little bits and pieces of marks lost which makes the difference of a distinction.

SAS NAPFA Gold!

Nevertheless the week ended with a bang with my project group being the first in the class to submit topping it over the rest and possiblity securing good project grades in the process.

My NAPFA test was today as well, cleared my weakest station – Standing board jump with a reasonabel 231cm, not only painting the fact that you can actually train for SBJ (especially techniques) but setting the rest of my Napfa up in the tempo and boost my morale.

Overall here are my results for today’s NAPFA at the Singapore Polytechnic stadium:

Pullups: 11reps (A- 5points)
Situps: 41reps (A- 5points)
Standing Board Jump: 231cm (C- 3points)
Sit & Reach: 54cm (A- 5points)
Shuttle Run: 9.8s (A- 5points)
2.4km Run/Walk: 10mins 14s (A- 5points)

Total: 28/30 Points
Award: GOLD
(Still need to work on my SBJ for that last 2 points)

Cheers to the track team (who were training there concurrently) for cheering me on for the 2.4km segment. The run was rather messy with at least 30 over runners running each time on the 400m track, making overtaking a chore and delaying timings significantly. The 1st lap start with me as 3rd behind 2 more guys leading the pack. I saw myself moving up to 2nd on the 2nd round and leading the race from the 3rd lap onwards, this made pacing rather tricky as all I have to do is to chase the next runner I lapped.

Nevertheless, finished the 2.4km pole position with 10:14 which is a 5 point A for my standard. SGrunners Tiwaz and ex-track Alec was there too for their “west side evening run-cum cheng-tung desserts later” run. “you sure you run like that? you can easily run 2mins faster right?” Tiwazz said, haha. Classmate Qiwen was taking the test there today as well, cheers on him attaining silver despite running up 4 blisters on his feet for running his 2.4km barefoot.

Lastly, congrats for Zixuan who managed to hit 10 pullups (from zero) in the period of hardly 2 months, remarkable!

Woot! crossed the 600km mark for recorded running mileage this year!

Running Mileage for the week
2.4km NAPFA: 2.4km (10:14) +400m cooldown – Thursday (No count)
Sunset Way Canal Cooldown Run: 5.33km – Thursday (MWC8)
Total Mileage for week: 5.33km
Total 2007 Accumulative Mileage: 600.15km
