Last Semester Paper, Benq-Siemens p51

1
Lessons, lessons

Wahhaah still have one paper to go on friday & already in holiday mood. Haiz haiz must restraint, RESTRAINT! Only few more days, put in the effort for the last Thermofluids II paper & whoa! Then the holiday anvil can come lose on me full time anytime.

Moreover, though I find the Thermofluids kinda dry & boring it’s our lecturer Mr Pawa which makes the lessons very interesting, if it’s not his open nature for exam consultation, its his astonishing relation of our dirt dry lecture notes to practical real-life aspects. Not to mention his professionalism in teaching, just such of the very few rare lecturer breeds I came across in my course of Mechanical study. Simply just motivates you to score & ‘A’ grade just not for yourself, but also for who your teacher is. *Locks self to room & devour more dual combustion & rankine cycle theory*

Gadget Talk
Nevertheless, almost put aside my quest for the perfect phone as there seem to be no puurfect phone around, even the Sony Ericsson P990i & Dopod 838 Pro don’t appeal to me, just when I thought I have to survive with a dinky Nokia 7250i for months to come, the BenQ-Siemens P51 came along:

Benq Siemens p51 phone
Benq Siemens p51 Side
Benq Siemens p51 Camera
The Benq-Siemens p51 specifications

  • GSM (850/900/1800/1900 mhz) & GPRS (No UTMS)
  • WM 5.0 OS Phone Edition (With AKU2 Push E-mail)
  • 2,83″ TFT QVGA display (240×320 pixels @ 65k colors)
  • 1.3MP camera with flash
  • 128mb RAM & 128 ROM
  • QWERTY- Keyboard
  • GPS-module SiRF Star III
  • FM Radio (Unheard, but stated on offical website)
  • Bluetooth (Version not stated yet)
  • Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g), Bluetooth & USB
  • 2.5mm Audio Jack (yea!)
  • Full Sized SDIO/MMC card slot (yea!)
  • SMS, MMS & E-mail
  • USB Sync & Charging
  • Li-Ion battery with 1370 ma/h capacity
  • 240 minutes (4hrs) talk time
  • 150 hours stand by
  • 122х60х20 mm
  • 170 grams

It seems to have everything I need, well for at least about 2 years ahead. Till it starts giving the usual glitches & battery wear. Till then, I don’t really need 3G UTMS as firstly its too expensive, secondly it’s a battery drain & thirdly even if I have one, who am I gonna video call? Almost anyone I know who own 3G phones presently still run their 2.5G SIM cards internal & amazingly it’s a norm here in Singapore. Even those with 3G sims hardly use UTMS & definitely they won’t wanna run unnecessary 3G video calls either.

Camera-wise, since I use my phone camera mainly for web-based photoblogging for the site, 1.3MP is more than enough for me, though 2MP is the norm now. In fact I will most probably see myself shooting Max quality VGA (640×480) most of the time.

The 2.5mm stereo jack problem could be easily settled with an adapter for 3.5mm headphones, which can be found in many SimLim audio shops & its beats attaching an adapter found in many phones extending the device length by inches at ago. Otherwise, the FM radio function is very much unconfirmed on various mobile review sites, except being briefly mentioned on the official site itself (which do not seem credible at this moment of time). The GPS function is definitely cool for driving & in my annual adventure races, not to mention having to carry only one device for photos, PDA & phone for trips (contrary to 2 devices I carry everyday now).

Full-sized SD slot allows me to use large capacity & cheaper 4GB cards for large GPS maps & music/videos. Just throw in USB host support to top it up & it can just hit the sweet spot just great. Expect it to cost around $800SGD & below it being a GSM quad-band only phone, so prices will definitely be lower.

New Balance Realrun 2006, AHM 2006

2

The Newbalance realrun was on yesterday (Bib no. MO1959). In the mist of all the sunburn we’ve got from the sea water, tanning oil & a good sunny weather. Now all red like overcooked lobster… Yea, but it was cool, literally…

Quote from alec’s blog: “….I am sunburnt = very very red…”
NBRR 06

This year’s crowd was smaller than last year’s (presumably because of Sheares Bridge run 2006 next week), with the opens crowd not even up to the gatecarpark entrance (the slope with cars parked leading to the merlion behind the start line), as opposed to last year’s crowd. But nevertheless a respectable crowd is still there which resulted in a very slow start. It took like 3.3mins after the horn to actually cross the start line! wah next time start in front lol. The start is where its packed the most especially the satellite circle & I was really delayed off my usual running pace at the 4km mark – too many people & very difficult to overtake. Nevertheless, I really appreciate water points, not for drinking but crowd control as everybody rush to the sides for water, there will always be a nice center clear path for me to speed up catch up with my pacing.

New Balance Realrun Sgrunners

Besides relying on pure power to overtake on uphills, the other overtaking spree is always at the sand part, which always seem to have an immediate mental effect on runners (I remembered seeing a runner immediately started walking the moment she touches the first grain of sand, like magic?). For me its my wildcard, generally, keep running & take small but constant strides & you can go quite fast on the loose sand. Strangely the sand part this year do not feel like 1.6km, maybe around 1.0-1.2km. Or maybe it just felt different due to a diversion of the usual route.

The trail part is still the same, fast shady dash to the finish with the all usual kids in the forest cheering ya on with distances left “too short” to be true.

Finished like 53:13.33, just 20 seconds faster than last year’s 53:36. But off way my aim of sub 50.. haiz.

Nevertheless a good run. 😎

Missed The Sgrunners event anniversary photo taking together with samuel & trackz when we went to take our barang barang… Dang should have informed TLR instead of reno or our absence.

Interesting events during the run:

Quote from brokenrunner:
“….i didn’t see any fainting ones. this shit-in-the-pants guy really made an impression. i didn’t see his face. but i can forever remember his back view…. brown in colour. …”

Yes, this year’s run seem to be rather ‘stinky’, mainly because of a runner who soiled his pants when running! You can detect his faint distinctive presence at many points around the run, but nothing can beat what brokie & me encountered at the siloso beach area, round the 7-8km mark:

A Chinese guy with white singlet top, commendably running at a relatively fast pace in that condition too, with brown stained stuff seeping though his white running top & some umm brown stuff dripping down his leg. You definitely can’t miss the sight, with the ever choking natural smell with always seem to be following you. Haha you can see a very large 5x3m gap behind him sia, very very funny. but still yucky… Which proved to be a very good motivational factor to overtake him & never let him OVERTAKE you again!

Interesting, interesting.

Post Race:
Hung out post race at siloso beach to chill out, played a little volleyball, despite being very rusty after one year from the sport. Otherwise there is frisbee. Heard the sgrunners are chlling out at tanjong beach, which is the other end of Sentosa, so didn’t join them in the end. Missed out on soccer & basket-football as I was too tried after the run to play. Nevertheless, the monkey’s ball game in the water proved to be one of the few group cohesive games, not to mention a not too physically demanding game for lazy bums like me.

Pohlong aka Alson came down midway during the day, who is ostracized most of the time. Haha, but the some of us did mentioned not being too hard on him as its just his nature haha, so as some get to know of him though his seemingly “open nature”. He actually wanted to chat, so found some time to have nice leisure talk with him at the end of the day where I got to know him better. Turns out hes like one of the few “fallen angels” as well, out of JC & into poly. Then we chatted about school & stuffs, with Yuan & Cockroach. Generally everyone judges a book by its cover, so don’t be too deceptive as it seems, he’s not that bad as it seems when you get to know him in person. Nevertheless he is still the only one with a free seat beside him on the crowded bus back.. 🙄

Oh yea, you can request a cert of the event through the online login page, which do not seem to be working either.

Mileage for the week (7 day period)
Sunset Way Canal Route 10km – Friday
New Balance RealRun, Sentosa 10km – Sunday
Total Mileage for week = 20.0km (67% of 30km/week target met)

Semester 3 Exams, Lock & Loaded, Rock & FIRE!

0

*chomps on apple muffin while typing this post* Man! Am I on the ball now, InterStella HyperDrive, Schedule On Track with NO Eminent possible Serailment, Beam me up Scotty, 3 Papers To Go!

 My first paper will be on tomorrow, starting with Engineering Maths II. Been looking forward to it as it would mark the end of another module & one step closer to the end of the exams. For me, it would be with the Newbalance Realrun 2006 to look forward to at the end of the week.. & maybe a nice relaxing chill at the Sentosa beach with the track team thereafter in the mist of all this exam heat. Just dun rain… When the holiday starts, it will be the start of a new set of interesting challenges & “chores”, till then, chill.

🙄 You may notice that my blog these days are not really photoblogs, as my handphone is still currently down. & it beats carrying my digicam around too. Thus the ever bitching about technology & gadgets in search of a replacement phone these days. Otherwise, (as many would have already did) you can call my home phone (which I never knew still exists). Ahhh the tranquility of being away & ignoring GSM… Just let me savour the quiet, peaceful moment before the uncontactable angry mobs come after me in a few weeks to come…

😐 Guess IVP caught me at a bad time this year. Firstly off with the semester exams smack right on weeks before the event, miscellanous commitments, marathon preparations (in mara mode now) & the possiblity of a light leg surgery during the september holidays. Interestingly, the doctor at TTSH had to postpone my appointment 2 times already, so inconvenient & inflexible schedules, hope they did not piss me off again when I am there or change my appointment again!

Nevertheless been training/running by myself despite missing offical track training, with the adsence of gym training. Anyway, heres my exam schedule:

  • 17th August, Thursday – Engineering Maths II (2-4pm)
  • 18th August, Friday – Mechanics II (9am-11am)
  • 25th August, Friday – Thermofluids II (9am-11am)

Things will start to be clear by this friday, with the unloading of Maths & Mechanics from my temporary L2 cached memory brain cells to accomodate packing over the next week for Thermofluids II, think 640KB would be enough for anyone, well so as Bill Gates said…

😎 Bwahhahaha all your ‘A’s are belong to me!

Millege for the last week (6th-12th August 7 day period)
15 rounds Tiong Bahru park, Thursday – 15km
SP Gym 3+1 Varied Weight Training + 5.1km threadmill – Friday
15 rounds Tiong Bahru park, Sunday – 15.2km
Total Millege for week = 35.1km (118% of 30km/week target met)

Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox T830

0
Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox T830

When I brought my first Siemens handphone more than 6 years ago, I’ve never turned away from that brand ever since & went on with my SX1 till now.

Then things started looking bleak when BenQ acquired them. As I never really like BenQ phones. I never thought I would see myself owning another Siemens. Till I almost forgot of the Fujitsu-Siemens brand of phones.

In the mist of searching for my next “purrrfect phone”, presenting the Fujitsu-Siemens T830. (Pictured on left, beside the HTC Hermes aka O2 XDA Trion aka Dopod 838 Pro on the right).

Maybe they could just make the keyboard more compact (like the blackberry/p990i or slider KB) to accommodate a full 2.7″ VGA 640×480 Screen (65k colours at least, 262k preferred), slap in HSPDA3.5G support & FM radio & it will just hit it right on the sweet spot.

Specifications:

  • Windows Mobile 5.0 OS
  • 240×240 Touchscreen
  • 2MP Primary Autofocus Camera
  • Video Call Secondary VGA Cam
  • GSM/UTMS 3G
  • Side JogDial
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b and 802.11g
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • Built in GPS Chip & Reciever
  • Hardware Qwerty Keyboard
  • Full Sized SD/SDIO/MMC slot
  • 3.5mm Audio Jack
  • 128MB ROM & 64MB RAM

One Fujitsu Siemens T830 review by solopalmari & another from mobinaute.com (with babelfish translation from french).

The greatest welcome for the T830 is the use of the standard full sized SD cards (over adapter format nightmares with miniSD or the horrific microSD cards) with its SDIO/SD/MMC slot & the presence of a 3.5mm Audio Jack with mini USB sync as standard.

The biggest reason pulling me back in the T830 is the 240×240 1:1 aspect screen. Though being a WM5.0-specific supported feature, it will the product’s main downfall – it WILL HAVE problems with most PPC programs designed for the QVGA 4:3 aspect screens, together with older WM2003 programs (either it won’t run or will have the bottom chopped off). Hopefully Fujitsu Siemens will release a successor to the already promising T830 with these such recommended changes I will cover next.

In summary, the dream phone most people would want at the moment is non-existent. Currently its only a bit here & there, so maybe da manufacturers can get back on the drawing board with these features AT LEAST:

  • Windows Mobile 5.0 OS (Phone Ed)
  • 400Mhz Processor (XScale 624Mhz preferred)
  • QVGA Touchscreen (VGA 640×480 preferred)
  • 2MP Primary Autofocus Camera
  • 0.3MP Secondary Video Cam
  • Quad-Band GSM/UTMS 3G/HSDPA
  • Side JogDial
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b & 802.11g
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • FM Radio w/built-in Antenna
  • IrDA (Optional)
  • Mini-USB sync/charging port with USB Host
  • Built in GPS Chip & Reciever
  • Hardware Qwerty Keyboard (Slideout prefered to maintain form)
  • Full Sized SD/SDIO/MMC slot – IMPORTANT!
  • Full sized 3.5mm Audio Jack – IMPORTANT!
  • 128MB ROM & 64MB RAM
  • 1350mah primary battery

Some features compliment another, like the full sized SD/MMC slots to go for loading in large maps for the GPS function, the 3.5mm jack acting as an antenna for the FM radio & a universal Mini-USB port for everything IO. Moreover, so it won’t be considered a downgrade (or upgrade) when I get a replacement for my current 624Mhz VGA Dell Axim x50v. If only my Dell had a slide out keyboard & phone functionality… Hope I find my puurrfect phone soon, da current replacement 7250i is simply killing me.

Other than that, theres the HTC Artemis & the AnexTEK SP310 smartphone, here & here.

Sony Ericsson P990i Vs Dopod 838 Pro (HTC Hermes)

22

Been researching quite abit on the close battle between the 2 powerhouse phones, the Sony Ericsson P990i & the Dopod 838 Pro (HTC Hermes aka O2 XDA Trion aka Qtek 9600 whatever the rebranding). Both costing at least $1000 & representing the motherload of current consumer technology. I am still on the deciding stage so do drop down any comments/recomendations if any.

Sony Ericsson P990i
Dopod 838 Pro (aka HTC Hermes)

More me, though it seems that the SE P990i seems to have the more cool factors & hardware functions, I am tending to lean more towards the Dopod side now, mainly because than I am a current Pocket PC user on a Dell Axim X50v, thus being more familar with the OS & able to run my favorite existing games, file explorers, notetakers & MP3 Players on it, futhermore SD cards are one of my most commonly used medias, & a MicroSD card can easily be compatible with all my full sized SD slot deviced with the adaptor, unlike MS Duo.

Here are the dissected advantages & disadvantages to consider:

P990i Advantages:

  • FM Radio
  • Friendlier User Interface
  • More in-box accessories (like desktop charger, etc)
  • Has all the possible ways to input text (KB, VKV, KP, Handwrite)
  • Allows Touch Typing via Numeric keypad
  • Seemingly better Camera (Cybershot Similar) Interface (Samples)
  • Autofocus Camera with Marco & Semi-Pro Functions
  • Looks, feels & uses more like a phone
  • Lighter in weight 150g
  • MS Duos Up to 8GB (4GB Max in market currently)
  • More solid, have Sony Ericsson reknowned quality build, class & feel
  • Has Cool removable Flip (Review)
  • Revised new Symbian UIQ3.0 OS
  • 262k Colour screen
  • Very cool full Backlighting for KB & Numeric Keys
  • Known better & reputable after sales & city repair service (SG side dependant)

P990i Disadvantages:

  • Larger volume 114x57x26mm dimensions
  • Shorter battery Life
  • Symbian OS UIQ3.0 don’t have much good expandable 3rd party software
  • Incompatible with older Symbian UIQ applications
  • Not the most user-friendly to install SIS/Jar Applications
  • PC Sync is not one of the best & convenient
  • Wi-fi up to Wireless-B (11Mps) Networks
  • Smaller screen at same res
  • Non-universal external media (MS Duo format mostly for Sony products only)
  • Slightly more expensive (about $100-$200 more than the Dopod)
  • No EDGE support
  • Records video with a QVGA 320×240 pixels resolution at 15FPS MAX
  • No 3.5mm audio Jack
  • Need adaptor for PC-sync, Music & no direct Mini-USB port charging
  • Stylus placed on left side?
  • Limited onboard games & software (what you get out of box is more or less what you have)
Dopod 838 Pro Advantages:

  • More familiar Windows 5.0 OS
  • Useful & discreet slide out keyboard
  • Smaller volume 113x58x22mm dimensions
  • Longer & Bigger battery (1350mah to 1120mah)
  • Better contacts/email sync via ActiveSync & Outlook
  • Extremely software expandable (plenty MP3 Players/Games in market)
  • MicroSD format more compatible with more common SD slot devices with adaptor (than MS Duo)
  • Higher Video capture framerate (QVGA 30FPS, Samples)
  • Photos are sharper than the p990i
  • Camera Marco Mode
  • Faster 400Mhz Samsung Processor (to the P990i ARM9)
  • Bigger, more comfortable QWERTY keyboard
  • Quad-Band for various US/Europe Networks
  • HSDPA 3.5G Networks
  • Up to Wireless-G (54Mbps) Networks
  • Larger screen at same res
  • Relatively Cheaper
  • Plug & play through any Mini-USB port

Dopod 838 Pro Disadvantages:

  • No Radio!
  • Dumb MicroSD card format instead of fullsized SD (Adaptor Nightmare)
  • MicroSD only up to 1GB capacity mainstream (with 2GB anounced only recently)
  • Heavier (176g)
  • Wasted space at keyboard Sides
  • Not all front hardware buttons are backlighted (only softkeys, answer, hangup lighted)
  • Talking is like holding an “N-gage” to your head
  • Longer (2second+) shutter lag between shots
  • Camera No Autofocus
  • 65k Colour screen
  • No 3.5mm Audio Jack
  • Longtime OEM, HTC, has to establish its Dopod Housebrand, mostly unheard or new to the average consumer/layman.
  • Not much of a Wow! factor compared to SE phones (& quality too)
  • Not very spectacular & remote after sales & repair service center (SG side dependant)

I didn’t touch on common features like Bluetooth (with A2DP & Audio Remote support), IrDA, Wifi, 128MB ROM/64MB RAM, Jogdial keys , no-software filesize limit, top flashing indictor lights, LED flash, being a “USB-mass-storage device” when PC-plugged & the 2MegaPixel camera as they are all common features. But I guess it’s the flexiblity built into the Windows OS which currently won me over. That is important as I can ultilise more features of the device with new upgraded software or registry changes given the nature of the Win Mobile OS, something the Symbian side can’t really do without risky flashing or hacking.

The lowdown is generally: Get the P990i if you want a phone with PDA functions OR Get the Dopod 838 Pro if you want a PDA with phone functions.

Firefox Missing Bookmark, Profile and Extensions Restore

6
Firefox

😯 The last few upgrades for firefox had been rather cool for me, till the latest 1.5.0.6 which completely wiped out my bookmarks… My years of bookmarking all GONE! Duh… only to rejectively close the program, take a timeout only to slowly recreate their bookmarks while chanting swear words – hehe thats what most users will do after being “betrayed” but their favorite browser, so as it would be…

For me it’s a different story as I backup my bookmarks, (the wonders of backing up) but considering my last backup being more than a few months ago, I am really missing out alot. (Even WinXP system restore won’t get them to return).

 Latter do most of us know, that Firefox is actually smart enough to keep backups of your bookmarks (thats why its still the best web browser right?) & to prevent file corruption whenever Firefox ever had a chance to crash.

So don’t just cry & weep over the browser or your bookmarks in the fine comfort or digital death (R.I.P), here are the steps to get them up as good as new:

In WinXP, head to the following directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[Some Code Hash].default\bookmarkbackups

Replacing whatever in the [Brackets] with your username to get to the hidden folder path. From there, copy out the latest bookmark file (usually named to dates like bookmarks-2006-08-10.html)

Start Firefox, under Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks, Choose File -> Import then point it towards the file you’ve copied out ok & vollia! all your latest bookmarks are all in! Remember to backup the .html file in a safe place in your harddrive just as an added precaution, (also in case future updates move or deletes the bookmark backup folder).

Inside the C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ folder is also an assortment of personal data which might want to backup as well, such as saved form history, browsing history, extensions as well as your encrypted saved password file (so it beats having to remember all your login passwords). Perfect if you are migrating your firefox profile from PC to PC.

Since all your passwords are stored in the files key3.db and signons.txt, you might want to get around some possible hacking problems by encrypting or renaming these files, as told by this rather useful resource by cybernet to mask your password file.

Lastly, with Firefox besides being a fast stable browser with excellent tabbed browsing, extensions are the other thing why Firefox is DA browser! With some of my personal recommendations of the extensions I use, you can check them out by searching through the Firefox extension database.

😎 Recommended Extensions:

  • Adblock – Blocks ads, etc perfect for adsense publishers who don’t want to accidentally click on their own ads.
  • CrashRecovery – With this, crashes are good! The Purr-fect tool for any system reboot/crash. Restores all tabs with actual URLs on next run.
  • Dictionary Tooltip – Searches 20 over online dictionaries for the meaning of any single word you highlight in FF.
  • IE Tab – IE only websites? screwed up layouts? emulate Internet Explorer in FF!
  • Duplicate Tab – Ctrl-N to the maxes, being Ctrl-T this time

On yea yesterday was Singapore’s 41st birthday! Happy National Dayz!

Opps there comes gravity, back to reality…

Caught up with revision over the weekend. Guess its wake up, study study, eat, bath, study study from now on.. Recieved a call from Shuppedo regarding the 01S22 SAJC class of 2001 gathering the coming Friday, haiz might not be able to make it due to papers on that day & the week after. When I told matters could be worst, I might need to also reject my Primary School Class outing soon too. Bgwwhh! Not to mention Mum’s invitational Fireworks function next Tuesday night… Sorry Gals & Guys, da dude’s nerdy *takes out thick nerd like glasses* duh now, chill-out nights are little off now… Haha no-life-mode now… duh!

Semester 3 Exams

Studies:
Almost splatted flat on the table after finishing the Thermofluids revision tutorial, only to try to raise another finger at getting few Engineering Maths sample papers cleared. Good thing that all my projects are done now this semester. But the funny thing is that I am the only one in class who actually got every assignment done & handed up. Why? things are very different in my present class, there is no mood to study at all, most like to do is just play game on mofunzone.com everyday, if not it’s DOTA or gunbound.

My class as of now:
I kinda miss my previous class of DME/25 at least we were a good study bunch not to mention more disciplined, that really set the mood to study, not to mention friendly competition (& at least there were 3 girls in that class too, compared to NADA now). When the classes split in Sem 3, & I was streamed to CIE class, many thought that my new class was the “elite class”, where I was brought too to more “compatible arena”.

Latter were they wrong. Things are much more challenging now – if it is not self-studies & pushing myself to standards purely on personal discipline without any class benchmarks at all, it’s helping others in the class who really needs it most, so that they won’t slack & die, not to mention happily managing leadership roles in 3 of my project groups (GEMS, Workshop & Product design). Nevertheless, contacts & studies are still strong with my other class, where I can at least maintain a frequency of studies.

Yes, its a very challenging Semester with my goal to get at least 5 Ds (Aim 6) this semester to maintain the standard, currently it seems bright for 3 modules already, GEMS, PDD & hopefully DTS, aiming to bag the rest in CAD, CAM, MECH & THERMO. I feel completely out of place, not to mention having to set my own pace of study & not be distracted by them or adhere to their pace of study, which can be rather detrimental to me as a whole.

Ultimately, given the dire situations, there are limits to who I can help & teach in class as well, thus a few inevitable & selective principles I’ve set: Help those who want to help themselves, IOW I will help those who want & are willing to strive & learn. Yes, situations are a little extreme in my class, with students missing 70% of attendance, not doing any e-learning at all or any assignment. But I just have to make do with what I have. I know people who blame their lousy teachers for lousy grades, not knowing that they are the one who can make the difference, that is the model I am embarking this semester.

Out of the ashes will rise the Phoenix.

After closing the books for the day, killed stress by going relaxing 15km run in the evening. Came back fresher, not to mentiona with lots of flatulence!

Revised Millege for the week (7 day period)
SP Gym 3+1 Sets Weight Training, no threadmill – Tuesday
Sunset Way Canal Route 9km -Wednesday
SP Gym 2+1 Sets Weight Training, no threadmill – Wednesday
SP Gym 3+1 Varied Weight Training + 5.2km treadmill – Friday

Total Mileage/week = 29.2km (97% of 30km a week target met)

Crash Your VW Jetta, Semester 3 loads

0
Crash your Jetta!

Seemingly, the animation department of Volkswagon seems to be up on a few cups of radioactive coffee lately, featuring some simple but rather neat animation of their Jetta Crash tests on their website. With rather bizarre items: UFO, Chicken Truck, Godzilla’s Feet, Humpy Dumpy’s Wall, just to name a few. Check it out here.

Unless you spot a UXGA monitor, try viewing the video with your window minimised, or you won’t be able to view all the dropdown options from the flash menu.

Tonight there will be be Movies @ the Padang Esplanade Area, brought to you by Class 95 FM. Free movies (Xmen3 & MI3) will be screened on the big screen together with 7-11 providing beverages & movie edibles.

Moreover, there will be fireworks and opening by our President SR Nathan, near One-Fullerton, where my parents will be hanging out for the night for a (blah blah blah) invitational gathering at Walton International, with an uninterupted VIP sky view of the show as they say… Mmm, there will be another $2M dollar fireworks on on Tuesday night too, before National Day. But looks like I would have to give all that a go, together with chill-outs these few weekend nights dudes… Sorry, got 3 Papers & a presentation next week, not to mention semester exams brrgggh!. The good news is, at least 3/8 modules are more of less cleared for me now & I think this is the hardest it can ever get in year 2.

School Sporting Arena Updates:

  • Team QuikSilver protest for the Poly50 had been REJECTED. Captain pissed! 👿
  • SP poolside gym spots a 3 new Paramount fitness machines. Tested them out on opening day when they are all still smelling fresh & new: one Free motion Modular rack, a Lats pull down & Leg/calves push off machine. On top of that, we have a new Abs station & a Bench press rack, on top of new digital weighing machine.

I guess the Paramount modular machine is very similar to the free motion machines I’ve used in other gyms, being all-in-wonders for biceps, triceps, chest & core. My recommendations, bring your own weight handles when you use the modular rack, the current handles have steel edges very inflexible, flesh cutting & used incorrectly, can result in wrist injuries.

Still miss the old flat pecs press machine, haiz now gotta change my weights regime & recalculate 75% & max strength weighing…

Mileage for the week (7 day period)
SP Gym 3+1 Sets Weight Training, no treadmill – Tuesday
Sunset Way Canal Route 9km -Wednesday
SP Gym 2+1 Sets Weight Training, no treadmill – Wednesday
SP Gym 3+1 Varied Weight Training + 5.2km treadmill – Friday
Total Mileage/week = 14.2km (47% of 30km a week target met)

Mileage is dropping by a substantial amount during the exam period, but had been very hungry lately… stress related?

Modules cleared, New SP website

7

Woot the poolside gym will be closed today, as they are installing a a new multi-rack weight station. Out goes the 2 decade old Universal station in place of a newer spanky one. So as told by the gym Auntie yesterday. Wonder what will it be… & that would be a good reason to visit the gym tomorrow (3rd time this week) after my Mechanics practical test!

Dota-ing between lessons

Mmm after tomorrow, can safely strike out modules Design Technique & Skills (DTS) & GEMS (Online Entrepreneurship) only when I clear my last blackboard online test component tomorrow. Product Design Module is more less done too (so thats 3/8 modules done), with just another presentation to give to the department heads next week & be rest assured it WILL be impressive! *3 ICA Exams, 1 Pres, 1 Prac, 3 Papers To Go*

New stuffs, well beside my haircut & using a “new” phone without all my contacts, Firefox 1.5.0.6 is out, just updated, Mmmm the themes feature seems new to me, Niffy.

Talking bout browsers, SP website had been updated with a brand ummm, new look. As it goes, I find that I am always criticising SP releated websites. Not sure sure why but I personally find it bad of always doing so. Come to think of it, I guess thats the next best thing Singaporeans are good at right? Complaining, well… beside the country-wide sport of queuing. I think never had I every commended on any SP related website. But as a Web designer & IT Consultant myself, just like to voice & share my thoughts, here are few of them:

The intranet based elements (such as SAS) are the same, nothing much new, except a change in colour from replacing the header images. Blackboard running same software version, so is the library, all still independent systems. Otherwise nothing new.

Inaccessible menus. You have to navigate past 3 pages from the main page to finally get to the login page either SAS, Blackboard or Eliser facilities. Instead of the previous dropdown menu launch, not to mention more number of clicks.

The page have to be displayed at 1024×768 res, otherwise it will be completely distorted (don’t the designers know how to set fixed table widths or css?). Actually 800×600 is actually a web standard, though 90% of laptop & desktop market share come pre-installed with mainstream Win XP running at default 1024×768. However, this is a nightmare for slower computers, older monitors, UMPCS & mobile based devices as the distortion will be greater. Anyway, even if you are not maximised @ 1024×768, the distortion will show – very very bad & unprofessional image for an organisation for first impressions, especially right on the mainpage.

The certificate frenzy is still on. In this present materialistic world, its all just up for the collection of TrustSG/ISO ratings, if that is one’s definition of “fantastic”. But the thing which users hate most are browser prompts, being a clicking nightmare to accept site certificates on SP web – just for the stake of having site certificates. Don’t they ever know about web interactivity & user-friendliness?

Heard from staff that they actually have to consult an overseas designer to do the redesigning, mmm because we don’t have faith in our own students & teachers alike? Or maybe we just lack local talent…

SP Web feedback? I have! I have!

DBday… Its here soon…

Darius Birthday

Last Saturday – Happy Birthday Darius! (No CAKE!?) held at the Caribbean condo at harbour front. Its literally a water city, yea cool with swimming pools, fountains here & there, but otherwise not my taste of housing (No CAKE!?) with a giant longkang running through the whole area, like Venice? haha maybe not…

I just find Singapore sea water too strong smelling, dirty & stinky to appreciate, just ask any Scuba Diver (No CAKE!?) & you will know why we don’t like to dive in Singapore (No CAKE!?) either. Met up with Elrick earlier that day before to get Darius Bday gift, got this neat punk rock T-shirt over a few Devilish shirts I’ve shortlisted in Queensway, the rest are just too sinister I guess. Coupled in with that are 2 pairs of neoprene socks courtesy of Elrick & Derek with the (& most expensive) Barracuda mousepad.

Tennis Anyone?

Nevertheless had few nice intro games of Tennis courtesy of Darius Dad (Thanks Uncle!) who booked it for us. Played tri-doubles (No CAKE!?) with Yiying, Guetping, Weijian & Elrick as coach. Till Sir-Artillery-Addison came into the game, started whacking & losing 4 tennis balls out-court straight at a go…

Left the party round 11.30pm only to be greeted with an empty habourfront bus interchange. Derek was there too & guess we just stood there staring at the Timing Board in disbelief for 5 mins or so before actually realizing that we continue doing so, we might even miss the last train – which we caught on our way in (No CAKE!?).

Catching the last train is kinda cool too, with staff running all round the station telling people to get in or NEVER! & all the underground tunnel lights are on too, so I could actually see how wide our tunnels are, not something we can see everyday. Exited the train at my stop with a rather interesting platform announcement politely telling all commuters to SCRAM from the station as there are no trains left for joyrides boy! or we will CLOSE & leave you to starve here for the NIGHT! Bwwhharrr!

Well thats all for last Saturday, on a more present side, I’ve never had funny dreams so often lately, especially being school & exam related ones. Well I do not know how you can define a nitemare, but can one in an exam situation where I could not attempt all questions and get 100 be considered one? Arrrghh! & though the exams are fast approaching too, but yea I really had such a dream… so free, so helpless in an exam, thats really so scary…

Waited dingying-ly long for my bus today only to see it arrive 20 mins later, not one but a CONVOY OF 4 OF THEM TOGETHER! Omg… All Superbuses… Caught TV mobile onboard then & heck there was Elmo on Channel News Asia! Dancing away to the start of each program each time a string of commercials ended. Niffy!

There was some petition booth at FC4 collecting signatures before closing day today against the change of the current Kofu management. & man was FC4 packed man, with most stores sold out before 1pm.

Last by not least, I am finally GSM contactable! Till I drool over a SE p990i, I am currently using my sister’s old Nokia 7250i in place of my now disfunct Siemens SX1. Dug around my home drawers & found that on top of a few old DECT phones, a Nokia 880, Nokia 3315 & my old Siemens SL45! Interesting things you can find lying around the house… its like a mini treasure hunt!

Lessons, lessons

With the Semester Exams sighted on Horizon, been very very busy with tests, projects & reports over the last few days. Not to mention catching up on tutorials & eventually *qualify myself* to dig up the blackboard for sample papers to do in practice for the semester exams due in 2 weeks time. This term is extremely short, with an increased workload & modules taken – a very bad combination. I think this is the worst it can ever get as second year is usually the most toughest period of study. Hopefully the ‘A’ modules next Semester will be much easier. I guess I will be training most of these few weeks by myself & may not be able to make it for official track training till the exams are over. Mmainly as training takes time & usually ends too late to actually get anything productive done for the rest of the night. As of today, I have 5ICAs, 4Races, 3Papers, 2Reports, 1Presentation to do till end August. Busy Busy Busy.

To wrap things up short & sweet, happenings worth noting for the past week & present:

North East line was down on Monday, due to a power cable breakage failure. Coincidentally on the day where I rode through the line my very first time the day before (Sunday). Maybe my Magneto powers after the Mizuno Wave Run could have caused it. Dammit

Universal Studios gonna build Singapore’s 2nd IR on Sentosa, promising a themepark bigger than that in Hollywood (ride area only) & spotting more indoor (not to mention air-conditioned) attractions. Whee! looks like we will be seeing Doc Brown, ET (The ride) or The Mummy Returns Indoor inverter coasters in the not too distant future… right on our shores!

My Phone Died yesterday (KIA), Thursday. Refusing to boot showing only a white screen. Would be considering a Sony Ericsson p990i, had been considering this range of SE phones since the P800 around 2001. And Sony Ericsson phones are definately much much better than what it was many years back (remember the problematic T68/T68i & T610?). It’s hearty to hear too that SE is the top ranking & best rated brand overall now, topping the charts at Cnet too.

We have 3 days left (As of 28th Aug) till Food Court 4 closes on 1st aug, with a contractor change & Kofu leaving the current premises. So as told from after asking the cleaner auntie when clearing our plates during lunch today. The place will be down for a month, renovated with new stores. BBArghh!!!! No more favourite Chicken Cutlet, Pasta, Fried Rice, Nasi Padang & Giant Bowled Ban Mian! Arghh!!!! FC3 & FC6 will IMPLODE with lunch crowds! well.. unless they move FC7 (aka mobile FC) to the T16 plaza area, not to mention the ultra long queues presently for fatty drippy Ramly Burgers at FC7, aka the business side.

Happy Birthday DARIUS! Hehe wait.. just wait for us at your party tomorrow! Brrwhahahaa ya know swimming pools & birthday parties definately don’t mix! Now where do I keep those cable ties & super soaker… *deep evil laughter*

Mizuno Wave Run, Track & Field Meet

Mizuno Wave Run 2006

Mizuno Wave Run at Kovan last sunday was a one the first few leisure competitive run events of the year – being able to get the track team all together. The atmosphere is definitely an intro to the many major public competitive runs for the juniors, contrary to the previous X-ctry & Newpaper Big walk. Everything looks set towards the 1/2 marathon or marathon target for many at year end. Finished the Mizuno 10km in 50:39 after passing the finish (personal timing). This timing includes the delay taken to cross the start line & one traffic light stop in the run itself, so I guess a 46-47min timing should be a realistic actual timing, which is actually kinda cool, considering this a a terrain run with a timing close to my IVP 10000m flat event last year. Met up with SGRunners there (this race’s group is huge, you can’t miss them!) for a photo shoot at the event, surprised Bee & Renohtaram can still recognize me, hehe.

SP Track & Field Meet 2006 was on last Wednesday afternoon. With most of us from track being sports officials. The star being Mr David stealing the show with the best show of bloopers for starts. Nevertheless it was a good event with track (in the various represented schools) raking in a respectable number of medals & trophies. CLS bagged the largest overal points & took the challenge trophy (considering they are the only ones there).
