Saturday outs… and so is sun…

1

Its a lazy morning today… so what can I do but kickstart it with a nice breakfast watching Disney’s Inspector gadget movie 2 on the computer… Pretty got me up and going. Met up with my platoonmate John who drove down to pick me up in his mum’s car for some army and games shopping at beach road. After some reckless lane changes, dodges and speeding, made an illegal parking at our destination in front of a police post (hehe).

Got lots of niffy luxury items there, ranging form an inflatable pillow to a field chair and lots of bicycle hooks to pitch a groundsheet tent outfield. Tetete… too bad the game store don’t stock up gameboy games I want, like Worms World Party and Crazy Taxi, too bad for them. Ate lunch (yummy chicken chopz) within the army market’s hawker center before heading back to the carpark to find- hey no parking summons for 2 whole hours! yipee!

Met up with another platoonmate Chonggen later who got his driver to ferry him to meet us around Plaza Singapura then finally Sunshine plaza at selegi for the anime and manga- a shopping place he always reco.

The place is not only filled with anime DVDs and manga, but my fav model kits as well. Being a Patlabor fan, I got the Mobile police New OVA DVD series ($45) and a Patlabor 1/35 type-J9 Griffon master grade mecha kit (72 bucks), had been looking all around Singapore for that kit sometime and I am glad I finally come across a store which actually sells it.

When we all done and spent with the day of shopping, (so hey and payday IS TODAY anyway) dropped by parklane shopping center for 2 matches of team based C&C Generals matches (Match 1. 3xNormal comp and match 2. 2x Normal + 1X Hard comp) at one of the many lan shops there. When all done around 6.30pm its time to call it a day while everybody go off for their individual dinner appointments. I have a dinner appointment with my family at great world city, but they are coming down to fetch me over at Selegi, so I pretty much wandered and explored parklane while waiting for them to arrive. Its quite interesting to know that such an old shopping center can actually be so popular with youngsters in the area. Locked onto 2 music stores there where I got a Proel, Italy guitar stand at $30 bucks there. My next item o get would be a tuner, but thats a job for some other day…

I ended up having dinner at some Rex restaurant around there vicinity. Even if we order al-carte, the bill didn’t cost much a bomb as I expected it to be- $40. Continued with my family to visit my grandmother’s place for the night before heading home for some much needed rest.

And Darryl is bugging me to drop by BB driving center for my basic theory test (BTT) evaluation tomorrow.. dang, partly because he wants to take the BTT with me on the 30th this month, but I am just too lazy to study my highwaycode for it…

But I wanna DRIVE by this YEAR! ARgh!

Wet week.

0

The last week is one which truly tests one’s ability to carry in all weather conditions- both in the sun and rain. Is was definitely not a “very” wet week but sometimes I feel that rain always come always so at the right moment when you are outdoors, in fact on two occasions (Mon and Wednesday). Personally I don’t mind the sun but its the rain which really matters and messes up things the most, not to mention team morale. Walking with or without raincoat usually equals to wet soggy and squishy trekking boots for tens of kilometers. Even if you do try to keep your shirts and top dry to fend away from a possible cold and fever, (what else could be worst?) the onset of blisters and the inevitable foot rot will get ya in the days to come. dang…

Admin-wise, the course is coming to an end. And the usual feeling of returning stores is very much of a deja-vu for me. The happy part comes when we all as a platoon can it tops and an accomplishment, another step in NS life (which also marks an end of “a suffering phrase too”) but sadly too the departure as we course mates break back to our individual units, usually from experience, its usually quite difficult to get back together again being in separate units, with the exception of few lucky ones…

On all tests passed on first attempt all so far so good, which surfaced more headaches for me. Why? heres the story:

There had been a lot of talk going on lately on whos getting the best trainee award. Personally, my OC and even my CO came personally to give us trainees a good and motivation prep talk before the commence of last week’s exercises. One thing I noted (within the platoon) is them highlighting telling us on pushing for the best and getting what ever opportunities we have- if you work towards it. Don’t do so and you will most probably regret next time. I had been a selected as a potential best candidate in this category. Though I personally feel that (and I had not gotten such an award before) its an honor to actually get hold of that award, they glory, fame recognition and stuffs.. *duh* but all these are superficial and I feel that there is more which meets the eye…

why?

This could mean a possible big decision for me and change in my period of active serving in NS. Why? though I always long to be an officer in BMT, my perspective changed largely when I went though specialist training in Sispec and entered my unit and I am happy as what I am in now (so why am I grumbling bout this?). Well, the best trainee in my course currently have the ability to be transferred to the officer cadet school for specialised training. And opportunity I wanted to grab few months back but shunned presently now. If I accept the offer, that could mean a whole new start for me, a whole new path and area to explore in the army. But too, at the possible expense of leaving my unit and old platoon mates behind…

How can I ever forget them? I must really commend on my platoonmates support, they had been rather up lately, pushing for me to fight against other units within the course for the best trainee position. I feel that that without their support I wouldn’t have came this far. I must do something to repay them someday, even if I didn’t come out tops.

Though I can choose to reject the offer and return back to my unit and platoon as a whole and continue life from there, I guess that would be one of the dumbest thing I could do as not everybody will ever get such a a chance in life, not to mention putting everybody in disappointment and their efforts into the drain. Its just one of the choices one will face in life, not to mention the increased load and responsibly one may get as a commissioned officer.

Oh well *sighs*

Looking back, sometimes I think I think too much, counting the chickens before they are hatched. the best trainee had not been finalised yet and theres still one more week left in course when the decision would be actually made. But its good to come prepared and not make rash decisions later on. Oh well, I am looking forward to the graduation next week, hope all goes well for the final last week.

~

Would be meeting up with my friends for some army, anime and games shopping tomorrow from noon. Its just great having friends who drives, so convenient.

Thoughts for food.

1

Its slightly less than 1 week into 2004 and my mum is all ready putting on chinese new year decorations around the house, all red, I see. Well Chinese new year is around the corner too, very exciting wonder how much ang pao money will I get this year….

Breakfast was special, as intended we, as a family had tim sum, where? at bukit merah view hawker center, the store is quite popular with the people around there, though I should reco they serve a larger variety of tim sum, as they are definately lacking in some popular dishes such as shrimp puffs and “man tou” (pan fried golden buns). After that, besides gaming all my time away in front of the computer, got some good guitar practice today, few hours in the morning and later in the evening, finally getting my strumming up to some acceptable standards, playing with the E, D and A chords mostly.. *duh* Later around noon, went out to the nearby 162 family restaurant in BM for lunch. Shopped around the central thereafter for some gadgets like a mini fan for “luxuries” whenever I am outfield training and got some grocery chores done roughly within an hour before heading home.

And now, Its the same old boring phrase- BOOK IN To CAMP AGAIN….

Only that this time, theres no mid-week breather break like what we had the last 2 weeks (christmas and new year) DaRn!

On a note, it’s 2 1/2 weeks before I get my 3rd SGT rank, and the end of life as a army trainee too. Lots of stuff had happened so far on course, very interesting things I say, but very fun too. The instructors are very kind and professional. gd gd. I think I did miss out some thing that the course accomodation is indeed very nice and new, in fact better than what it was in unit.. *dreamz* With that, though sadly, I feel that I am currently under allot of pressure by my OC to get the best trainee position in course presently, well because he knew bout it too. Though I can tell that it is “undirected positive motivation” It just bugs me for him to tell that that he have “something waiting for me” when I return back to unit. Not to mention not wanting to disappoint what my unit mates and CSM have expected on me. Well, I am already trying my best!

Moreover, I hope that my achievements throughout the course won’t imply much of an offense to other trainees, esp those who long for best trainee position too. I had seen such “politics” going on in BMT before, but so far I had not seen such behavior here myself, partly everybody as commanders are definately more mature and thinking than those childish BMT bastards…

When I come to think about it, it came pretty much of a surprise too me too- The thought of best trainee actually didn’t even dawn to me (being such a slacker myself, through BMT and Sispec) till one of the course instructors told me of some finalisation they had made to so-called “pluck of the cream of the crop”… SHITZ!

Hope all goes well. I just gotta stop counting the chickens before they are hatched too. It not end of course yet and anything and anybody could take over my top spot… Mmm though, the title of best trainee does seems good too.. *grins*

Just gotta try my best… day by day

Sleep sleep

0

Slept on the bus on the way home today and missed my stop, one of the dumb things I ever get to do in life… I am just super tried today, normally I would try to stay awake to enjoy my weekends but today’s an exception- having slept from 4.30am only to wake up at 7.25am yesterday to complete some dumb planning exercise revision thingy. Its even worst than going outfield (fieldcamp), at least you get you full 7 hours of rest there.

This shagging moment is one to be remembered, considering that you are still incamp, near your living quarters where you can move to and fro, in and out, but you can sleep cos you got to much things and planning given to you on purpose late at night to us teams to compile and finish! argh. Concussed on my bed after showering upon reaching home today 3pm (and yea so busy till be even didn’t even get to bathe for 2 days INCAMP, the feeling in just weird!). Plans to go catch a movie (School of rock) in the afternoon is pretty much cancelled too because of this. Woke up around 7pm today just in time for dinner, then did some gaming and reading before concussing for a second time today.

Would be having Tim Sum breakfast outside tomorrow morning, would be looking forward to that! yummy!

The fun’s over.

0

So much for new year’s day, I just wanna update the blog on some new stuffs I tried today before booking back to camp, namely acquiring a new interest- paintball!, with Tippmann USA having a gun of my liking, the A-5. Orchard CC is the place in Singapore with a paintball fighting arena, not to mention the amount of money I have to put in to start such a sporting interest.

Oh well. *grins*

Played a little warcraft3 in the afternoon, Installed Gunbound, a cute worms like game and got quite stuck to it for awhile. Ok with that in hand then, I would be back this saturday evening. so tata!

New year’s morning

0

Well, its new year’s day, the morning! A fine day so far, the ambience, the breakfast, the hopes for a nice good 2004. Didn’t have much time to recap actually what happened yesterday in my previous post, so I would just get blabbering on this one. New year’s eve, booked out of camp around noon, got home, ate mum’s home cooked beehoon soup for lunch, slacked and rested as much I can in the afternoon before setting of to beach road for a steamboat dinner at Goldenmile complex.

As traffic is expected to be quite bad at the central district area, got my dad to park the car at he outskirts of town near the shaw towers area, but very much within walking distance to suntec where I did some shopping around the place (and a nice walk after dinner too), got a paintball games mag and dec issue of total guitar magazine. As the new year’s celebrations are at esplanade area, so we pretty much made our way to millena walk, then marina square, raffles one link thereafter for some hours of coffee and snacks at a coffee club (having 2 shots of their house special brew to stay awake) till bout 11.40pm where we made our way to the esplanade bayfront for the actual event itself.

Guess that covers most of it. have a wonderful new year’s day!

Happy new year

0

The fireworks are up, so are the crowds at the esplanade/ esplanade bridge. There was more fireworks there than last year’s lasting bout 20minutes worth of continuous fireworks at the bay area. Not bad, not bad. I just love the “twilight” period between christmas and new year, everyone’s just simply crazy- everybody’s always happy, smiling, like going with party hats and “honk honk”, horns everywhere, the rampage off plucking stars off the esplanade decoration while the crew and guards desperately try to keep the crowd’s hand off the “masterpiece”. “Kouped” two star screws myself… keke… *snickers* by the time I walked back the same location after sometime, the whole sculpture had been “unscrewed” clean off the deco stars by the crazy mob, spectacular!

The area is just super crowded and some pushing on the bridge which offended quite a few people there, the fullerton bridge is just so packed with people and vehicles, it just seems that it will collapse under the weight. Somehow, I don’t understand why would anyone still wanna go on it when nobody could even move in there. Its just one time when human traffic wins over vehicular traffic. Lolz! The confetti and horn period was rather fun at the end of the countdown, and everyone was just literally overly showered by those, dispensing and spraying like theres no tomorrow, very messy! Till I get my own digital camera, I just we would have to wait till I develop the film for this year’s countdown photos…

Last sunday of 2003.

0

Argh! fingers are aching like crazy today aftersome practice time with my new guitar, just a bit more tries over the weeks and I should be able to get the hang of it and become immune to the pain.

And so its the last sunday of the year, also the last blog entry before I head back to camp for the week, also the last book-out/book-in for the year. Oh well when you come to think about it 2003 just zipped past me, but that don’t seem to bug me one bit either.. maybe because I am in the army? dang yea- ORD is not near, no holiday ending (school re-opening) blues or any school related shit the education system had casted upon our “poor” kids of Singapore.

On a sunday note:

Woke after today at 9am feeling great and better than the last few days, no sore throat bad nose or feverish feeling. Only some minor cough and lots and lots of plam. icks! With that aside, who cares bout the sickness when I’ve got a nice french garlic bagle, clam cowder and tea coupled with the sunday comics, ahhh it was a good morning. *cough**cough*

After some morning guitar practice and some light dose of usual Counter-Strike after lunch (The SG CS friends server had this new matrix mod running on their servers quite cool but rather stupid). Checked out some of my usual “to-be-surfed-to-get-updates” sites and hey Rob Alvey got 2 new coaster videos for download, always like their theme park movies.

Would be going back to good old Tekong on mon and tuesday, had been sometime since I did too and when I did that, it was like “haha sucker! never gonna set foot on ya again! ” oh well… *grunts* on top of that training would be tough the next few days, hope I am up and recovered by then. Don’t want this dang cough to hold me up so much next week.

Any new year resolutions?

or was that’s last year’s?…. Lol!

Washburn

2

Yea, got my guitar today, a Washburn WG228 electric guitar, plays well on the clean and distorts. On the technical side, it spots a humbucker/single coil/humbucker (H/S/H) setup, Floyd-Rose tremlo with locking system and a well finished fretboard and polished greenish-black body throughout. Very worth it for the price range. I settled for an ibanez practice amp and a HoM bag which came as a package, everything setting me back by about $450. And da music store (Swee Lee) was rather much more crowded than usual, partly because they are having a year end sale at the moment. The guy who served me was rather on and kind, quite good service I say.Ok time for more practice on this guitar before I can get up and making music again.

Rock time!

Its just like another weekend.

0

Having christmas day off camp is just like having another weekend (book out the day before and back the very next night) when you come to think about it, we NSFs are actually working 6 day weeks in the army, talking about worker exploitation! And on top of that we work 72 hours a week without overtime pay either, dammit!

With that discovery aside, it had been quite a nice week so far with the exception of me almost catching a fever 2 days ago after the dumb mud pool experience and having a bad flu this morning. However, Its neat to have a day off midweek to let of some steam, esp with the fast pace of incamp training, sa “breather” is very much appreciated.

Yea! theres only tomorrow (friday) and saturday morning of “work” till I book out of the hellhole again, hope it will be fast, then out to civilian life again! But first, gotta book-in back to camp tonite to actualy make that happen…

dammit!

Christmas lunch with fam, Swee Lee closed

0

Dropped down to Bras Basah Complex for lunch with my family and to enquire on my new guitar at Swee lee music store, but they are closed. Quite expected as they failed to answer my repeated calls to their showroom. However as stated on their website they are opened on public holidays. But an apologetic piece of paper stuck on the store’s main door (saying that they are closed for the day and will only open tomorrow) did most of the talking.

But hey I didn’t go back empty handed either, they had a neat sale list pasted on the door too, showing the in-store special offers not even advertised on their website. Let me name afew:

1) Washburn wing series guitar bundled with an ibanez 10g amp and a HoM guitar case for $349.
2) Washburn deluxe WS with a bd12e amp and HoM guitar case for $399-$449.
3) Fender Squier Affinity Stratocaster series with a Frontman 15g amp bundled with accessoires and stuffs, very much like the Squier official starter pack, all at $599.

The one I am getting is the Peavey sale bundle, with a Peavey predator plus, Peavey Rage 158 amplifier and HoM bag for $310. A very good bargain. At first I was rather paranoid of the lowly offered price, but hey its a year end clearance sale and everything’s at 20%-70% off, even drum sets and electric piano sets are going at half price. But I still won’t let my guard down either and would really check and test out my equipment before making the final purchase.

For me, that guitar’s mine man!

Would be zipping down there again this saturday for the purchase. whee!

Christmas in 15

0

Dinner was at the Mariner’s restaurant at the singapore maritime center. It was actually an eating place open for mariner’s who stop by here in their sail/shipping trips. But now its opened to the public, if not they won’t be getting much of customers either in this era of transport efficiency. The food is generally good but a little on the steep side though. The place have a very similar ambience as that of jack’s place, only brighter and set to a more ‘ship deck’ theme. Had NZ tenderloin steak set comprising together of an appetizer, soup of the day, dessert, tea and 1/2 dozen escargots for extras for bout $30 myself, that totals about $140 for the family in all. The service is friendly and the place is indeed relatively packed for Christmas eve itself. And as most restaurants like jacks, marina mandarin, etc… practice during festive seasons, you can eat wearing party hats, poppers, horns and swing sticks. Dumb, but hey its fun. If I can still remember I did went around orchard shopping with my family in party hats during last new year’s eve too, not to mention santa snow caps, turn heads and it was great!

Merry Christmas everyone!
