Great Ocean Road Australia

0

The Great Ocean Road is a scenic highway which runs along the southern coast of the Australian continent in Victoria, Australia. The road used to be a major highway (B100) until a newer inland A1 highway replaces it. Today, the road serves as a popular tourist attraction in the region. People flock to the area for its spectacular scenic views and ocean sights by the pacific.

Moreover, the road stretches from Torquay, Anglesea and ends at Allansford after the town of Warrnambool. It is about 230 km in length which can be easily covered within a day in good weather.

You can only enjoy it by driving (or be driven). It is littered with a variety of natural coastal features such as open cliff sides, grottos and coastal erosion features. You may recognize, even by name several prominent landmarks along the route, including the Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations and the London Arch/Bridge which I shall cover.

The route I took is a west bound route from Melbourne city, which you can make a day trip from. Join me on my adventures along the road of Australian National Heritage.

A road built by WW1 soldiers

Upon reaching Torquay, the Great Ocean Road starts with the “Great Ocean Road Archway”. It signifies the start of the historical road. Here you can find a memorial structure, as well as a few informative boards telling you about the history of the road. The marker marks the start of the route. It is also lined with a couple of sandy beaches.

On a little history, the Great Ocean Road opened in 1932. The idea of a long coastal road was first planned towards the end of the First World War to improve on existing road conditions. Before that, the rugged south-west coast of Victoria was accessible only by sea or rough bush track.

Also, then chairman of the Country Roads Board, Mr William Calder wanted to provide jobs for returning soldiers. The work scope involves construction work, which Mr Calder managed to obtain funds from the State War Council to work on the building of new roads.

From there, with funds, the road was subsequently built by the returning soldiers between 1919 and 1932. When opened it is dedicated to soldiers killed during World War I.

The world’s largest war memorial

Henceforth, the Great Ocean road has the reputation as the world’s largest war memorial. Moreover, given its fantastic oceanic sights, he saw great value of the road serving the people, it was even originally named a “Tourist Road”.

Today, the Great Ocean Road serves more of a tourist route as well as an access point for the high-end beach residences in the town. The road traverses rainforests, as well as access way for beaches. Most road traffic these days bypass the coastal road via major highways running more further inland.

Great driving roads

The Great Ocean Road passes through a number of hilly passes, hugging the coastline affectionately. This part which runs along the ocean is also known as the Surf Coast. You often see the waves crashing by the sandy beaches which line the side of this great ocean road.

You will spend a great deal of time traveling through these roads between attractions. On the ocean sights, often you always be greeted with views of a clean undisturbed horizon separating the sea from the sky. The view does of the ocean never gets old.

Furthermore, the roads regularly hug the terrain sometimes heading out into a flat clearing where nice sandy beaches. Often, you get a rocky hill face on one side and fantastic view of ocean on the other.

With a mix of inclines and declines along the route, the roads are most it is reminiscent of the nice winding coastal roads in Hawaii too. They snake and meander along the ocean lines, where the sea meets the continent. For the starting part of the journey you will pass through a hilly winding road.

At times only a guardrail separates you from the road to the sea. Traffic is often fairly light as most of the working and freight traffic redirected through the newer northern A1 highway.

Remember to stop along the route!

Moreover, this Surf Coast sits on the part the road between Torquay and Cape Otway. It provides clear unobstructed views of the Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean. Additionally, there are regular scenic stop points littered along the road.

They are just an open clearing by the side of the road which you can pull up to allow faster vehicles to overtake. Just simply pull they are usually large enough with space for 3 cars length.

Also, the roads are mainly two lane dual carriageway and is covered by a speed limit between 50 – 100 kmph. The speed limits are interestingly capped at 100 kmph even on windy twisty roads. Drive within your capacity, and there will be no takers of the Darwin award here!

Driving on, on the middle part of your journey, towards Beechforest, the road suddenly brings you into an inland wooded forested area. You encounter a couple of tight curves and twisty bends through the forest before leading out into open farm plains.

Here, you can find large plains full of livestock here. Just be careful of the random sheep crossing the road. Surprisingly, the speed limit is cap here even at the bends are at a blistering 100kmph.

Coastal towns

With excellent ocean views, no wonder the ocean road is a popular spot for beach side holiday homes. These can cost and set you back in the excess of even 2 million for a property on a hill overlooking the ocean.

On a nice sunny day a couple of towns along the route. One such town is Apollo Bay. In this small beach-side town, you can find a couple of provision stores, as well as a restaurant selling fantastic fish and chips. A recommendation will be their large seafood platter to share.

You can dine by the beach side as you hear the waves from the pacific regularly crashing into the bay beaches. Also you can find Wild Cockatoos in these town, swoppping around and chilling in the open fields by the beach side villages.

Plenty of natural sights

The highlight of the Great Ocean road besides the coastal views are a number of natural coastal sights. One main natural feature is the Twelve Apostles.

Moreover, during my visiting, there was a beautiful rainbow rising over the sea. Also, it offered beautiful photo opportunities during my visit. There are even helicopter services which you can charter for better overhead views.

Driving past Port Campbell national park brings you to a couple of erosion coastal features. Here, you have the Arch, the grotto and the London bridge.

Erosion structures and islets

I found the view of the London Bridge, one of the best breathtaking views of the entire journey. You get a majestic view of a brilliant rock formation with a hole right through it.

Moreover, it is worth noting that both the archway and London Bridge structures are of course, erosion structures. Hence, it is only a matter of time before they are completely destroyed by the force of the ocean.

Furthermore, the last main sight along the west bound road will be the Bay of Islands. This vast lagoon area is a bay filled with an assortment of surviving islet of islands. Also, it has a sense of tranquility especially near sunset with a view and draped by the orange of the setting sun.

Moreover, besides picturesque views from top lookout areas overlooking the ocean shoreline, the pale colour of the limestone on the cliffs & rock stacks in the bay reflects different variations of light. It provides picturesque shots in darker conditions with good contrast.

If you don’t use map to find the attractions, a tell tale sign of such a scenic spot is usually the sudden occurrence of a large parking area and signs by the national parks board. Here, you can following the trails leads you the shoreline where the signs behold.

Moreover, if you are flying drones. Do note that that despite most part of the ocean road being fly-zones. Areas of attractions are labeled as no-fly by the parks services. This also applies if you are in private property within the National Parks boundaries.

Good for a driving day trip

Furthermore, it is advisable to drive along the Great Ocean road to experience the great driving roads and the sights at your own pace. Renting a car is an option. If you wish to do the road and enjoy the Greta driving roads. Alternatively, there are day tours offered by tour agencies which can take you on it too by private bus.

Also, a drive along the Great Ocean road and stopping at attractions will take you and entire day (about 6 hours). You can make a day trip there from Major Australian cities, such as Melbourne. When you reach one end of the road B100, you can easily make your way up the highway by nightfall for your quick 2 hour return trip (about 200km) to where you started.

All in all, the great ocean road is one of the great natural sights southern Australia has to offer. If you are in the Victoria area or just passing by the City of Melbourne, it is a trip worth considering. The natural beauty throughout the route, the sea breezes, chill towns, good food and clean views of an undisturbed horizon separating the sea from the sky everywhere. It is a joy.

Perth Rottnest Island

0

Perth is an Australian city, and the largest capital city off the coast of Western Australia. Today, let’s check out the scenic Rottnest Island. Established in 1830s, it is one of the primary nature sites with nice bays and ocean side views to visit when you are in Perth. Rottnest is a small island located about 19 km west off the town of Fremantle in Perth.

Moreover, it is also known in it native name as “Wadjemup” to the local Noongar people. Wadjemup is also the name of one of the two lighthouses you can find on the island.

Furthermore, Rottnest island is an class A rated reserve. Hence, it the offered the highest level of protection afforded to public land. Interestingly, administered by the Rottnest Island Authority under a separate act of parliament.

Getting around Rottnest

Rottnest is a relatively popular holiday destination in Perth. Being one of the few tourist attractions in the city, Rottnest sees about half a million in annual visitors. It has a permanent population of around 300 people living on the island.

The only economical way there is ferry, with planes being the other option as there is a small airstrip. There are daily ferry services. Notably, unauthorized cars are not allowed on the island. Hence, bicycles or walking are usually the preferred transportation method of choice.

Furthermore, your pedal power can be hired on the island or through your ferry operator. Alternatively, you can bring your own by ferry from the mainland for a small fee. If you do not want to break a sweat, there is an air-conditioned coach called the Island Explorer with 18 stops all along the island for a fee.

Welcome to Quokka land

Notable “Wildlife” on the island comprises of mostly largely tame quokkas and peacocks. You can find free roaming peacocks. They tend to frequent the human inhabited regions of the island such as the jetty area, on reasons of easily accessible food.

One of the main reasons to visit Rottnest is to see the adorable native Quokkas. There are ton loads of them on the island given the lack of natural predators.

Quokkas are a different bunch. Rottnest is perhaps best known for its population of quokkas. Having sais that, Rottnest is one of the few areas in the world where the native Australian Quokka can be found. You can find them all over the island, especially in the green wooded areas where these cat-sized rodent-like marsupials roam freely. Also, they are a native species protected by the national parks authorities, which means you should not “interfere” with them in their natural habitat.

Moreover, their survival there is largely due to the exclusion of natural or introduced predators. Such as dogs and cats, which none can be found on the island.

However, considering how prevalent they are around the island and in the settlement villages, it is difficult not to come in close proximity to them. Let be give them a friendly pet. There are herbivores and consume mainly small green pine-like shrubs you can find all over the island.

Places of Interest, Rottnest Bakery and hotel

A small town settlement resides by the ferry jetty area. It used to be stable yard area. A popular store is the Rottnest bakery. You can find a variety of cold and hot pastry items. Recommend items includes cold cheesecakes, rainbow cakes, as well as hot meat pies.

Furthermore, notably, the settlement is also quite self-sufficient. There is also a grocery supermarket in the vicinity, which serves the residents and guests on the island. If a more fine dining option is what you desire, you can find a decent 3 star hotels with seaside pool bars and waitered restaurants facing the beach side by Thompson Bay. Also, Thompson Bay is also home to a marina where recreational craft can berth on your visit there.

Moreover, tucked behind the settlement area is the Rottnest museum. You can recognize it by a flag pole in front of a rather old single floored administration building or sort. Entry is free and donations is recommended. The friendly museum staff will be there to answer any queries you have.

Moreover, the island served as an Aboriginal prison between 1838 and 1931. Additionally, it was also used as a reformatory for boys from 16 May 1881.Of course, the only remnants of this prison are the building shells, which are repurposed for purposes of hospitality and tourism.

Also told is the story of the great escape of six Aboriginal prisoners, who were sent in to Rottnest Island in August 1838 for murder, assault and theft, under the superintendence of Constable Laurence Welch and a small military force. They escaped shortly after their arrival by stealing a boat.

Also during World War II, the island was used as a fortification. Here, two 9.2-inch guns were installed near the middle of the island at Oliver Hill.

Rottnest Geology

Moreover, you also learn of the island’s Geology. Rottnest is mainly a sandy, low-lying island. It comprises mostly of natural occurring limestone which is abundance here on the island.

It is formed on a base of aeolianite limestone which most of the buildings and fortifications here were made from in the early days. Moreover, the much of these limestones were also exported into mainland.

Geographically, the island covers 19 square km. The island was separated from the mainland around 7000 years ago when sea levels rose as the planet warmed. Henceforth, Human artifacts have been found on the island dating back at least 30000 years.

Beautiful natural bays facing the Oceans

Moreover, much of Rottnest roads circle around naturally occurring salt lakes (and golf courses). These water features (like the Herschel lake) as well as the green fauna are a refuge for the abundant bird life.

All in all, Rottnest is a chill place which extends from the already chill and lazy city of Perth. You are good in Rottnest for an entire afternoon day trip with the Rottnest ferry doing trips in and out of the island throughout the day in hourly intervals.

Most of the what you can see in the island can be found near the Jetty area and the Bathurst lighthouse and Long Reach bay within reasonable walking distance. After a while, most of the sights are pretty much the same, so there is not really a need to venture out far from the settlement. Having said that, also, do check out the fantastic bakery in the settlement. The items on sale are very much a delight.

All to go with your delightful and relaxing day on the island.

Australia City of Perth

0

I will like to write about a recent short trip I did to the lazy city of Perth. The City of Perth is an Australian capital city located on west side of the Australian continent. Moreover, the city is a local government area and body. It is pretty much self-run under the legislation laid by the Australian Parliament. Notably, the local government is commonly known as the Perth City Council.

Technicalities aside, though the city is not small by geographical size, the central Perth metropolitan city area has a small total ground area of 20.01 km². Also, it is home to about 22 thousand inhabitants. The City covers the Perth city center and surrounding suburbs. Also, it is surrounded by Greater Perth with a total population of about 2 million. It is the fourth-most populous city in Australia.

Panorama of Perth city central at night

Perth City Center night

A chill (but otherwise boring) city

Additionally, the main city center of Perth is where most of the action is. The numbers of tall skyscrapers home to a couple of big MNC names are also an indication of the central activity hub of the city.

Overlooking the main city center at night
Overlooking the main city center at night.

Furthermore, a main shopping district resides here too. You can find a number of big global name stores such as H&M and Zara, as well as a small number of independent boutiques here too. However, most of the shops here are from large brand retailers found everywhere, it appears stale and screams nothing too special.

perth-city-18-22

In the mornings, you can find independently-run family cafes serving hot breakfasts. Here, you can get your food fix early in the day at the start of work or your holiday trip. This is before most of the mainstream shops starts to open from 10am onwards.

The streets are always empty, even in the day!
The streets are always empty, even in the day!

Sights with very slow pace of life

In comparison to Singapore, Perth is chill and slow. It is a small lazy town. Perth is also largely known by Singaporeans as a retirement village. Hence it is a place where most retirees spend in preference of the slower way of life there.

The streets are always open and clear of cars, even on weekdays
The streets are always open and clear of cars, even on weekdays.

Moreover, to illustrate my point, shops in the city center closes early at near nightfall. Notably, there is little to no signs of nightlife in the city at all. It can be quite a bore if you are looking for places to eat or to hang out.

perth-city-18-15
Chill out cafes in the day

perth-city-18-10
Historical buildings around the city

Moreover, this is largely reflected by the seemingly lack of people here on the streets. Especially at night, the roads are devoid of people. You will be quick to be bored here in the city. This is stark in comparison to other major Australian cities such as Melbourne and Sydney with big buzzing nightlife.

The main shopping district void of people at night
The main shopping district void of people at night.

Things to do

There are a couple sightseeing to do within the city, such Kings Swan River which runs along the city and the City Park, Perth Zoo & Botanic Gardens.

Moreover, a main attraction in Perth will be the Rottnest Island. It is what I would otherwise call the “quokka” island. You can do a day trip excursions and is about a 30 minute ferry ride out from Fremantle to Rottnest.

Furthermore, the island is a popular holiday and resort destination. It has large open bays, beaches with nice views of the Pacific Ocean and surfing waves. Also, it is an enclosed sanctuary for quokkas. They are large rodent-like marsupials about the size of a domestic cat, which would otherwise be extinct if it were for natural predators like those found on Perth mainland.

A mix of cultures

Moreover, Perth is one of the many cosmopolitan cities in Australia with a strong Asian community. Hence there is very close assimilation of western and eastern culture here. Given the familiarity of the people here with Chinese communities, you see a close bond between people of different races. Xenophobia here is not as bad as those seen in other major Australian cities, such as Sydney.

Furthermore, the Oriental Chinatown located near the city center offers a large number of open oriental dining options as well as Chinese and Japanese food cuisines.

However, food options start to get quite limited when late. There are a couple of cafes and restaurants which open tad before late, but that is about it. You will have better chances finding traditional late night food establishments such as those offered by Lord of the fired and JSPA Kebabs.

Plenty of good alley way food here, just be sure not to be in too late

A well connected city

In the city centers sits the central trains and bus station which sits square. Public transport is pretty good in Perth. The city is pretty well connected via a network of buses and trains. They are modern and clean.

Moreover, Perth is served by an international airport and is within a 30 to 40 minute car ride into the city center. In addition to taxis, Uber is also available in Perth (and pretty much most of Australia too) so you can get your ride share fix if you still miss them following their exit from Singapore.

In the regional city mass rapid trains
In the regional city mass rapid trains.

All in all, you are good in the City of Perth for about 2 days tops. There isn’t much to actually do here unless you are here for a reason other than tourism, like visiting your friends. Otherwise, Rottnest island a nice place to relax on an island with nice views of the Pacific. But if you are looking to thrills, and more scenic sites to visits, then Perth is not quite the city I would recommend.

Razer Phone 2 first looks and walk through

1

For today, I have a first look at the Razer Phone 2. Razer had always been a brand highly associated with high end gaming accessories, let be mice, keyboard, speakers and most recently hardware devices like laptops. When Razer first announced the Razer phone in November last year, it caught the mobile world by surprise. Never before had a gaming accessory maker gone into entering the phone market with a device of their own.

The phone got generally good positive reviews, but did not quite had the adoption as expected, let be compete in the already crowded smart phone market. This is particular in flagship range in the likes of Apple and Samsung.

Similar looks in a revised body

On first looks you can’t really tell the difference between the original Razer phone and this incoming model. This is unless you out them side by side. The differences are minute, the phone had grown about a fraction of a millimeter on both the width and thickness. It now has a thickness of 8.5mm from last model’s 8mm. It however, retains the same length dimensions. This bump in dimensions could be in place to accommodate the slightly larger screen.

The rear glass face of the phone. It is quite a fingerprint magnet
The rear glass face of the phone. It is quite a fingerprint magnet.

Moreover, the phone still retains it chunky design which feels like a small slab in the hands. The industrial design theme is largely, well, Industrial with a full matte grey aluminum body with a rear glass face. This glass can be quite a fingerprint magnet. It does give the phone a more premium look, but I still prefer the metal back of the first phone.

Left side of the phone with the SIM slot and separate volume buttons

Furthermore, the left side houses the volume up and down buttons, as well as the SIM and storage expansion slot. Also, the right side of phone still retains the integrated fingerprint sensor that also doubles-up as the phone’s power button.

The phone retains it 24-bit/192kHz audio output, but still has no physical headphone jack. A gripe, though Razer gives you Type-C to 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter included in the box.

Bottom of the phone with the lone USB-C charging and multi-purpose port

Keeping to your guns- The fantastic 120hz display

You can see that Razer had stuck to what works in their first phone. Retained in the second generation phone is the fan-favorite and unique selling proposition of the phone- the 120hz IGZO display. This display is the major selling point of the previous device and still shines today.

Razer Phone 2 in the flesh
Razer Phone 2 in the flesh with its fantastic 120hz screen.

Moreover, to match the screen refresh, the Razer Phone 2 features 120Hz touch sampling. It allows for touch input to be captured and synced to the screen. And yes, there is no notch. I can see the true value of this fast refresh rate not just benefiting gaming, but also for productivity use. The lag-free interfaces are a joy to use.

Furthermore, the screen has gotten a slight bump in size 5.72″. It retains a similar resolution of 1440×2560 pixels and sits under a layer Corning Gorilla Glass 5 (from Corning Gorilla Glass 3) with oleophobic coating. Screen brightness been bumped up alot from 380 nits to 580 nits, that is a 35% improvement.

Bottom stereo speaker of the Razer Phone 2
One half of the large bottom stereo speaker of the Phone.

The screen and front stereo speakers (a visually distinguishing feature of the phone) sits slightly repositioned in accommodation of the phone’s IP67 dust/water resistance. With that, you are good being submerged in water for up to 1m for 30 minutes.

Moreover, internal phone storage starts at 64GB courtesy of inbuilt flash. This capacity is thankfully expandable with an microSD card up to 1TB in size.

The phone received a bump in the processor department. It is however, more evolution than revolutionary. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 replaces the out-going Snapdragon 835, it retains the same 8GB amount of RAM and huge 4000mAh Li-Po battery.

Improved camera recording

The true benefit of the new upgraded processor, on top of better benchmarks is the availability to fully ultilise the dual 12MP cameras. A notable difference with the upgraded Snapdragon 845 process is the ability to record videos 1080p up to 120fps and 2160p up to 60fps. That’s an improvement given the previous generation phone could only do 2160p at 30fps.

Moreover, there are not much changes in the camera hardware department, though the dual cameras are now moved to the rear center of the device. Also, the dual tone flash now sits in between the dual lens setup.

The phone still spots the dual 12 MP shooter one with the primary wide lens spotting a f/1.8 aperture with a 1/2.55″ large sensor and the secondary, a 12 MP, f/2.6, 1/3.1″ sensor size, 1.0µm telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. It comes with the usual bells an whistles such as optical image stabilization, dual-LED dual-tone flash, panorama and HDR modes.

Moreover, the phone now spots a really cool RGB 16M colour just what we see in Razer mice and keyboard, as well as competing products like Alienware. The logo now sits behind the phone is now lit. Which is a really cool touch. Also, Android users rejoice, the phone comes with Android 8.1 (Oreo) pre-installed from factory with planned upgrade to Android 9.0 (Pie). Though the internal storage is only 64GB, it is upgradable to 1TB micro SD with a dedicated slot.

Vapor cooling system

The flagship 8 hundred series Snapdragons are notorious as huge heat emitters. Razer’s new vapor cooling system aim to address this with an integrated water-cooling system. We first saw this in Razer’s line of gaming laptops. Essentially uses as much of the phone’s rear flat surface area to radiates as much heat.

In size comparisons to the competition, the Razer does sits in on a slimmer profile than the incumbents iPhone Xs and Google Pixel 3, but is wider than the new Huawei Mate 20.

Size comparison. The iPhone XS, Google Pixel 3, Razer Phone 2 and Huawei Mate 20
Size comparison. The iPhone XS, Google Pixel 3, Razer Phone 2 and Huawei Mate 20.

All in all, the new Razer phone 2 is a pleasant welcome into the flagship range of smartphones. I found it pleasant that Razer kept to what works on the previous model, and improving on features. However, you can argue that most of the features are more an evolutionary step than revolutionary.

But I found the Razer Phone has a class on it’s own when it comes to cool factor, boosted with a fantastic screen to boot. The Razer Phone 2 will be available and launching in Singapore on the 3rd November. With flagship specs come flagship prices too, expect prices to start from at a recommended retail price of $1,249 SGD, and exclusively only available through Singtel.

Coco Curry Ichibanya

0

Coco curry Ichibanya is a quick casual Japanese style dining restaurant in Singapore. The branch I visited is their Plaza Singapura branch. It is essentially a sit down Japanese curry restaurant. Let’s see what’s on with a dine-in.

The store front of Coco Curry Ichibanya
The store front of Coco Curry Ichibanya.

Coco curry menu selections are simple and revolve about permutations of their fired chicken katsu and pork rice. These are served with rice and flooded with generous servings of curry. The restaurant ambience is chill and white, it does give it a clean look. You are seated in one of the many booth-like seating and have tabled service.

The fried cutlet is what you should visit Coco curry for. It is their signature dish

Menu selections

On menu options, the thing to go for here are their chicken, pork and beef offerings. For starters we have their Curry chicken. For chicken offerings, you have 3 choices, namely stewed chicken, chicken cutlet and fired chicken. Dishes range from 10.29 for their stewed chicken curry with rice to their spicy teriyaki fried chicken ($12.04). The spicy teriyaki is a take on their popular Fried chicken curry rice ($11.04). Also recommended is their Chicken cutlet rice ($11.54), a personal favourite of mine. Your dish comes heaped with shredded lettuce by the side and goes great with their sauces.

Furthermore, the same is the case for their porky offerings. In place of Chicken cutlet are pork cutlets ($11.54), as well as pork dumplings rice ($10.04) of their sausages ($10.29). The dish to go for here are their pork cutlet.

Moreover, Coco curry Ichibanya beef selections includes thinly sliced beef, stewed beef offers large chunky cuts of soft chewy beef cubes which is much easier on the throat compared to their fried cutlet. Interestingly there are also beef meatball offerings.

Additionally, you have the choice to add addition condiments such as cheese or upgrade to brown rice from white rice for $1.50 and $1.00 respectively. You also get free flow of green seaweed as well as water when dining in.

Check out the Omu (omelet rice) it is as basic a meal can get here besides their sausage curry rice

Combination selections

Interestingly, if you have a craving for Omu rice, their omelette selections are not too bad too. You can have your eggs paired with a rather hearty combination of chicken cutlet, pork dumplings or vegetable stews, tad bit like a combination meal. Speaking of combination meals, if you fancy a mix of beef with vegetables, chicken or beef or even twice the dose of fried chicken cutlet, Coco have you covered.

Omelette with stewed shredded beef
Omelette with stewed shredded beef.

These larger dishes set you in the range of $12.29 for their base pork sausage and spinach combo dish to their stewed beef and beef cutlet combination for $16.04. I found they are all rather affordably priced under $20 per person.

Stewed beef and beef cutlet combination for $16.04

Notably, I had tried Coco curry on a trip to Japan before. However, it is not like the cushy sit-down setting we see here in Singapore, but rather a counter bar style one where you quickly pop in a meal and out after pre-paying for your meal. Also, you can see your meals prepared behind the counters.

All in all, Coco curry Ichibanya does pretty much what they does best. Building on what makes the establishment such as hit in Japan itself, offering quick no-frills casual dining with a good price to boot.

Mr DIY store Westgate Singapore

3

Mr DIY is a Malaysian hardware and household store. It is a brand largely synonymous across the causeway and is a huge chain known for their large shops retailing very affordable DIY tools and homeware and accessories.

Even in it’s founding country in Malaysia, the establishment has a large presence and a home grown enterprise with over 600 stores throughout APEC. Out of this, over half of them (330 outlets) are situated within all over Malaysia itself. Just this month, the chain had entered the Singapore market with their first store in Jurong East.

Offerings under one roof

Furthermore, the establishment touts over 20,000 products offered in each store. Mr DIY claims supporting this a supply chain providing quality products sourced directly from reputed global manufacturers, with claimed assurance of providing the most reasonable prices for customers. Lets check out it for ourselves, by taking a walk around and check out the Mr DIY store in Westgate Singapore.

The outlet entrance in Westgate Jurong East
The outlet entrance in Westgate Jurong East.

In a nutshell, items on sale range from household items like hardware, gardening & electrical to stationery, sports, car accessories, toys and even jewelry and cosmetics. Things you won’t really expect to find in a hardware store.

One of the central aisles in the store
One of the central aisles in the store.

Upon entering the store, visual confirmation does say yes, this is indeed a hardware store. The store during my visit is lightly packed, with mostly curious on-lookers checking out the new establishment tucked in the upper corners of the mall.

You get most of the hardware items displayed up front. Also, you do have a healthy selection of tools. You get the usual bells and whistles you expect. You can find hammers, lots of hammers in all shapes, sizes and materials. Cutting tools, saws, measuring equipment. Though you will be hard pressed to find more expensive and sophisticated measuring devices such as digital level and laser range finders.

For the casual DIYer, not the pros

I find Mr DIY offerings good for mass-market or people who are light DIYers and starting to enter into the world of Home Improvement or getting their hands dirty. Their offerings are good for like a cheap set of tools to keep around the house for occasional light use.

A part of the hardware section, comprising of measuring and assorted adjustment tool sorted by brand offerings
A part of the hardware section, comprising of measuring and assorted adjustment tool sorted by brand offerings.

Moreover, almost all the items on sale are from an unknown brands with questionable quality. Fancy a COIDO branded handheld vacuum cleaner? Or an INCCO spanner set? You can’t find any from reputable names in the DIY business like Stanley, Leatherman, Craftsman, Facom, Apex, Emerson, Fortive, Bosch or even ITW.

Tool boxes in all sizes and shapes
Tool boxes in all sizes and shapes!

Moreover, I can tell people who really know their hardware and tools won’t actually buy their tools from MR DIY. Also, these people I believe are not part of Mr DIY primary target market. As a person myself who does carpentry and builds my own furniture at home, I find it difficult to see myself investing into the tools I find on sale. They just don’t look lasting or heavy-duty for the taking.

Huge choices of tape for any desired sticky situation
Huge choices of tape for any desired sticky situation.

However, items I might get could include certain light-duty or one-off consumable items, such as paint rollers, tape, measuring tapes or simple bubble levers. But don’t expect adjustment tools like screwdrivers, spanners or drill bits to last with prolonged use.

In the areas where the store does not shine in quality, makes up for quantity. The choices and range of hardware items are very diverse. This rivals even home grown Self-fix and Home-fix DIY stores in Singapore. They can’t compete with Mr DIY in terms of the variety of goods on sale.

More than a hardware store

Furthermore, I found their product offerings are very diverse for a hardware store. Other notable items, includes personal protection equipment (PPE) such as helmets, safety boots and overalls. As well as painting protection gear. You definitely can’t find this is your typical shopping mall DIY shop.

In the lifestyle section, you can find some good bargains, like brandless medium-sized backpacks, pouches and bags going for under $20. They are a good alternative to those offered in your typical traveling Pasir Malam (night market) pop up stores in Singapore.

The car accessories section is probably one of the largest you can find in Singapore, even rivaling the biggest of Daiso stores.

Household section

The household section is one of the larger sections the store. I think is could be one of the more popular sections. It comprises of a mix of electrical appliances, kitchen ware, kitchen, cooking utensils and even footwear (slippers, socks and mats).

Huge selection of plastic bottles

Topping up the household section is a huge selection of plastic bottles, kitchen ware, brooms as well as toys. Yes, toys, the section is actually pretty large. Most of the toys are plasticity looking Chinese brandless toys. They are sold rather cheaply.

Quite a large section of Plastic toys, comprising of cars, imitation Lego and party items

Simply put, for a visiting family, Mr DIY is a store which not only daddy will be happy shopping in there to fill up his new boxset of tools, but for mom to marvel at the kitchen section with new cooking pots and utensil, while the kids play at the toys section. You will be hard pressed to see that you can even do that in an equivalent Home Depot or B&Q outlet.

Footwear section in a hardware shop. This is starting to look pretty Daiso like
Footwear section in a hardware shop. This is starting to look pretty Daiso like.

Also, this product variation strategy is paying off well for Mr DIY. It could be an attempt to diversify their market offerings. Myself having visited a couple of Mr DIY stores in Malaysia. More often, I tend to see myself buying household items other than actual hardware items.

However, I find the initial selection here may have limited applicability to the Singapore market. This initial selection like the large car and toy section may not cater well to Singapore needs and could be tweaked and refined to consumer needs over time.

A place for arts and crafts

Moreover, I was welcomed by the rather comprehensive Arts and crafts section. It is quite a one-stop place not just for tools, but for crafts too. This could add some competition to current stores in the market such as Spotlight or Art Friend.

The arts and crafts section
The arts and crafts section.

The party gifts and packaging section is impressive too. I found their offerings tad a mix of what is offered by Daiso and Japan Home in Singapore.

A Malaysian shopping experience at Singapore prices

The items sold are similar to the offerings in Malaysia in terms of variety, but not much on price. Items sold here are consistently more expensive than equivalent MR DIY offerings in Malaysia. I guess this could be due to higher mall rents and overheads, coupled with the capitalization on the affluence of the target market here in Singapore.

Despite the more expensive pricing than in Malaysia, I found Mr DIY offerings sits nicely between Daiso on quality and mainstream heartland Hardware stores (e.g. Self-fix, etc) in Singapore. This puts Mr DIY nicely in the low-to-mid end hardware market segment here. It does cater well to the masses, where the bulk of the market really is.

Moreover, give and take increase in cost given currency conversions, the prices are however, still lower than most DIY shops in Singapore. Also, despite the number of MR DIY stores in Johor, maybe paying an extra cash premium may be worth the convenience or time-saved by not having to go across the causeway just to save a few dollars. And I think this convenience is what Mr DIY aims to address here.

All in all, I found Mr DIY entry into Singapore a welcome. It is bold move, but I find it difficult to find a unique selling proposition for the store here. This is also considering that Singapore does not have a DIY culture embedded to begin with. Even today, we are more a service-dependent society than doing it ourselves.

That is where I found Mr DIY’s strange but quirky broad range of merchandise (on top of tools) coming into play, which is odd even for a hardware store. You will definitely see me back in-store, though I may find it hard-pressed to purchase something.

Tian Tian hainanese curry rice

0

In my food quests around Singapore, I usually go about exploring food centers not expecting to find anything. At times, some interesting gems appear and me, out of curiosity will try the food. If it is good, I will write about it here. Tian Tian hainanese curry rice is one of this such food outlets in Singapore hawker fare. Lets check it out.

The food store is located inside a coffee shop, in block 116 in a coffee shop called “Food Farm”. It is situated beside the Bukit Merah view hawker center area. The area is well served by buses, with the nearest MRT station being Tiong Bahru about a 10-15 minute walk away. The store sees long queues during peak mealtimes, but they are fast moving.

Moreover, Tian Tian, simply translate to “Everyday come“, probably beckoning you to patronize their store daily. This is not to be confused with Tian Tian chicken rice, another popular food store at Maxwell market. There is another Tian Tian hainanese curry rice franchise, located at Block 35 Telok Blangah Rise with similar offerings.

Sticking to curry rice traditions

Their main selling dish is traditional pork chop with rice. It is a simple and plain dish invented during its time for the low to medium income workers. The dish is often doused with plenty of curry to make up for the lack of taste the dish usually has.

The curry rice with their signature hainanese pork chops
The curry rice with their signature hainanese pork chops.

Furthermore, this dish, despite it’s hainanese name was actually a dish invented in Singapore by the immigrating people from Hainan China. This dish has its roots at the nearby Tiong Bahru market decades ago and now find its way into the Singapore Hawker fare through stores like this. Little has changed from the classic dish. You may remember another similar curry rice store at Redhill I wrote about sometime back, Hong Seng Curry rice, which has similar roots too.

Meal offerings

Tian Tian offers a choice of 6 meal sets to simplify your ordering. My recommendations will be first and most popular “Set 1”. It comprises of Pork Chop with a side serving of Vegetables (white cabbage). It sets you back $3.50. The serving size is small-medium.

Also, it fills you just enough without making you full, yet unfilled. Alternative selections of meats includes Char Siew (roast pork), as well as Curry chicken. Both alternatives to your main meat selection similarly sets you back $3.50 with a vegetable side.

The dish with the choice of Chicken curry as the main meat option

Moreover, if you desire more premium selections, you have option for their Sotong (squid), Assam fish (a Malay sour and spicy fish stew) or Mutton meat selections for a dollar more at $4.50 plate with a vegetable side.

Additional condiments like egg or omelette cost 50 cents a pop. Additional serving of vegetables costs a very affordable 20 cents. Main meat serving of curry chicken, pork chop or prawns will set you back $2.00 on top of your starting meal price, with mutton being the biggest additional item going at $3 extra.

Additional food selections available on the order on top of your regular meal
Additional food selections available on the order on top of your regular meal.

A tasty and mild curry

The curry is creamy, but no overly spicy at all. It is mild and good for people who cannot take spicy food. The rice is tad bit on the wet and soft side. I am fine with that though it can be subjective to tastes, as I know of people who strictly prefer their rice hard and bone-dry. Also, the dish does taste and look alot better in person than the sludgy curry pile on camera.

Additionally, you have the option to have your ingredients served on separate plate instead of everyone on one plate. This is particular useful if you are sharing your meal with multiple people at the same table.

All in all, Tian Tian curry rice is a nice hawker find. It is a nice throw back to independently run hawker stalls in the fast changing commercializing world of food courts. The quality of the food, taste and condiment varieties the store offers does justifies for a recommendation and a revisit.

Testing Home Ethernet points with RJ45/RJ11 Cable Tester

2

To address whether your home Ethernet wall cabling is up to scratch, I produced a tutorial video detailing on how to use an RJ45/RJ11 Cable Tester to do so. With a video, I shall go through how to test and check your Home Ethernet points using this rather inexpensive RJ45/RJ11 Cable Tester.

Network self-diagnostics

The video firstly introduces you to the device. The tester comprise of two parts, a detachable master and remote unit. The unit is powered by a single 9-volt battery in the master unit. You can easily acquire one of these devices to run tests at home yourself. I got it off Ebay from a Shenzhen seller for under $10 SGD. Prices can go as low as $5 each. Also, it is very useful to have when troubleshooting networking issues. The device has the generic model number CPJ20 16T 0318.

Moreover, the tester can be also known in layman terms an ethernet continuity tester. It can check for continuity all data wires of any phone or Ethernet cable. Also, it checks if your connectivity is sound by testing your cables to uncover problematic shorts, open wires, crossing pairs and other wiring mishaps. This includes those wires running behind your home walls.

The network tester cycling through all 8 pins on the RJ45 interface to ensure your behind wall cables and terminal points are all connected.
The network tester cycling through all 8 pins on the RJ45 interface to ensure your behind wall cables and terminal points are all connected.

Running the tests

With a cable between the master and remote unit, it sends a signal through all 8 pins of the RJ45 cable. This tests your cable, patch work or wall plug for any connectivity problems.

Also, as highlighted, the portable handheld unit can test for both RJ11 and RJ45 cables. Moreover, each RJ45 ethernet cables has 8 pins. While RJ11 cables has 6 pins. The procedure as elaborated in the video is similar for all your rooms from your home network junction box, and testing the RJ11 telephone lines.

Additionally, the video runs you through how to setup to test ethernet cables beforehand as an illustration, as well as use those tested cable to check your RJ45 wires behind walls. This is to ensure that your homemade Ethernet patch cables are all OK and are in working order prior to connecting to your devices.

It tests by cycling through sending an electrical signal from the master unit through your cabling to the remote unit. As the remote unit does not have a battery installed. The power which lights up the LEDS on the remote end is an indication of cable/wiring continuity. This is so as the power to come through the cable from the powered master unit.

This is how you can tell that you have the connectivity of a good cable. From here, you are good to go to setup and connect up your networking devices.

Keisuke Ramen Tori King 100am Mall

2

Keisuke is a name in Singapore I find, is known for providing good quality Japanese food through their specialty dine-in restaurants. To date, they have over 10 outlets across Singapore, with each focusing purely on a Japanese food dish, such as Gyoza, Tonkotsu and Tori. Keisuke Ramen Tori King is one such store in the Tanjong Pagar area I am going to check out.

Ramen Tori King is located in the neighborhood with a strong Japanese expat presence on the third floor in the Tanjong Pagar 100am Mall. The mall itself is packed with Japanese themed outlets to cater for this market segment. Notable tenants includes Daiso, Don Don Donki, as well as a huge selection of Japanese Casual dining restaurants.

Inside the rather cramped interior of the restaurant. It does reminds you of the shoebox eateries you can find in Tokyo
Inside the rather cramped interior of the restaurant. It does reminds you of the shoebox eateries you can find in Tokyo.

Furthermore, I am pleased to find that unlike most run-of-mill Japanese dining, which try to cramp as much on their menu, their store at 100am mall specializes only in “Tori” Ramens. This specialization allows Keisuke Ramen Tori King to focus on doing what they do best.

I found the long wait and queues are one of the biggest let downs of the establishment. A typical wait takes about 30 minutes on average. This is due to the rather small seating areas inside the restaurant. However, the tables inside are pretty fast moving. Like typical Japanese efficiency, the staff does a pretty good job in ensuring no downtime between orders. They take your order before entering, serving you quickly and clearing up when you are done for the next table. Commendably efficient indeed.

What’s on the Tori menu?

Keisuke Ramen Tori King offers a rather simple selection on their menu, with about 5-6 different kinds of Ramen. This comprises of 3 main types of Ramen flavors (standard, spicy black/green, clear) on offer with varying richness. You have a choice of soupy or dry Ramen.

“Tori” in Japanese means “chicken’ and what you get is what it says on the tin. All their basic Ramens comes with a soupy Ramen broth stewed from chicken. You get their flavor from chicken bones, chicken feet, Japanese seaweed and an assortment of vegetables. This contraption of ingredients are meticulously boiled for eight hours. This is to extract their individually essential flavors you get in the soups.

Additionally, These specially selected elements come together to create a tantalizing and creamy chicken broth, which is layered and deeply comforting. Their more popular Tori king Ramen has an additional selection of broth richness, ranging from mild, normal to ultra rich.

A good offering for the price

The Tori King Ramen basic Chicken Broth Ramen starts at $11.90. It is their cheapest option available with only the basic and a single piece of pork meat. You are generally fine with a meal under $20, this is well priced compared to other Japanese Ramen establishments in Singapore, where bowls could start from $20.

Moreover, to add to the mix, you have free flow of boiled eggs and bean sprouts, which is a welcome. The broth is tasty and flavorful, but does get overwhelmingly strong and pretty salty when you are finishing the bowl. Hence, I will recommend against going for the Ultra-rich broth. The standard richness is more than adequate without raising your cholesterol by too much.

Tori King's basic Chicken Broth Ramen, $11.90
Tori King’s basic Chicken Broth Ramen, “Tori King Ramen Special”. Starts at $11.90, and $12.90 with seaweed sheet.

If you can’t decide what dish to start with, a good area is their Tori King Ramen Special. Here, you have three different topping levels with the base dish with one slice of pork and a full chicken leg with Japanese Seaweed going at $12.90. Bumping up an additional flavored Egg sets you back an extra dollar, while the full works with all toppings will cost you $15.90.

“Upsizing” your meal with toppings

Also, to suit small and large eaters, the restaurant allows you to vary your servings by “upsize” you meal with additional toppings. The base dish of any variant usually sets you back in the $12 to $13 range. With an intermediary range about $2 more and the range topping option with all the works coming close to $20 a bowl. The choice to upsize vaguely reminds me of the offerings of Hitoyoshi Ramen at Harbourfront center.

Moreover, the black spicy Tori King Ramen variant is based off the standard ramen, but has added black spicy chili paste. This introduced a great of dak spiciness on top of your dish. It starts at $12.90 for the base dish and $16.90 with all the toppings bells and whistles. It is recommended dish only if you had tried the basic offerings and want to try something more adventurous.

The noodles are thick and springy. You have a choice of noodle thickness if need be

Also, if you demand a fusion of bit more local offerings, you can opt for the traditional Tan Tan noodles. They are a Sichuan noodle dish typically served spicy with red chili oil soup for taste. Also, this Tori King Tan Tan Mien starts at $13.90 and goes up to $18.90 with their special with all toppings. The Tori King Ultra-Rich Tan Tan Mien starts at $14.90 to $19.90 with all Toppings.

Additional specialty Ramen options

Moreover, if you wish to try more specialty options, I would recommend the Tori King Green Spicy Ramen Special. It is best eaten with all Toppings. The broth has a green tint hue to it, with some creamy-ness of a milk-based curry added to the broth. It is not overly spicy at all.

Tori King Green Spicy Ramen Special with all Toppings, $17.90

Additionally, if dry Ramens are much to your liking, there are offerings such as the Maze Soba Dry Ramen. It is served with a side bowl of soup and starts at $12.90 a bowl and up to $17.90 with all toppings.

The base Tori King Tsuke Men at $12.90
The base Tori King Tsuke Men at $12.90.

Lastly, if you prefer something more clear and soupy, Tori King Ramen Special with Clear Soup is a good choice. It is not rich and salty as that offered in the Tori broth. It starts at $13.00 to $16.00 with all toppings added.

The dry ramen Tori King Tsuke Men special with all toppings added at $17.90
The dry ramen Tori King Tsuke Men special with all toppings added at $17.90.

Moreover, I found the serving portions of their Ramen is adequate. It is not too little making you feel you had got your money worth. Also, but not too much that it makes you feel miserable at the end of your meal. Having said that, for me, I found the portions could do with a little more. However, given the small menu selection, I found that you can quickly run out of options on what to order on subsequent visits.

All in all, Keisuke Ramen Tori King at 100am Mall is a delightful experience. Despite the long queues, the food quality, free flow of side offered makes it one of the few better Ramen places in Singapore with a good price to boot too. It gets my recommendations.

Since they are located in the open public sectors of the museum, you can simply just walk-in without having to register at the counter (unless you wish to enter the museum permanent galleries).

The World Press Photo Foundation

Similarly, this 2018 Exhibition sees a recollection of breaking news captured by photography. Moreover, this year sees over 160 photos on display by 42 photographers. Additionally, on a little history, the World Press Photo Foundation was founded in 1955 and is based in Amsterdam. It is an independent non-profit organization widely known for holding this annual press photography contest.

Furthermore, the photos were judged by an international panel. This is based on the criteria of composition, impact and relevancy to major events which happened in a particular time frame (2017 in this instance).

Additionally, the displays cover a broad range of photographic news topics such as the Environment, Nature, Daily living (lifestyle news), to Terror attacks (e.g. London car attack, Las Vegas shooting). If you are in-tune with current news, particular those from 2017, you will recognize many of the published photos on display. Areas of Nature includes Environment and covers sustainable topics as well as agriculture.

Moreover, due the violent mature nature of some photos, certain gallery sectors are enclosed with warning signs of the content ahead. However, all sectors are still open for all. Also, you may recognize these photographs similarly licensed for use in many major new agencies through AFP, Reuters or even National Geographic for instance.

Straits Times Photos Exhibition

Greeting you at the start of the photo exhibition is Straits Times (ST) very own local showcase. Notable photos having international acclaim include the Singapore Kim- Trump summit which took place last June.

Moreover, showcased upfront here are the works from our very own local ST photographer Kevin Lim. You can see his shot of the iconic handshake between President Trump and Mr Kim in the courtyard of the Capella Singapore hotel on Sentosa. Also, his photos were published by The Daily Telegraph, The Courier Mail and Time magazine.

Furthermore, additional notable photos include Cadillac one (the beast) as well as the taking off of Airforce one flanked by a background of HDB flats. Covering the sporting front encompasses shots of the recent Sea Games held in Indonesia as well as the Singapore GP formula 1 race just last month, with Lewis Hamilton taking the win. Other interesting displays includes a scene comparison between places in Singapore at different times of the day.

Long term projects

Additionally, on showcase too are several long term photography projects. An example includes one by Carla Kogelman from the Netherlands. It covers the social lives of two girls over a 5 year period.

Adding to the display too are battle of unrest in the middle east, including those captured in in terror-contested areas. Also, there were photos not commonly published of the Las Vegas shooting from the Mandalay Bay Hotel in the US.

Moreover, adding to the photo is one of illegal prostitution industries in Russia, as well as children jockeys in Belgium. I was also awestruck by a fantastic overhead photo by Erik Sampers. It depicts hundreds of runners pounding their feet into the endless dessert the Sahara marathon (known as the Marathon des Sables).

Exhibition take backs

All in all, the photos are impact-full and puts in perspective the reality of the world happenings the past year. You do not really need any narration in the photos. The composed photos enshrined the emotions of the subjects well within the photos. The message delivered through a photo speaking a thousand words of the scene as depicted. It is a side of photo journalism you seldom see in the news.

Catch the World Press Photo Exhibition at National Museum. It is located along Stamford Road near Bras Basah. The exhibition runs for the month of October from 6th to 28th, with the museum open from 10am to 7pm daily. The closest MRT stations Bras Basah and Dolby Gaunt station are within walking distance. Admission is free.

Redhill Market Hong Seng Curry Rice

2

Hong Seng Curry Rice is a hawker store selling really tasty traditional situated in Redhill Lane market. It is located just off Redhill MRT and beside Redhill Close. The curry rice is also known as the Hainanese variant. The dish staple usually contains a bed of steamed white rice.

The dish is usually accompanied by sliced pork chops, chap chye (braised cabbage) and kong bak (braised pork). Curry chicken is sometimes available as an optional meat add-on. After topping up your ingredients, your dish is usually smothered in a mess of curries and braised gravy. This is the favorite part of the entire dish. It looks and taste better in person than on-camera.

A walk down Singapore curry rice history

On some background, despite it’s Hainanese name, the dish actually is a fusion one which originates from Singaporean. It is a distinctive Singapore cuisine only found here. Moreover, some of the most well-known and popular Hainanese curry rice vendors within Singapore started operations in Tiong Bahru Market. This was as early as the 1946s.

This particular curry rice store, Hong Seng, has been around for about 20 years. They previously operated at Kim Tian near Tiong Bahru. Market before moving to their current location at Redhill food and market center at stall unit number #74. The stall front is distinguishable by a yellow background sign Board. From what I know they operate pretty much like a franchise now. There are only two of such competing curry rice stores in the Redhill Market.

Like your typical Singaporean “Caifun” (vegetable rice) fan fare, you start off with a plate of rice where you pipe up on your Ingredient choices. These can range from meat or vegetables items, each with their own pricing.

Pork Chops and Char Siew are must-try

As previously introduced, their staple item to go for is their fried pork chop and Char Siew. They are thinly sliced and are synonymous with the “scissor cut” rice. A recommendation is to have your pork chops with servings of white cabbage, fried egg and generously sprinkled with heaps of their trademark curry sauce. If you are out of ideas, their Curry chicken is a delight too.

This sauce is what I would like to call literally their “secret sauce” which is a favorite and is rather addictive. Moreover, this food combination as the hawker legends foretell is the meal selection which the store had been serving for decades since they went in business.

The char siew is really juicy

A curry to suit all tastes

Also, their curry remind me much of Japanese curry. It has an orange-reddish hue which is pretty creamy, but not overly thick like Rendang curry. Moreover, the curry is surprisingly not spicy at all. You can of course make your dish more spicy by pairing it with few additional heaps of Sambal condiments at the store front if you see fit.

In addition, today the choices of ingredients spread has increased. You have additional selections such as fried fish, cuttlefish, prawn fritters and more vegetable choices such as long beans and bean curd cakes. You however, won’t go wrong with my recommended pork chop, cabbage and egg combination. At $3.50, it does prove to be a rather hearty meal indeed. Though questionably healthy.

However, when you start to pile up on your ingredients beyond 3 items, you can start to see your dish go upwards of $4 to $5 a plate. This is especially if you choose fish items. Henceforth, dish is not exactly what you would call “hawker affordable“. Stick to the Pork Chop, Char Siew and cabbage and you won’t go wrong.

Open all day, but mind the queue

Furthermore, the store-turned franchise still attracts a long sizable queue each time they open for business. Queues are at their longest during dinner time from 6 to 7pm, especially on work days. Here, patrons are often seen packing their curry-loaded meals back home. However, thankfully, the queues are very fast moving. You will be served in under 5 minutes tops regardless of the queue length.

The only worry though is the lack of food choices, especially if you arrive around 8 or 9pm. your choices favorites such as chicken meat will usually run out pretty quickly. Fried food items will tend to be soft squishy and cold as they had been already fried for sometime.

Will I recommend Hong Seng Curry Rice? Of course, it offers a good mix of affordably and good taste to boot. It is a gem of a find in the Singapore Hawker scene.

Verdict:

DJI Spark Drone unboxing first impressions

0

The DJI Spark is a niffy little compact travel drone I simply adore. It allows you to explore and capture more of your trips than what you can do with a hand-held camera. Moreover, despite it being out for over half a year, it is still one of the best semi-professional and most feature packed small drone in it’s class money can buy today. Lets check out the DJI Spark Drone unboxing first impressions.

The unboxing video takes alook at what is inside the box. With an intro and my first impressions of the Drone and accessories as I run through of the DJI Spark controller combo package.

Recommended additional accessories

Out of the box, the standard DJI Spark package includes very limited accessorizes. The base package is pretty lean. The Mini Drone can be controlled by Android phone, iPad, iPhone. But to fully maximise it’s potential and range, in addition to the standard Spark package, I recommend the following essential items, a dedicated remote, at least 1 spare battery, battery charger, remote, microSD card and an additional USB cable to connect remote to phone/tablet.

The DJI Spark with the additional dedicated remote controller for better control and extended range
The DJI Spark with the additional dedicated remote controller for better control and extended range.

A dedicated remote is essential as it effectively doubles your flying range from about 500m on phone to beyond 1,000m. Moreover, these can be purchased with the additional “Fly more package“. In my case, I got my controller and a spare battery separately. It costs about $600 SGD in total which that didn’t cost and arm and a leg.

The similar package of course cost considerably more in physical stores. In comparison, the cheapest Spark fly more combo I can find here in Singapore from drone merchants and Lazada costs from $730 – $800 onwards. The Spark itself costs about $599 on DJI’s official site, excluding an additional $185.00 more for the remote.

Still, even with theses additions, the DJI Spark presents a very cost effective hobby drone for those who do not wish to commit into spending over a thousand dollars into the hobby.

I found the manuals are not very useful, you get a stack of 6 books which does not provide any much useful information. Though the hand gesture leaflet is pretty handy.

A tiny but powerful package

The Spark is a very simple drone to start flying, it is both fun and easy to fly. The controls are identical to what you get on DJI range of more premium Mavic range of drones. Compared to the DJI Phantom 4, it is alot less cumbersome process to get it up and flying. All you need is to turn on your controllers, get a good firm GPS signal (green lights) ensure your compass is calibrated at your location and you are off.

Specifications-wise, unlike it’s larger 4k-enabled DJI Mavic cousins, the Spark only records video at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080) at 30 frames per second. It is more than adequate for my needs, especially for web publishing. It offers the best quality to file-size ratio. Still Image Resolution sits at 3968 x 2976.

The DJI Tello may be the smallest “Proper drone” but it does not fair well in terms of range and video quality (Sub-HD). That is where the spark comes to fill the gap. Is more than enough if you are looking to publish for web and viewing on High definition TVs.

Perfect for travel

Moreover, at 250 grams, you can easily go backpacking without being bogged down by too much weight. Also, it falls into the “toy drone” category of most countries. Hence, you need not have to register to fly it overseas. With it’s weight, you can’t really feel the weight of the drone on your back even after transversing long distances.

Also, the drones attracts little to no attention when flying in public places. It looks essentially just a toy drone. Unlike other larger and more professional looking drones where people’s demeanor usually changes when they see it.

The Magic of USB charging

The drone has a removable rechargeable 1480 mAh lithium polymer battery. It gives the Spark a flight time of up to 16 min, though I am getting about 11-12 minutes of flight time on average. Consumption increases when you hover.

Battery recharge time takes about an hour from flat. Thing I really adore is USB charging, where I can charge my drone after a flight outdoors without a wall plug. For instance, I can film shots at a nature trail and continue trekking for my next flight while my drone charges from a powerbank right in my backpack. Also, this reduces the need to carry multiple spare batteries.

All in all, even with about half a year in on the market, the DJI spark remains one of the best super compact drones out there which is not a toy. Say hello to my new toy in my tools of content creation. Do expect more drone footage on the site to come!
