The store is tucked in the quiet neighhourhood in Bukit Merah View. Within, the ambience of Bukit Merah View Hawker Centre is bustling and lively, with people from all walks of life coming together to enjoy good food. Also, the place has a small community feel to it, typical of older hawker centers built in the 80s. It’s is tad a melting pot to soak up the local culture and try out different cuisines.

A classic Lor mee at $3.00

71 Lormee is known for their signature and only dish- Lor mee. If you’re not familiar with lormee, it’s a dish that consists of yellow noodles, gravy, vegetables. There are several versions of the dish, with some with various toppings like prawns, squid, and chicken. The gravy is made from a secret blend of spices and ingredients, which gives the dish its unique flavor. Also, the Hokkien-style noodle dish features thick noodles served in a rich, thick, starchy flavorful broth made from a blend of spices, garlic, and vinegar.

Interestingly, the store is called 71 Lormee Bukit Merah View due to the unit number of the store. It is not a coincidence. Also, the store specialises and serve only one dish- Lor mee. Also, the store is nothing fanciful but rather the ordinary, not that is it a bad thing. The stall is currently run by a husband-and-wife team who are passionate about maintaining the quality of their food. They use only the freshest ingredients and cook everything from scratch daily.

Furthermore, prices of the dish starts from a very affordable $3.00. $3 bowl of noodles is quite unheard of in Singapore today. Ordering at 71 Lormee is a breeze and your dish typically is ready under 5 minutes. In addition, do note the lor mee store is primarily a breakfast place and has limited opening hours. It is open only from 6am to 1pm, so do come early during your lunch time.

Generous condiments for the price

Moreover, your dish is topped with slices of pork belly, braised egg and crispy fried fish. They are slices of Ngoh Hiong, fish cakes and fried bean curd skin (tou kee) too. Also, there could be more thinly sliced Lor Bak meat slices, though I found the pairing nice with th generously garnished topping of fired crispy flour bits.

Also, you can order your dish with a choice of noodles. I found your lormee is best paired in thick flat yellow noodles or with yellow noodles mixed with bee hoon. Either way, their noodles are thick and blends well with the gravy flavor, with a generous serving of toppings that will leave you feeling satisfied. They are great pairings with the crispy fried crackers, and sliced braised lean meat.

Moreover, your entire dish in impregnated in mildly thick, but still flavourful gravy which coats the ingredients. It is traditional lor mee, appealing to those looking to indulge in the occasional lor mee but also looking to control their salt intake. It is tad a perfect comfort food that will warm you up on a cold day. Also your dish is served with generous servings of minced garlic and parsley, it does brighten up your dish.

Additionally, I found for the $3 portions, there is adequate serving of pork belly, fish cake and fried ngoh hiang. Though if you are hungry, I would recommend upsizing to at least a $4 dish.

All in all, if you’re looking for a classic hawker center experience in Singapore, 71 Lormee at Bukit Merah View is definitely worth a visit. The stall’s selling price point to cater to budget patrons, friendly owners, and excellent food quality make it a must-try for breakfast and lunchtime foodies.

Verdict:

Must Go! | Actually pretty Good | Worth Trying | Shortlist Optionally | Should Avoid
