With branches all over Singapore, they cater to locals and expats seeking genuine Mexican flavors. Today, we’re dining at their New Bahru branch.
History and Growth of Huevos Mexican
Huevos opened with the goal of bringing authentic Mexican flavors here to Singapore, with diners here increasingly interested in diverse international cuisines. The restaurant serves as a bridge between Mexican and Singaporean cultures, allowing Singaporeans to experience traditional Mexican cooking.
Furthermore, the name “Huevos,” meaning “eggs” in Spanish. It tads symbolizes an essential ingredient in Mexican cuisine, used in everything from breakfast dishes to complex meals. Huevos Mexican played a significant role in introducing authentic Mexican food to a wider audience. Their menu highlights simple, staple favorites that celebrate Mexican cuisine.
What’s on the Menu
The menu at Huevos Mexican features a range of traditional Mexican dishes. A popular choice is the tacos, a must-try as a Mexican staple, or for anyone new to the cuisine. Tacos come in sets of two or three, with options including cauliflower, fish, pork, lamb, or beef, priced between $15 and $24 for more premium tiger prawns fillings.
Also, the pork is marinated in a blend of spices and slow-cooked on a vertical spit, creating tender, flavorful meat served in fresh tortillas. The tacos are simple yet rich in taste, proving that a well-executed dish doesn’t need to be complex.
A tale of two burrito types
Moreover, recommended dishes include burritos ($13), available as a wrap or bowl ($15), with choices like chicken, pork, or mushroom. These are filling meals that pair well with shared dishes. Burritos are dense and packed, ensuring a satisfying meal despite their size.
Also, having burritos in bowl form is a nod to Huevos in its Asian environment, where the otherwise densely packed Mexican favourite is served on a more familiar wrap. These burrito bowls are also great for sharing in a group.
Also, I found the burritos in its traditional wrap though not as densely packed as I expected. They are lightly toasted and packed full with meat and rice as staple with sides of guacamole all neatly packed into the wrap.
You can consume the wraps in-hand or on a plate with utensils. The cheese quesadilla is a standout dish which resembles micro pizzas with really stretchy mozzarella cheese. It is a light, but very satisfying dish to share.
For a familiar option, try the Chicken Quesadillas ($16). They are also available with pork ($16) or beef ($18), and you can add extra cheese for $3 extra. These grilled tortillas filled with melted cheese and seasoned chicken are comforting and flavorful. The generous portion makes it ideal for sharing or enjoying as a light main course.
Great Platters for Sharing
The Loaded Nachos bowl ($20) is perfect for sharing. It features crispy fried tortilla chips topped with cheese, chipotle chicken, al pastor pork, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, and frijoles. Pickled jalapenos and tangy chipotle aioli add a final touch. The nachos are delightful crispy and generously packed with staples such as guacamole and sides of salsa as favorites.
Moreover, Huevos prides itself on fresh salsas and dips made daily. The guacamole you find as a staple in most of your dishes are fresh, made with a mix of ripe avocados, lime juice, cilantro, and onions. It is tad a standout choice and pairs well with the number of dishes served. They are served with crispy tortilla chips, the freshness of the ingredients is evident, making it a great starter or side.
One notable aspect of Huevos Mexican is its dedication to authenticity. Many spices and ingredients are imported directly from Mexico to maintain traditional recipes. Similar to Nando’s, Huevos offers a self-serve sauce counter with a variety of authentic Mexican hot sauces to enhance your meal.
Ambiance and Experience
Huevos’ popularity is evident, with branches like this one and the one on North Bridge Road often having queues. The ambiance is warm and vibrant. The seating includes a mix of indoor and outdoor areas, with a semi-air-conditioned, open-air concept inside.
Moreover, the interior features walls adorned with Mexican wrestling scenes, a beloved pastime in Mexico. The decor blends rustic and modern elements, reflecting Mexican heritage while appealing to a contemporary crowd. Traditional Mexican artwork further enhances the lively atmosphere.
Drinks and Service
Huevos also offers a range of Mexican beverages. Horchata ($7), a cinnamon rice milk drink, and Agua Fresca ($6), a refreshing watermelon and mint drink, and tad pairs well with the food. Also, these drinks provide a nice contrast to the bold flavors of the dishes.
Additionally, the service at Huevos is attentive, with friendly staff who know the menu well and are happy to offer recommendations. Notably, the restaurant can get busy during peak hours, so reservations are advised. Huevos suggests a maximum dining time of 90mins per visit, though your stay should not exceed an hour as food gets served pretty quickly.
Lastly, despite the crowds, the ambiance remains lively without being too noisy, making it suitable for casual meals and small gatherings.
Conclusion
All in all, Huevos River Valley is a solid choice for those seeking authentic Mexican food in in central Singapore.
