Master Chippy is a local coffee shop fish and chips store located at Toa Payoh North. The establishment specialises in a selection of affordable premium Fish and Chips with a choice of fish and sides. Let’s dine in and see what’s on offer.
Notably, Master Chippy is tucked in a quiet Toa Payoh neighbourhood. The store sits in the void deck of a quiet HDB estate located not too far off from Toh Payoh central. It sits across the SPH news publishing house. Interestingly, there are go-SG electric car charging points situated right in front of the store
Also, the dining area is airy, with the store exterior decked with yellow livery with a dedicated seating area taking up half of the coffee shop’s exterior seating. Self-help condiments are available but he ordering counter.
Fishes of the trade
With Fish and Chips being the speciality dish on offer here, their menu offers 6 different types of fish, ranging from affordable dory, and premium salmon, haddock or Sea bass. All their fish fillets are fried in a thinly coated batter, which gives it a compact light fried fillet. Dish prices ranges from $11 to $15 per plate with the option to top up and additional fillet with additional cost.
Moreover, Master Chippy’s Red Tilapia dish ($10.80) is one such offering. The fish fillers are light with a thin batter. The fish is soft on the inside yet rather crunchy on the outer. The fillet within is also well cooked.
In addition, their Atlantic Halibut fillet ($13.80) is quite a mixed bunch. The fillet interior has tad a fishy taste, possibly due to the marinating process, but was still much bearable.
Also, their North Atlantic Haddock fillet ($14.80) is a very light offering. With smaller than expected fish fillet size for its sub $15 asking price, which I found was quite a let-down. Still, the fish interior is chewy and coupled with a light thin batter.
Dory fish, the best value dish
Interestingly, the Dory fillet ($7.80) was an impressive underdog. For the cheapest dish, you get the largest portions. The fish fillet is creamy within. Additionally, you have a choice of a 12 varieties of sides. Of these, 4 are available to choose for your mains without an additional charge. This includes mashed potatoes, onion rings, French fries, coleslaw. I would recommend the last 2 sides for the most authentic British fish and chips offerings.
Moreover, your dish is topped with a small side of crispy batter crumbs. This could be something you would enjoy as a crunchy side or detest as fried leftovers. Still it could be “batch dependent” and is an interesting inclusion.
Non fishy selections
Furthermore, notably, the outlet does sell other western grill choices such as grilled chicken, lamb chops, NZ Ribeye steaks, and 2 selections of burgers, though I reckon this is not what you would visit Master Chippy for. Additionally, their fried platter is great for a group appetizer, it’s essentially a like seafood in a basket platter with servings of mini fish bites, onion rings, fries and chicken popcorn.
Also, on a quiet weekday evening, your dish is cooked in order and takes about 10-15mins to be ready. Digital cashless payment options including Visa pay wave credit card are accepted too. Your meal is served on disposable cardboard plates which does a good job in holding your otherwise oil-battered fried meal.
Though some would say that $15 for a western main is somewhat pricey in the realm of coffee shop style eateries. I would say Master Chippy offerings still are quite good value for the offerings, you can easily get your fish and chips fix here for under $11.
Also, food portions are adequate, though I think they could be larger all in all. Though Master Chippy fish and chip fillet sizes are nowhere to humongous portions we seen at Smiths fish and chips at Bukit Timah. Still Smith’s offerings would set you back at least $10 more per plate of fish and chips, tad bit of an “expat tax” in a rather more affluent neighbourhood too. This does bring about Master Chippy value proposition.
All in all, Master Chippy Fish and Chips is a welcome in bringing affordable premium Fish and chips to the heartland.
